According to the US Census, there are 40.6 million Americans living in poverty, of those, 11.9 million are children.I moved to New Mexico in 2013, from California, and upon a visit to Bakersfield, CA a few years later, I noticed the homeless population increased from mostly men, to women and children. I asked someone how this happened, you know, women and children on the streets begging for help??Many families lost their houses during the economic meltdown. It has taken years to evict people out of houses in which they were not able to economically maintain. Imagine, the most powerful Nation in the world as the US claims to be, economically and militarily, yet this Country cannot afford to keep people in housing, this Nation cannot afford to provide suitable and affordable healthcare to the needy, this country cannot afford to feed the ones that need it the most, nor can this Country help children continue their education.SNAP is a needed commodity. There are those that do not know the certification requirements and the re-certification requirements to qualify for these benefits. It is a very thorough process to meet the eligibility requirements. It is not a benefit that is given to just anybody.For some it is a very humble experience to go through this process. For some it is highly humiliating, especially when the person goes to use it at the store, and people snub them.Who are we to judge their circumstances? As you can see, there are over 40 million Americans that actually qualify for it just based on income, and of those over 11 million are children. I say keep this benefit alive and help the ones that need it the most.
