PDF Editor FAQ

How can a parent know if they can be successful homeschooling their children?

I don’t think you can know, some students do well with it, others just think they don’t have to work.Talk to parents who have done it and find out the good and cons.I used to do hundreds of homeschool evaluations. Many students weren’t doing any work, I told the parents at the evaluation that I could not pass them on, people got really mad, but I had to sign off that they had done the work, and they hadn’t. So be careful what you chose.

Is it legal to homeschool your children without any kind of degree, if so do you agree with that policy?

It is legal, and yes, I agree. The rules on homeschooling vary state to state- some are more strict than others. I do not agree with the extremely relaxed laws on homeschooling that requires no accountability to the government- children can go without an education that way.I was homeschooled, and so was my husband. We both have Bachelors degrees and my husband is halfway through his Masters. Our mothers had no degree but we had accountability in the form of a homeschool evaluator who came each semester to make sure we were on track. She would look at the lesson plans and made sure things were being followed properly. My mom worked as hard as any teacher I’ve ever seen. She made sure we had the best curriculum, socialization through locals co-ops and made sure we went to museums and on field trips. As a young girl I was reading at a college level.Homeschooling is a great option for some people and while there are a few who slip through the cracks, generally homeschooling is done by parents who are passionate about teaching their children and it often results in a good education.

As a teacher, who was the most remarkable child you came across?

After retiring, I decided to do homeschool evaluations. I am responsible for looking over the portfolio of children’s work done at home over the course of the year. I have two students I evaluated who really stick out in my mind. One is an 8th grader this year, who is a fabulous artist. Some of her art rivals art I have seen for sale in juried shows. The other has a bent for science. He is a 12th grader this year, but when he was in 9th grade, he and a partner, with the help of a retired biology teacher, discovered a gene in mosquitos which is resistant to the West Nile virus. This has been passed on to researchers. Who knows what the future will bring for each of these remarkable children.
