PDF Editor FAQ

Pro-life people who became pro-choice, what changed your mind?

I grew up not ever thinking about this issue. Women had the right to abort and it was just that. So while I was not “pro-life” per say, I was neither a real “pro-choice.” I did not questioned it or thought anything of it. That is until I was in a relationship and was considering becoming sexually active with my partner, and the issue could very well affect me.I had to ask myself what my beliefs were, and every belief must be substantiated by reasons.I asked myself what is the definition of right and wrong?Wrong is the causation of unjust harm on another being. Wrong is also the option that yields the most harm on society. Harm is not restricted to physical pain but also the implications on the infringements of rights and freedoms have on society and the quality of life its people. Is the unborn a human being? Its genetic materials are, but is that sufficient? Tumors are also made up of human genetic materials but they are not human beings. Tumors are also made up of living cells, and so are sperm and ovum. What does it mean to be alive for a human? What does it mean to be a human life? Well, brain dead humans, while their bodies are alive, they are themselves not alive. Life has much to do with our mind, our sentience, our ability to think and react to the world around us. That is what distinguishes human life from other forms of life. We know that zygotes do not have the ability to be sentient, they don’t have brains to begin with. The ability to be sentient is something that occurs somewhere during the pregnancy. Is capacity for life the determining factor? Well each ovum and sperm has the capacity for life, but we do not treat them as lives. Therefore, how can we justify treating zygotes any differently?I came to the conclusion that I did not believe that human life began at conception, human life had to begin later in the human development process. The unborn becomes a human life when the brain of the unborn is sufficiently developed for sentience. The unborn is unable to experience harm before then, and thus no harm is done when one disposes of it much like no harm is done when one throws their tampon in the trash or wash their sperm down the drain. It is not a homicide because it is not a human life. However, not everyone share those views because they put different weights on different reasoning. Fair. The way I weigh different reasoning is not superior to anyone else. Therefore, it should not be the basis of my beliefs.Does it matter whether the unborn is a human life?Do fetus have the right to life? Well, only persons have human rights and only born human lives are persons. However, even though legally the unborn are not persons, the definition of a person is a man made concept and it could be changed to include the unborn. So, yes, the unborn could have the right to life.Since the life of the unborn depends another person’s body, we must ask ourselves. Do persons have the right to the body of other persons? NO. The answer to this question is crystal clear, no person has the right to the body of another. No one has the right to another person’s blood, organs, body parts, etc. Even if that other person is dead, no has the right to their body. Even when one’s life depends upon it, no one has the right to the body of another. Even when one’s life was put in jeopardy because of a person, that person still has exclusive rights over their own bodies. Only those whose rights are affected have a say on their own bodies. Therefore, it does not matter whether the unborn is a person, it does not have the right to the body of another. Even if the unborn had the right to life, its right to life does not give the unborn the right to the body of another. But, then there is the argument that the pregnant person consented to have its body used by the unborn when it consented to having sex. Therefore, the unborn did acquire the right to the body of another through consent. That made sense. Until this line of argumentation raised some issues.(1) It only applies to those who consented to sex. Victims of rape and those who do not have the ability to consent to sex (minors and mentally disabled) have not consented for the unborn to use their bodies. They should thus have the right to choose to terminate the pregnancy.(2) The consent is not ongoing. In every other scenario where a person gives another person consent to use their body, the consent must be ongoing. Lack thereof leads to a violation of the bodily rights of the person whose body is used. If a person consents to having sex, they have the right to withdraw consent during the act. A person cannot continue to have sex with someone after they’ve withdrawn consent, that is rape. A person can withdraw consent on medical procedures. If a person decides to give two bags of blood, the nurse cannot continue to take a person’s blood if they choose to stop after one bag or in the middle of collecting the second. What justifies denying people their bodily right to withdraw consent when it comes to pregnancy? I personally have failed to come up with a justification.I do believe it is important for consent to be ongoing when it comes to one’s bodily right. Pregnancy undeniably causes great harm to the pregnant individual so the harm must be justified, otherwise it is wrong. Consent is a justification. However, denying people their right to withdraw consent over their bodily rights is harmful to society and people’s quality of life. It is therefore wrong to force people to stay pregnant when they wish to terminate the pregnancy. So at this point, I was pretty convinced that I was pro-choice. But, I was not done in my quest. Let’s say there was a justification to deny a person to withdraw consent over their bodily rights when it comes to pregnancy, or let’s say there were faults in my judgement and I had failed to consider a few things. Okay, I’ll bite. What good banning abortion does?Statistics show that banning abortions do not reduce abortions. They just make abortions unsafe. It doesn’t save any babies, all it does is create more harm. It leads to more deaths. Is that a desirable outcome for society? No, of course it is not. Legalizing abortions saves lives. That’s the reality of it.Pregnancy can be lethal. In ectopic pregnancies, both unborn and pregnant person has zero chance of survival. If we do not abort the unborn, we will have two deaths on our plate. If we abort the unborn, the pregnant person will survive. Banning that person to have an abortion would be wrong. Legalizing abortion saves lives. It’s for all these reasons that I am pretty convinced that being pro-life is plainly wrong. Opposing a person’s right to choose is wrong. It causes unjust harm to people. Its implications on the infringements of rights and freedoms are harmful to society and the quality of life its people.

I am being billed for an ER visit that I did not consent to. What legal action can I take?

It depends on the details, of course* (see bottom of answer for why you may not have been allowed to put the details into the question).Normally, you could have simply refused treatment, unless there were special circumstances. If you truly think you were wronged into accepting treatment that you didn’t want and didn’t need, talk to the hospital’s patient advocate, and then if still not satisfied, see a lawyer. But first, if you truly “did not consent” to treatment, why did they not honor your wishes? Do any of the below situations apply to you? Were you unconscious? In that case, you can’t refuse treatment, the hospital has “implied consent,” they have to treat you, and you have to pay (or your parents, insurance provider, or Medicare, or Medicaid, or Workmen’s Comp has to pay). Were your wounds so severe that the hospital would think you were literally out of your mind for refusing treatment? In this case, the hospital might decide you were not mentally capable of making your own decision, so then they might have forced you to accept treatment for your own safety (much like admitting someone to a mental hospital if they were in danger of committing suicide). After all, hospitals don’t want someone dropping dead on their way home from the hospital right after refusing treatment, partly because then the person’s family might sue them for wrongful death. Also, if your injury or illness was life-threatening, why are you complaining? Were you taken to the hospital by police while under arrest? If you’re under arrest, you’re in police custody, and you have no choice but to accept treatment. If you tried to refuse treatment, you could be charged with additional crimes, especially if you tried to refuse treatment by running out of the hospital (escaping from police custody). Were you taken to the hospital by police (or at the urging of police) while not under arrest, e.g. as a result of a car accident? In that case, you should have been able to simply refuse treatment, either by the ambulance or by the ER. It’s very common for car accident victims to refuse an ambulance, and the police will simply note it on the accident record. In fact, every accident I’ve seen where police show up, even where there is no injury, they always ask if you need medical attention or an ambulance, and when you say no, police always note that in the report. (No, I’m not a cop, but my car has been rear-ended numerous times because I live in New Jersey, home of the nation’s worst drivers, so I’ve often needed a police accident report in order to make an insurance claim). If you were too scared of the police to refuse treatment, but you were not under arrest at the time, talk to a lawyer. Maybe you thought you’d be arrested if you didn’t consent to medical treatment, but as long a you were mentally competent, you should have been able to refuse treatment. Call a lawyer if you think the police (or anyone else) coerced you into treatment that you didn’t want and/or didn’t need! Were you a minor, under age 18? In that case, AFAIK, you can’t refuse treatment, especially if your parents, teachers, or other adults in charge at the time you were injured tell the hospital to treat you. Did your parents then refuse to pay the bill and stick the bill on you? Or are you an orphan or emancipated minor? If you were a minor at the time, maybe someone else was responsible for paying the bill, so talk to the hospital’s patient advocate and then ask a lawyer. Are you unable to pay because you can’t afford treatment? The hospital still has to treat you, even if you’re broke or homeless. If you can’t afford to pay, ask the hospital’s patient advocate for help in understanding the billing options. There may be charity care that you may be eligible for.Are you an undocumented alien? Again, the hospital still has to treat you, and if you can’t afford to pay, ask the hospital’s patient advocate for help in understanding the billing options, This can be a complicated situation, so you may want to talk to a lawyer specializing in immigration law, rather than medical law.Are the ER fees outrageously high? Welcome to America. In other words, join the club, as we all think medical bills are too high! Again, if you can’t afford to pay, ask the hospital’s patient advocate for help in understanding the billing options. They might agree to lower your bill.Do you think the ER gave you unnecessary treatment to defraud you or your insurance company? For example, did they give you chest X-rays when you came in with just a foot injury and no other medical problems? Talk to their patient advocate and/or talk to a lawyer if you suspect medical fraud! But first, ask the hospital to explain why they did the treatment. For example, if you go in with a foot injury, and then they find dangerous heart problems or breathing problems, they can and should treat you for both. My mom went into the hospital for lung problems, and then her bloodwork showed other problems (including life-threatening low sodium levels), so they treated her for both, as they should have, because doctors have to treat all the underlying illnesses in order for a patient to get better, not just the one symptom that caused them to seek medical help.*It depends on the details, of course, but unfortunately, Quora does not allow details in questions! Quora forces the OP to add them in comments instead.Whenever I’ve tried adding details to my own questions, Quora kept rejecting the questions until I removed all the details, even though the details were necessary for understanding the question! It’s the biggest shortcoming of Quora, as it makes the people asking questions look like fools (I’m speaking of myself, not the OP) because we have to remove all details that would have shown that we’re not a fool and we’re not asking a foolish question. For example, I’ve had questions rejected when I had put at the end of the question something like, “I’ve already done enough research to reject the obvious answers X, Y, and Z, which do not apply to my situation because A, B, and C.” Then after being forced to remove those details from my question, most of the answers I got were in the form of, “Why didn’t you do enough research to try the obvious solutions X, Y, and Z?” (And then in the comments, I have to add the explanation which I’d been forced to remove from the question, “I’ve already done enough research to reject the obvious answers X, Y, and Z, which do not apply to my situation because A, B, and C.” )
