Many project managers have been used to “cookbook” project management processes where you follow a well-defined, step-by-step process for managing projects and you may even use fill-in-the-blanks document templates. That methodology just doesn’t work very well any more in an uncertain environment that requires a much more flexible and adaptive approach. It takes much more skill and training to do that kind of approach. In my book, I describe it as the difference between a “cook” and a “chef”:“In the past, some project managers may have acted as “cooks” – they know how to prepare a limited number of recipes (methodologies) and sometimes do it “by the book”. In the future, being a good “cook” may not be good enough and more project managers may need to become “chefs” – they need to know how to prepare a much broader range of dishes and go beyond preparing standard recipes by the book to create highly customized and innovative “recipes” tailored to fit a particular business and project environment. The agile movement forces project managers to consider a much broader range of “recipes” and “ingredients” to “cook” with and require a much more customized and tailored approach.”

I'm assuming you want to know how to order more complicated drinks in the way that a Starbucks barista would.Firstly, and this is very important: if there’s a line up, know what you want to order before you get to the counter.Obviously speaking clearly and respectfully to the barista serving you goes a long way as well.As for ‘calling’ drink modifiers, do what the baristas do and follow the back of the cup. It's ordered the way it is for a purpose, and it's much easier to write complex modifiers if you give them sequentially.This is a standard cup. Note the order of the boxes going down the cup.First, specify whether or not the drink is iced. If it's hot, you don't have to say anything. Next, the number of shots.Now, specify the size.I f you know the nomenclature, great, if not, extra small-small-medium-large is fine. The reason the size is called after the shots is to prevent confusion between number of shots and number of syrup pumps, if applicable. Either way is fine.Now, move down the cup calling modifiers in order. When I worked for Starbucks, I could remember hundreds of drinks back if they were told to me in the standard order, but could hardly remember more than one if it was given to me jumbled.
