How long have you played guitar?
I started playing the guitar when I was 14 (1966) as a freshman in High School. My first guitar was a $5.00 Guitar my father bought me in Nuevo Laredo when we were living in Laredo, Texas. I took about 6 weeks of lessons and, like all teenagers, I thought I was better than my instructor . (I really wasn’t). I wanted to accompany my singing for the sings I liked (at that time it was sings by The Kingston Trio). There were very few guitar books out there, but my mother had some music books for piano with guitar chords; and that’s how I learned more chords. I always practiced changing between chords I was learning. Barr chords were easy, because my guitar was a nylon string guitar. We had a reel to reel tape recorder and a tape with tons of their songs that my father loved. I would listen to a song over and over, figuring out the chords. The one thing my first instructor did for me was teach me the basic “cowboy chords” and I would match a few of the notes in the songs to the strings in the guitar, then figure what chord fit. on my own, I developed a “boom chuck” style of playing, where I played a bass note with my thumb and strummed with my other fingers. Then, after two years of playing, I heard my first Bob Dylan song and a friend who knew finger picking taught me how to play “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright” and I was off to the races. Then, I heard Simon and Garfunkel and wore our records figuring out their songs…i really had not played for anyone except for my family until my father retired from the USAF in 1969 and we moved to our first permanent home. I was playing in the back yard when the neighbor’s kid leaned over the fence the week before our Senior year of H.S. He said they were having a bonfire ad would I like to play there. I did, and I had my first date!I took a year of Classical guitar and my guitar playing improved 1000%.i played in Coffee Houses and Restaurants in College then, went into the USAF for 20 years. I played every where I went, but although I learned some new songs, I really didn’t get any better. When I retired from the USAF, went to Grad School and found an Open Mic and met a guy who became my mentor. At the time, each time I learned a song, it was like starting from scratch. Listening to the song, wearing out cassettes figuring the song out, then practicing. My friend told me that most songs were basically the same chord progression and there were really only a few chord progressions that covered almost 95% of all songs. It was my introduction to music theory. And I have been studying (slowly) for 20+ years and am learning Jazz guitar right now… and more about Fingerstyle blues, rock and even working on techniques from Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed and Tommy Emmanuel. For me, it’s no longer a destination, it’s a journey. And I’m REALLY enjoying the journey. But just because I was 14 when I started doesn’t mean you have to be young to start. I’m teaching my neighbor who is in his 70’s. He is ready to do some Open Mics after a couple of years. He’s having a great time.
How can I think creatively?
By developing your natural God-given intuition. There are 2 kinds of creativity:One is to things that already exist in the world and combining them in new ways. The other is to bring something entirely new to the world. That is true creativity. The highly respected art instructor Dord Fitz used to tell his students, at the Area Arts Association in Amarillo, Texas, back in the 1960’s that they couldn’t be great artists unless they were great clairvoyants. That is why Dord and his students were to thrilled to learn that a lay researcher in Laredo, Texas, named Jose Silva had discovered a way to train anyone to be clairvoyant. The artists asked Mr. Silva to teach them how, and that was the very Silva Mind Control public course. You can see a short video with one of the artists in that class at Silva Creativity AppAccording to the artists who studies with him, Dord always told them: “Kids, claim your creative heritage.”
