PDF Editor FAQ

What should my friend do? He built an entire house on an existing log cabin. He didn't get permits. He's lived there 20 years. He wants to move/sell the house. What are his options? Who can/should he contact to answer these questions? Please help!

Oof. Yeah, this could be bad. I would suggest that your friend hire a real estate attorney who has a background in construction law and permitting issues. He should specifically ask for experience in that area.Or it might not matter even a bit. 20 years is a long time, things have changed. Maybe he will be able to get the permits retroactively. If you are in a state where you are obligated to reveal all improvements and whether you had permits for those improvements, refusing to provide that information is not really an option. If the new owner finds out and has problems, he will get sued.He also could end up with an expensive reassessment on his tax bill, depending again on where he lives and how much the value of the house has increased. The truth is he could be ordered to take out all of the improvements. Or it may not be a huge deal. It just depends on the zoning/permitting requirements where he built and how tough the government wants to be on him.He needs to start with a lawyer who knows their stuff in your jurisdiction. Someone local would be smart. Make sure they don’t work for the township before you call them though.

Is 0.780 Acres of land a lot?

33977 sq feet or 3120 m^2 is a very big house lot. Most suburban lots are about a third that size. You could even get away with planting vegetables or putting up a greenhouse if zoning permits. I recently saw on YouTube where a gardener was demonstrating how he consistently earns $100,000 per year in a temperate climate on less land.

To what extent should the government allow religious communities to construct new churches, mosques, synagogues, etc.?

What on Earth does the government have to do with building religious structures? In the US, we have freedom of religion which means the government has zero involvement in it. However, I’ll say I have seen a mosque be denied the zoning permits to build in an area because the local community raised an uproar over “traffic and noise” concerns. It was really anti Muslim rhetoric.Religion is not the responsibility of the government.
