I was attracted to Islam after getting influenced by the good behavior and piety of a Muslim friend at school. I never made the final step to conversion (Thank God!) but I did spend years learning Islam and following it. I offered prayers, I fasted during Ramadan. I read multiple translations of the Quran, I read multiple commentaries and interpretations. While there was much to love about things like zakat, the Urdu language, and the stories of Sufi saints and other pious religious figures, I was sickened by the core aspects of Islamic thought.For years, I defended the prophet’s marriage to Aisha. I defended the fact that he consummated his “marriage” with a child. I argued that girls back then matured early. Lol. I was horrible! I also blamed western scholars, the Jews (how original!), and Islamophobic evangelicals for not liking what I was reading in the translations.I was desperate to believe that all the English translations suffered from some inherent anti-Muslim bias. Otherwise, how could they all contain such blatantly inflammatory ideas. Non-believers burning in hell? men allowed to beat their wives (lightly! of course.)? lashing as a punishment for fornication? The messy conflation of fornication and rape as two sides of the same coin? Anti-gay injunctions? More inflammatory language about the mushrikeen, the kafiroon? Allowing men to have sex with war captives (sex slaves that the “right hand possesses”?I had enough at that point. I desperately sought answers from other progressive Muslims and most of them told me I needed to read the Quran in Arabic to understand it, that these English translations were terrible and they painted our perfect, wonderful deen in a bad light only to satisfy the western reader in a post-9/11 world.I took to reading tafsirs by Arab scholars. I watched videos. They were even worse. My friends still insisted that in order to understand, I needed to learn Arabic and read the Quran for myself. The Quran is too complex for successful translation into plain English.Then it struck me!Wait a minute! This book is supposed to be a guidance for all of mankind, for all times to come. It is supposed to be complete in every way. It is supposed to have all the answers. And yet, 95% of the world cannot successfully comprehend it because they either don’t know Arabic, or because the translations are not good enough, or because the tafsirs are inadequate.Lol at moi! God, the greatest would not make his message this complicated that no one is sure what it is and that it causes some people to murder tens of innocents just because they misunderstood what the book meant.No! If there is an all powerful God out there, his message would be simple, short, and direct. Everybody would know it in their bones. Everybody would know it by instinct even if they did not understand any language.Other than that, I was uncomfortable with how while Jews, Christians, and Sabians are to be seen as ‘ahl-e-qitab’ (people of the book), all other polytheists can be seen as plain old infidels. In the western world, this matters little because mostly people are either atheists (so all of this is nonsense to them) or they are Christian (in which case, they are not entirely dehumanized in Muslim theology). But if you come from an eastern civilization, like I do, you would be uncomfortable. My Buddhist and Hindu family are going to hell just because they are not Muslim? Or wait, as one sheik said, God is very just. So I should expect that he will be just to my family in the akhirah.That sounded so lame that it would not stand up even with crutches. So I was supposed to disregard the whole Quran because God is just and I should trust him? Wait, if that’s all I’m supposed to do, then why does the Quran even exist?Oh… right. For day-to-day matters like sex, inheritance, halal food, sex, warfare, marriage, sex, rules of prayer, menstruation, slavery laws (ahem!), sex… and other things.I couldn’t do it anymore, couldn’t pretend to believe in Islam when I knew in my heart that there were problems with it.I looked cute in a hijab. I liked the respect I was getting from total strangers. I enjoyed the adulation of the Muslim community who always told me how pious and virtuous I was for choosing the correct path.But I was really becoming a hypocrite. In reality, I was actually disgusted by a lot of Islamic teaching. Eventually, I left it all behind.Honestly, I don’t consider myself an Islamophobe because I am not scared of Islam. I am also not scared of Muslims. Most of them are nice people whose personal morality is far superior to the holy book they think they follow. That’s why I treat Muslims with the same respect I give to all other people. Muslims, like everyone else,, deserve to live in safety and comfort, with freedom to practice their faith in the domain of their home and their places of worship. Like all other people, they have the right to dress in accordance with their faith and to have options of Halal food wherever possible.But that does not mean I agree with their belief or that I would ever have any respect for all the tenets of their faith. Islam, like most other politico-religious ideologies, is incompatible with the 21st century. And that’s why I am never going back to it.

There are many reasonsThe main reason is that we Bengalis understand Hindi and our understanding fluency of Hind is just like UP wallas and Biharis.So, we are not forced to see a Bengali movie if its standard is below Hindi.I dont like the word “Hindi” movie because the modern Hindi movie is basically Urdu/ Punjabi movie. The dialogues are 80 % urdu and the mentality and spirit is Punjabi. Just to inform you, many Punjabis consider Hindi as their mother tongue. Bollywood is in Maharashtra and claim to make movies in the state language of UP, MP, Bihar, Rajasthan, Haryana, Chhatisgarh and Jharkhand. In reality, there is nothing Hindi or Marathi in “Hindi” movies. They are only made in Hindi to get a nationwide audience.I repeat, the culture and spirit of Bollywood is Urdu and Punjabi. It represents a hypothetical, non existent, secular, non religious Western Punjab (Pakistan). Thats the area Urdu and Punjabi got mixed.Anyways, lets get back to the question. With full respect to South Indian movies, if South Indians were fluent in Hindi, Bollywood would have won their also.Megasthenes said many days ago, no other races on earth are fond of singing and dancing like the Indians. And which Indians are they???? The Punjabis.The bengali population just like any population is divided into 3 types.People who love good movies , good storyline, good acting , good dialogues etcPeople who are atelectuals (self proclaimed intellectuals) who try to show their mental power by seeing movies which they cannot understand. In fact, I dont think, even the actors, producers and directors can understand these movies. These are art movies.The mob. They want quick masti. They dont have much mental capacity. They dont want to think much. Hollywood has a formula of sex + violence for them. Bollywood’s formula was songs and dance. Now, they have added sex but it has to be in limits.The market for Bengali movie is not less than French, Japanese, Italian, Polish, German or Romanian movie. The Bengali directors made a mistake of looking at Bollywood instead of Europe. If you add songs and dances, you cannot even touch Bollywood. They are world no. 1. In there movies, the spirit of Bactria and Kushan lives once again. Its a dream world. If you go to Delhi, you will see a spirit of life among its people. Even the rickshaw wallas are full of life.When the Bengali mob gets connected with this spirit, there is 100% chance it will get influenced by it.The Bengali movies from 1980- 2000 hardly had any stories. There waa just a patch up. Poor theme, poor story line, poor songs. The dance and fights sequences were copied from Bollywood. People never liked to see these movies.Dancing and singing in Bengali movies will always be failure. Racially, Bengalis and North Indians are different races just like japanese and Kazakhs. Dancing has never been a part of popular Bangali culture. They dont like to see actors dancing in Bengali movie. They find it unnatural. When they see dances in Hindi movies, they dont care. They enjoy it.What was needed was emphasis is fights and minimum emphasis in romance. Something which Hollywood does. The love marriage rate in Bengali society is nearly 80% in cities and 30- 50% in villages. So, the Bengali audience does not need to see movie romance to make up his / her romantic frustration. Something which works in Upper Gangetic Plain wont work in Lower Gangetic Plain.The producers and directors wanted easy money. Copy the theme of some Bollywood movie and make a new bull shit. Thats not way. What should have been done-Make movies with good story line. It can be adventure, mystery, love story, detective story, pure family story, story of growing up, story of struggle, historical, mythological etcThe mob can be attracted by fight scenes. Make movies with tremendous violence & adventure.It may sound bad, but, copy non English European and South American movies. You copied from Bollywood. I am asking you to steal from France. People wont understand.Make movies on Bengali history, folk tales, mythologyBengali movie is not a regional office of second tier of Bollywood. The directors should have understood itThey should have taken inspiration from Europe and not from Bollywood.They should have understood the psychology of Bengali middle class.Make up these and they will develop.Infact, the movies Chander Pahar, Amazon Jungle are very good commercial movies. Produce more movies of this type and Bengali movie will grow.
