Here’s an apparently little read article from January 9, 2016 that ran in the Washington Post which examines his career at New York Military Academy, a prep school about fifty miles up the Hudson River from New York City. It details his performance and career at this mid-level college prep school specializing, as do many military schools, in providing a structured, disciplined environment for not very able or cooperative students. The school was reported, in the NY Times, to have gone out of business in 2015.Donald Trump later was accepted and enrolled at Fordham University, a private Catholic University in New York City. Fordham has become a highly competitive national university, but when Donald Trump enrolled there in 1964 it was a local college of middling quality. After two years there he transferred to the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, from which he graduated in 1968. The famed Wharton Business School is best known for its MBA and advanced degree programs, which are world-famed. The undergraduate school, which is a part of the University of Pennsylvania is a well-regarded Ivy League college. An article from the Philadelphia Inquirer indicates that few, if any, students who attended Penn with Trump have any memory of him at all.While Mr. Trump claims to have a high IQ, but since no evidence of a test having been taken, there’s no source other than Mr. Trump himself that we can trust on his claim. Scholars have estimated the grade level of his speech as being at the fourth grade level. Unless he purposely lowers his level of discourse to stay in touch with his base, there’s a good chance his linguistic ability accurately reflects his intelligence.Having watched Mr. Trump for the past several years, it has become clear to me that he is deeply insecure about how smart he really might be. He covers his lack of insight and ability with bluster and bullying. He never quotes accurate facts. He’s almost always faking it. He brings neither intelligence nor hard work to his performance, and that’s what it is, as President.Thanks to the Constitution and the good sense of the American voters, there is now an opposition. We can only hope the damage Trump does will be reduced by having this change of leadership in the House of Representatives. We can only trust and believe that the nightmare will end in 2020.

Pomposity of the Headmaster.We were touring looking for an English prep school (that’s to say, a school that starts at age 7 and goes to age 13.)My wife wrote to a whole bunch asking each to send a prospectus. Not all of them managed this difficult task, but we ended up touring a couple close to us.At one of them, the headmaster talked about how privileged he was to work in such a fantastic environment, with such great staff.At the other, the headmaster talked about himself in the open day speech. Then on meeting us face to face afterwards, uttered the phrase “I don’t mean to scare you, but under my leadership the school has become a lot more popular, so if you are thinking of applying, I’d advise you to do so soon.”Mary Harrison was too gracious to actually reply, but told me later that what she’d wanted to say was “I’m sorry you have an oversubscription problem. We won’t make it worse.”As you might imagine, we chose the first.

It all depends on how the family handles their money in relation to their kids.Some rich teens are depressed and miserable because the families abandon them to nannies and prep schools. Others are taught to give back and that doing service is a strong family value as is family closeness.Most go to prep schools and are taught the games associated with having money like skiing, tennis, golf, horseback riding and jumping, sailing.Most are taught that having money is a responsibility that has to be learned and requires that they assume leadership as adults.Don’t think that the media version of the spoiled rich kid who has money to burn is what most wealthy teens are in reality.
