How is India viewed outside India?
Last year I visited Italy. One day, while walking through the streets of Florence, An Italian young lady suddenly came in front of me and very politely asked in English whether she can talk to me for a moment. We frequently encounter these in India where people are usually trying to sell you credit cards, or want to register you in some lucky draw etc. I usually ignore these people in India, but since it was a different country and the woman was very polite, I agreed to listen to her.She pointed her finger to another lady, standing at the other side of the road in front of a small table. these are some lottery ticket like papers on the table and a big box. Near the second woman, a street artist is drawing on the road using chalk. This is the actual photo I took.(Some friends in comments are asking whether the cars in background are WagonR or not. They are not wagonR. They are Opel Agila. If you zoom the image in a pc, you will see the circular opel logo in front. Also the guy painting is a white European. The lighting is making his skin appear dark. Zoom enough too see small details! )She told me that they are organizing a fundraiser for the street artists and their families. If I want to contribute something they will be very grateful.I was in a dilemma. In India, Although I am a regular contributor to UNICEF for years, I don’t usually give money to random people in Streets asking for help. Why should I donate something to a country which is way more developed than my own country? On another thought, It came to mind how the British media mocked us when we sent a spaceship to Mars, Many foreigners see us as a country who take Aid from them to fund our space program. Many see us as a corrupt, filthy and unsafe nation.I decided that I will contribute so that I can tell myself that yes, I have also given my 2 cents to charity for a European nation.I walked to the 2nd lady and donated a 10 euro note in the box.She thanked me and asked in Broken English “Sir where are you from?”I said “India”She folded her hand and did a “Namaste” while bowing her head. I was taken aback, but I quickly returned the greetings by doing a “Namaste” myself. I did not tell her that the gesture is too formal in modern India. I was happy that she knew how to greet someone from India. She asked “Are you from Bombay ?” (She used Bombay, not Mumbai)I said “No” while signing the donation form. She said “I want to visit India one day, and I want to go to Bombay. so many colorful people there, so much music and dance”I said “Usually people think about bollywood when then hear the city Bombay, but people don't dance around in the streets like they show on movies”She smiled and said “then are you from delhi? the taj mahal”I did not even try to tell her that Taj Mahal is not in delhi, I said “No, I came from Kolkata” I was sure that she has never heard about Kolkata. Most British people know about Kolkata as it was the capital of India for long time under british rule. Also most Americans know about “bangalore - the city that takes their jobs” but no possibility of an Italian woman knowing about Kolkata. To my surprise her face suddenly lit up. She smiled and said “Oh you came from the city of mother teresa”.That was completely unexpected. I was taken aback. She said that she is a long time admirer of Mother Teresa and her charity work in Kolkata. Mother teresa was the inspiration behind her own charity work for the street artists, where I have just donated 10 euro. She said “Mother went to India to help those who needed help the most. Now with donations from you we will be able to help those who need it here”I was a bit emotional, as a Kolkatan, I am grateful to Mother teresa’s contribution for my City and country. I said, “sorry I could not donate more, I am on a very tight budget in this trip.” I actually was.She said “No need to worry, No donation is less or more, every penny counts”.India is not only viewed as a Dance hub or corruption hub, It is also viewed as a spiritual and humanitarian hub where people care and devote for each other, I realized it in Florence.(Ending this answer with a completely unnecessary photo of myself in front of Palazzo del duomo, Florence)
How much money has Trump made from people supporting his election fraud allegations?
Almost half a billion. The poor supporters are sending in $20, $50 and $100’s, often money they can’t afford to give. The small print on the donation forms says the money can be used for campaign, business and personal debts. This is the easiest money Trump has ever made and he will keep it up as long as he can. He is building a “war chest” to fight the barrage of existing and new legal and criminal cases against him and his family.Abusing his base in this way is really sad and pathetic.
What type of student is at an elite college?
There are 3-types of students at elite colleges: The rich, the average and the scholarship students. The student population is mostly young ( 18–25 years old), 50% male & 50% female, 85–90% white caucasian ( and Asian), and 10–15% hispanic, black and others. About half of them are in the “rich” category, one quarter in the 2nd “average” category and last quarter in the “ scholarship” category. The rich students are those that come from very wealthy families. Their families donate lots of money to the college. Some even got buildings named after them. This category of students generate massive amounts of money to the college. They did not need financial aid or scholarships. They are paying full-price tuition fees and other related expenses.Half of them do well in school, but the other half just want to do well enough to graduate. For them, good grades are okay, but not a priority. If you are not in this group, you will be amazed when they tell you about their christmas and summer vacation stories. Months long trips to Europe, Australia, skiing vacation in Aspen, CO or Vail, etc.The scholarship students are a complete opposite of the rich students. These are great students in school. Generally, they come from low-income families, and are first generation college students. They got admitted to the college with full scholarships because of their academic excellence and extra-curricular activities. Everything paid for. They were brought there so that the college can boast about diversity at the college. For them, it is a win-win situation. It is very easy to get jobs on campus because rich kids don’t need part-time jobs really. They increase the average GPA of the student body, allowing the college to brag about their 3.50 average GPA or higher. There are lots of opportunities to this category of students. Study abroad options, network of wealthy employers, mission trips paid and available funds to attend professional conferences, etc. Photo below and above, I am 2nd left, at American Physical Society Conference in Denver, CO.3. The average students are those who are half and half. They come from middle class families. They got some form of financial aid and might have manageable amount of student loans. They also work hard and do well in school. They add an interesting mix to the campus environment just like the other two.In either one of these cases, having students from all backgrounds create a rich environment to the school. I went to a similar college, and was a scholarship student. First generation college student, full-4 year scholarship with everything paid off. Books, expenses, etc. Life was good back then. I was so fortunate I went to Hendrix College. As I observe how rich other parents’ kids were, it made me dream even more and bigger. I am sure I gave them an interesting perspective too. Without the scholarship, there is no way in the world, I would have even dreamed to go to such an expensive liberal arts private college. For that, I will always be grateful. Now, I am working hard so that if ever I have kids, they get to attend an elite college in category 1. That is the American dream, isn’t it?#GoWarriorsDidier Champion
