Is India changing?
Here is the incident happened to me recently. There was a maid who used to come to our place to clean. Suddenly she started struggling with her health and later it was found that she had cancer. So she stopped coming to our place. However as she is staying close by, I could follow what was happening. I was aware that she had a BPL Card so she could get help from the government hospital. One fine day she came and told that her BPL card was expired and the government hospital people asked her to get it renew by Tehsildar for which she has to pay Rs.1000-1500. It was too much amount for her. So in the evening i went to her house and explained her son (who was old enough) that he should visit to BDA (Bangalore Development Authority) office to understand the process. After weeks passed she came to my place and said her son did not do what I said to him. This was going no where and she was struggling with her health. I asked her to get her docs and took her to BDA complex on my vehicle. We came to know that there is another office (Bangalore one office) where we can get the exact info.We immediately went there and there was huge queue. As Saturday is half working day in government office I thought we won't get our turn. With local language barrier, somehow in Hindi and English I explained her situation to people standing in queue. They agreed and gave her highest priority. When our turn came i explained entire situation to Bangalore one office people. It turned out to be totally emotional situation. I could see almost tears in their eyes and when operator checked the status in computer for the BPL card,it was found out that it was valid card. It was just way to get 1000-1500 bugs from such poor people. Then operator and other people got so much angry on hospital staff. With full agony and anger she took printout of the status and said to my maid "Just show this to hospital and if they ask for money tell them that I will file Police FIR" .On Tuesday my maid went to hospital and till now she is getting treatment without any problem.People in hospital may have not improved but the real thing was what happened in Bangalore One office. I just salute those people.
What are the dirtiest secrets of NITs?
Being graduated recently from NIT-Trichy, I consider myself eligible to answer this question. For those who are going to join NITs this year and in future, I would like to share some pearls of wisdom that I wish I had known in first year and meanwhile reveal some of the dirtiest secret.Don't believe everything that seniors tell you. When I joined NITT, I heard from my seniors that first year GPA are not counted for placements and higher studies. Although this may not seem unharmful at first, I can assure you that this alone has destroyed many bright minds. Most imp. Your score for the rest of the sems usually revolves around your first two sem results. With that being said, your GPA does matter. If one is interested in highers GPA matters, no doubt. But for those interested in placement, it is equally significant, although not a necessity. I was the Placement Committee Head and believe me, CGPA is most important factor for placement.Even though Civil Engineering is a really good branch, it fails to provide placement opportunities (more than half fail to get placed in core companies). So, if Civil as a branch is not your first priority, avoid opting it.Doctors are really really shit in college hospitals. Warning: Long story ahead.I am saying this from personal experience when I had a boil on the back of my neck. I went to my college doctor who gave me standard medicines for 2 weeks (Doctors here are so talented that they start prescribing medicine as soon as you enter their room). Since it didn't heal, he asked to take some tests which came negative. So, he gave me medicines for 2 more weeks. Still it didn't work. Then he told me that I may have a rare form of Skin Tuberculosis seen only in USA. He even wrote the scientific name of disease on a piece of paper and gave it to me and asked me to google it. And as some of you may have experienced, once you start googling all symptoms point to only one medical condition, cancer. Just imagine the condition of a boy living 2000km away from home and taking medicines for with no improvement and finally the doctor instead of any consolation gives him a name of disease (maybe cancer) and asks him to google it. He even told me that he can give me antibiotics for 4 months which may work. I was so frightened that I asked him whether I should go home today or I can wait for one more day as I had my cycle test going on. I wanted to bunk my tests as I thought I should not be spending my last few days writing tests. But since I had only 2 exams left, my mother convinced me to write them so that I may not have to repeat semester. I asked the college doctor that I can wait. He told me I should go to BHEL doctor nearby or go home and consult some senior doctor as he is my last hope. So, according to him, even in my best case scenario I will have to take min 4 months of antibiotics which may work. I somehow sat for exams and left the same night. I met a good doctor as my home place and he told me it's just a boil due to heat and will heal in 1 week with proper medication. But we were not sure so we had full body X-ray and sonography which proved that I was perfectly healthy. After a week the boil melted and in 2 weeks I was back to college. Just imagine what would have happened if I had started that course. I still consider this decision as one of my best decisons ever. Even though this episode got over after 2 months, I still suffer due to hormonal imbalances owing to the wrong medication. After that I never go to college hospitals and always consult my doctor on whatapp or call. There are many other incidents like this which my friends have experienced. Note: this is my personal experience and may not have happened this others. There may be some good doctors but most of them are terrible.Probably the most important one as most of you may not know this. Most NITs have placements above 90% even though out of a class of 100, only 70 get placed. I will tell how this is possible. Most NITs have a screening test before placements which decides student eligible for placements (at some places this is based on separate placements tests and at some places this is decided by CGPA). College is responsible for placing only those who pass these test and not the full strength. So, out of a class of 100, some 20 will go for highers. The rest 80 will be screened and only those who pass (about 70) will be allowed to sit for placements first. After these students, for whom the college is responsible, get placed, others will be allowed to sit. Also, unlike old IITs, most of the NITs don't allow double placements. So, if you get placed in one company in the first month of placements, you are stuck with it. So, this increases the ratio.Note: This answer is not to besmirch the good name of NIT. I myself am a product of NIT-T and am proud to be an NITian. I have started my corporate life now and have made many friends from prestigious institutes across the country including other IITs, NITs and BITs. The education and opportunities here are at par with any other institute across India and feel proud to be a part of it.Note: I will try to add some more revelations in future. I hope you liked it. Thanks.
