PDF Editor FAQ

What do management consultants actually do - can you briefly walk me through a workday at BCG/McKinsey/Bain etc.?

Basically they solved the toughest problems for mid-size to large companies worldwide. Fundamentally, they have to ensure providing 3 thingsa) providing clarity of what the problem is and how you plan to solve itb) not alienating your client/peers on steps you are doingc) data gathering through MECE - mostly what’s being used is a Pareto principle approach that allows you to drive data gathering issues. This video presents an overview of one of the courses in our Strategy Training Library. Each course follows one real client over a full 8 to 12 week study. It captures every element of a real strategy study, including explanations of technical and soft skills like storyboards, hypotheses, model building, managing clients and more. Let us know if you like the material or would like to see other courses.

What type of work does an entry-level consultant out of college do at top management consultancies like McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Strategy& (Booz) etc.?

Great question! The short answer is that entry level team members basically do 1) data gathering 2) analysis and 3) slide making. Let’s go through each of these in detail.Data gathering / cleaning: in any case, there is usually a substantial data gathering component. This could be first hand research (eg doing customer interviews, employee interviews or running surveys) or simply collecting and collating client data (eg output by factory, sales revenue per salesperson, etc). As an entry level member (eg Analyst or Associate Consultant), the bulk of this work will fall to you. The Research teams will often be available to support you if you’re looking to collect externally available data or internal benchmarks your firm has established. However, even with that support, you’ll own this while the Senior Consultants and Engagement Managers focus more on directing work streams and ensuring the overall case is proceeding correctly.Analysis / model building: After you’ve collected and cleaned all the data, you’ll do a lot of modeling and analysis as well. The type of analysis will run the complete gamut. It could be analyzing the results of a conjoint survey for consumer preferences on self-driving cars to building a market forecast for US skin care products targeted toward males. Regardless of the type of analysis and model building, you can expect to drive a large chunk of this work. In many cases, you’ll have Senior Consultants working along side you on this. If it’s a really big analysis, you’ll divvy the work out and each own components or maybe you’ll each be working on totally separate pieces of analysis (eg one person owns survey analysis, one person owns market forecasting).Slide making: McKinsey, BCG and Bain all have design teams that can help you pretty up slides (eg nice graphics), but you will be responsible for putting the output of your analysis and recommendations onto slides themselves and creating the “bones” of the slide. Given that strategy consultants deliver recommendations, a large amount of work will go into what goes on the slide, what the best way to represent everything is so that it has the maximum positive impact on the client. It might seem like slide making is easy, but consultants have turned it into an art. At BCG, I once made 27 versions of the same value chain slide for over the top television services (eg HBO, Netflix)!Represent your work to Partners & clients: Bonus one! In most cases, even as a very junior team member you will be asked (and have the honor) of presenting your work to the Partners and top Clients on the case. This is one of the key reasons consulting can be a very rewarding and high impact job, even at the junior levels. You’ll take total responsibility for your work and when it goes well, you’ll get the credit and the chance to represent it to execs! This is just a snapshot, and there will be variations here and there but I think this is a pretty accurate picture of “the 80%” of what you’ll do an an entry level consultant. And, of course, this is just the start. As you move up the ranks, you’ll define work streams, direct your team, manage the clients and ultimately sell cases. I wrote about the career path of a consultant, and the evolving set of responsibilities at these firms (eg McK, BCG, Bain), in detail here. It includes responsibilities per level, tenure at each level and salary bands (the good stuff)!

A client goes to a councillor/therapist and recounts what’s happened. The councillor either believes that or they don’t, and the treatment totally depends on their belief? – two very different courses of action dependent on belief of recounted story?

I was relieved when I read all 13 answers. They were unanimous in agreemement, even the guy who complained about your punctuation, that we just don’t care if it’s factually true, and either way it’s not going to impact the therapy.I’ve spent a lot of time in courtrooms and I can tell you nobody ever tells “the whole truth and nothing but the truth,” even if they are really trying hard to do so. If they could, and did, there’d be no needed for direct and cross-examination.It doesn’t happen in court, all you get is an approximation at best, and that were accuracy really counts and there are severe penalties for lying. It’s not even relevant in psychotherapy, which has little to do with accurate data gathering. The client is telling their truth, insofar as they feel able and free to do so, at that moment in time, along with all the context and body language and non-verbals. And that truth is what therapy deals with.
