What's it like to have attended an elite school and then be an utter failure afterward?

To my utter astonishment, In the spring of 1988 I was accepted into a particular Ivy League institution my mom had "strongly encouraged" me to apply to. I had been prepared to attend UC Santa Cruz, the first school I received an acceptance letter from.I attended school with people who became attorneys, executives, doctors, tech entrepreneurs. One girl who sang with a rival a capella group became a prominent actress and talk-show host. A gifted cartoonist from the class above is now an executive journalist at ABC news. Another young man from my class became the principal writer of the hottest TV show of 2014.Fast-forward five years, to the spring of 1993, when I opened the last of the rejection letters from 13 law schools I had applied to, this one from a commuter-grade school near my parents' home ranked near the bottom of all the rating guides. The accolades were most definitely at an end.I had graduated in the bottom tenth of my class the previous year, an utter mediocrity academically. I limped through four years, turning in anemic research papers, laden with spontaneous whimsy, chronically late, and cramming ineffectively for exams. My somewhat inflated college application had masked absolutely atrocious study habits that never improved during my four emotionally taxing years. In addition, I was beset, the winter before I went away to school, by chronic anxiety, manifesting mostly as OCD, that made being around people unbearable much of the time, and made it difficult to concentrate on anything except very disturbing irrational thoughts in my head. I almost dropped out my junior spring. In my twenties, living at my parents' house, I worked sporadic temp jobs, was fired from restaurant jobs, delivered pizzas. I enrolled in art school and dropped out after two years. I worked in a chain bookstore for a year, just marking time. Ashamed of working retail, I took a job in insurance claims, where a friend was working, a "real" job, it seemed to me. This job stressed me out so much that I quit after eight months. I was twenty-seven.At this point, others I had gone to school with were, at least from my vantage point, finishing grad school, building their careers at large, important firms, starting tech companies. They were living in the city, surrounded by excitement, other young people, countless opportunities. I was living in ,my childhood bedroom and eating dinner with my parents each night. Perhaps I could have found a way to break free, meet some people, join one of the "dot-com" companies I was reading about every day in the San Francisco Chronicle, but I hadn't kept in touch with anyone from school, wasn't meeting anyone, didn't know anything about computers beyond how to use software everyone's mom knew how to use. I told myself these things, and I didn't do anything. My mom had been a teacher. I had been holding out against the idea of becoming a teacher for years, but it seemed like a sensible course of action at this point. I was accepted into a yearlong program, graduated, and found a job fairly quickly. The job only lasted two years, because I found I wasn't particularly good at keeping order in the classroom. At another job I found I lasted only two years, once again, before being let go. I spent twelve years teaching at six different schools in California and later North Carolina, and at at every school I found I just didn't have a knack for bending students to my will.I've made attempts to get out. In 2002 after being non-renewed for the second time, I tried breaking into construction. I got a job driving a debris removal truck but was fired after three days for backing into a gas station sign trying to get out of a tight space. In 2010 I had kind of a "breakdown" and left my sixth teaching position after two months. I started a landscaping business the next year, but after two years making about $600 a month after expenses, I was forced back into teaching. I thought I might have some new ideas about becoming better organized and controlling students after two years out, but last week I was, once again, non-renewed from my seventh teaching assignment in sixteen years.I am forty-four years old. I am racking my brain for any marketable skills I may have besides standing up in front of kids and attempting to explain math. I have no savings. Thankfully, miraculously, I have a roof over my head and that of my wife and three kids because we take care of an elderly relative who bought us a home.We have no health insurance currently. I once dreamed of becoming an artist, but it seems like a ridiculous thing to think of with a family to support. Besides a few paintings here and there, the only thing of any value I have done since graduating college is start a beautiful family. That's no small thing, to be sure, but they need to be fed. And I get a sick, burning feeling in my chest when I read stories about successful people: actors, entrepreneurs, engineers, scientists. I don't keep in touch from anyone from my school, and I usually don't acknowledge I went there except for the obligatory inclusion on a resume.

Why is having a personal injury lawyer important?

These are the benefits of hiring an attorney on a personal injury claim:Free Consultations. Most personal injury attorneys give free consultations to prospective clients. In some cases, the attorney will utilize hard sale tactics during the initial consultation. Because of this, sometimes it is difficult to leave the attorney’s office without signing a contingency fee agreement. However, since youdo not owe the attorney anything for the free consultation, you can tell him that you want to speak to other attorneys before making your decision to hire one. You can obtain valuable information about the merits of your accident claim during this consultation. If the attorney does not spend much time with you during the initial consultation and doesn’t answer all of your questions, this is some indication of how he will probably handle your claim. Make list of questions for the consultation. This will afford greater knowledge and insight into your personal injury claim.Your attorney should handle your first party coverages.Medical Payments Coverage and Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist Coverage. First party coverages are those coverages that you have on your own policy that you can use to maximize your recovery on your personal injury auto accident claim. There is no subrogation (payback) on auto Medical Payments Coverage in the state of Nevada. There is generally a right of subrogation on health insurance policies. Medical Payments Coverage can work with your health insurance coverage to reduce your exposure to medical bills and to take advantage of provider discounts on your health insurance policy. This interaction is complicated, and it takes specialized knowledge and skill to utilize these coverages to an injured person’s advantage. An experienced personal injury attorney can save you thousands of dollars on your medical bills. Uninsured Motorist Coverage and Underinsured Motorist Coverage apply when the at fault driver has no, or too little, coverage to compensate the victims of a personal injury car accident. If your claim involves an Underinsurance claim, it will involve many intricate features that a layperson just cannot handle on their own.Subrogation liens of health insurance carriers. If your health insurance pays your accident-related medical bills, subrogation (payback) rights or liens of the health insurance carrier will generally be asserted. Some of these liens involve Federal ERISA law, and some don’t. There are many technical arguments that a personal injury attorneys can use to reduce these liens, even if ERISA is involved. The “make whole doctrine” can be utilized to drastically reduce or even extinguish the health insurance lien. All of these aspects of a personal injury claim are very time consuming and are too complicated for you to handle on your own.Reduced stress.Once you hire an attorney on a personal injury claim, the attorney will deal with the insurance companies on your behalf. The end result will be reduced stress to you. Some personal injury attorneys don’t handle your property damage, because it involves a lot of time and effort for little, or no, compensation.Ask the attorney during the initial consultation if he handles property damage. If he doesn’t, he is not providing you with full service for his contingency fee. If he does, he is most likely a full-service Personal Injury Lawyer, and he will not take a contingency fee on the property damage and rental car aspects of your claim. This is major benefit of attorney representation.Statute of Limitations. Many victims of personal injury accidents who are not represented by an attorney fall victim to Statutes of Limitations. These are cut-off periods of time that can extinguish your claim. It these statutes of repose are “blown” by not filing a Complaint with the appropriate Court within the relevant Statute of Limitations, the result will be your inability to recover against the adverse party and/or his insurance coverage. You lose the right to sue the adverse party.Different statutes of limitations apply to third-party claims (claims against the other party’s liability coverage) and first party claims against your own insurance company. Your attorney will protect your interests regarding these cut-off dates.Determining the amount of available insurance for the other person. It is important to know at the beginning of a claim how much insurance the liable party has. You do not want to get into a situation where you generate thousands of dollars of medical bills and there is not enough insurance coverage (including health insurance, Medical Payments Coverage, liability coverage from the other party and Uninsured/Undersinsured Motorist Coverage) pay for them. Lay persons don’t have the know how to obtain this information. What compensation am I entitled to?An experienced attorney will advise you concerning what you can expect on your claim. The types of compensation that you are entitled to may change with time and the course of your medical treatment.Proof of wage loss to an adverse carrier generally involves doctor’s excuses, pay stubs to track your earnings history prior to the accident, payroll records showing your actual wage loss, and a letter from your employer explaining your job and compensation. If you have a substantial wage loss claim, you need an attorney to handle this aspect of your claim.Knowledge of insurance law.Lay persons are not familiar with insurance laws that may impact your case. Nevada case law (decisions of our state supreme court) that interpret the provisions of a insurance policy’s language applying to coverages, limitations and exclusions. If your claim involves insurance coverages issues, you definitely need an attorney involved at the beginning of your case.Ability to negotiate. The hammer that the attorney has on a personal injury claim is that he can file suit causing the adverse insurance carrier to spend time and money to defend it. The layperson is not capable of putting this pressure on an insurance carrier. Therefore, the claimant will have much less negotiating power with the involved insurance company. The attorney can also sue the insurance company for bad faith on first party claims, if the insurance company doesn’t handle your claim fairly.Deciding to settle or file suit. This is always the big question on a personal injury claim. Many factors must be taken into consideration in making this decision. An experienced attorney can assist you in making this important decision.Minimize the downside risks. There are downside financial consequence associated with not prevailing in a personal injury lawsuit. Complicated laws involving Offers of Judgment apply. An attorney will advise you concerning the financial risks of litigation. He can do things to reduce your exposure to these risks. Many complicated rules apply. If you lose your case, the other side will likely try to get their attorneys fees and costs from you.Someone to talk to.A personal injury claim is a new and frustrating experience for most accident victims. Your attorney will be with you every step of the way to advise you on all important maters involving your case or claim. You will have someone that you can call or send an email to, who can answer your questions and to advise you along the course of your claim. If you don’t have an attorney, you will likely rely on erroneous information from your friends, that may cause you to make the wrong decisions on your claim.Representation in court. Most people are overwhelmed by litigation. I see unrepresented people every day in court struggling with the court rules and procedures. Even if you end up in small claims court, the system will eat up pro per (unrepresented) parties. Their cases are often dismissed for failure to comply with the rules. If your case involves any type of litigation, you need an attorney.Having Court Costs and Expenses advanced. Most attorneys will advance costs for medical experts and the costs of litigation. Litigation is very expensive. Filing fees have more than doubled in the last few years. Most injured parties don’t have the financial means to pay the costs associated with obtaining a report from a medical expert which is often required to obtain a decent settlement.and Many more……….If you are around West Virginia And North Carolina, Contact Jan dils Attorney at Law “ An experience Personal attorney in west Virginia and North Carolina “ to fight for you wit offices in Parkersburg, Beckley, Charleston, Huntington, Logan, as well as one additional office in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Who are the United States's major enemies?

America. Our current mode of self-destruction is self-evident. Our paranoia of others has created a hostile world to America’s dominance and that paranoia seems to grow every day. Our political and economic decline is beginning to show signs of self-decay. We seem unable to seek peace without a war. We see enemies even with friends. Our allies of WW2 are now our enemies and our enemies are our allies. We say democracy, but we accept dictators if they are our dictators. We don’t condone democracies that oppose us. Regime change is our practice where others oppose America’s interests. Trump personifies that means to an end. That end may be coming soon.“The big picture: Views of the U.S. and its leadership are in sharp decline around the world — particularly among America's closest allies.According to a 2017 Pew survey, 39% of respondents across 38 countries consider U.S. influence and power a major threat to their countries, compared to 31% for both Russia and China. That’s up from 25% in 2013, when the survey was conducted previously.Approval of U.S. global leadership fell to 30% worldwide, per a January Gallup poll. That’s narrowly behind China (31%) and ahead of Russia (27%). It’s also the lowest score in the 10 years the survey has been conducted, and down from 48% in Barack Obama’s last year.America’s favorability around the world has fallen sharply, particularly among key allies like Mexico, Canada and Germany. And that was before Trump's trade war and Iran deal withdrawal.”At spiking levels, foreign countries now see the U.S as a threatAmericans’ perceptions of their country’s allies and enemies are hard to changeWorld's Approval of U.S. Leadership Drops to New Low“In numbers, a lot about the United States appears to be on the decline. Of course, you can focus on the positive numbers like unemployment and the stock market, but they do not excuse the statistics that are so out of keeping with America’s image as the world’s leading developed nation. When viewed together, the darker statistics paint a worrying picture of a country failing on some of the most fundamental measures that we — including Americans — would consider the foundations of a successful and advanced nation. These are the failings by which we judge other, less advanced nations, yet they persist in the United States itself. But the biggest tragedy of this story is that many of the victims of these failings tried to bring around change by voting for a renegade who promised to make their country “great again,” and who has now entirely turned his back on them.An article about a recent report on income disparity in San Francisco ranked the city equal with Rwanda for its gap between rich and poor. Such comparisons are a trend that starts to emerge across U.S. statistics. The report found that:This income inequality also has a racial component: the average white San Franciscan makes three times more money than the average black resident, 66 percent more than the average Latino resident, and 44 percent more than the average Asian resident. This sort of imbalance is what countries look like before revolutions. Numbers like these are referred to in history books when they ask why that period in history ended. You only need to peer over at Venezuela for an idea of what can happen next. Or down to Charlottesville to see angry white men marching under Nazi flags, reminiscent of Germany in the 1930s. Those things are linked to societal imbalances and poor government. The big one, the statistic of statistics, is life expectancy. The United States ranks 31st in the table of countries by life expectancy, just one above Cuba (32), and well below most Western countries (UK is 20th; Canada is 12th). Life expectancy is an important measure when judging how a country is run, because at the end of the day, surely, keeping people alive is the most basic duty of a government. The United States does a worse job of this than bankrupt Greece, or Costa Rica. While Trump can’t be blamed for the trend, removing health insurance from more than 20 million of the most vulnerable Americans will make this worse, not better. The United States is the only developed country where maternal mortality is rising. Whereas 3.8 women per 100,000 die from childbirth in Finland, 26.4 women die in the United States. Women in the United States are three times more likely to die in the maternal period than their Canadian neighbors. This number of deaths per 100,000 has dropped significantly in all developing nations, and even in Russia, Vietnam, Romania, and Iran. It has risen only in places like South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and…the United States. If anyone had any doubt about the link between funding for maternal health care and maternal mortality, they just need to look at Texas, where maternal death rates doubled in a two-year period, from 2011 to 2012, after the state legislature cut $73.6 million from the state’s family planning budget of $111.5 million. Consequently, Texas now has the highest maternal death rate in the developed world. This was a policy led by hard-right conservatives, who are also heavily influenced by religious and ideological beliefs and clearly not looking objectively at the evidence in front of them. This religious extremism affects the United States now at the highest level, with Christian fundamentalists in senior government positions, including the vice president, but also those responsible for science-related areas of policy like climate change. When the most powerful country on earth veers toward the Bible instead of science books to form policy, the whole world suffers, as we have already seen in Trump withdrawing from the Paris climate agreement.Another aspect of the new Trump-era America that is more reminiscent of a madeup-istan parody is the gerrymandering. Stories, like that of North Carolina, that we would elsewhere call blatant vote rigging, will astonish outsiders who think of the United States as “the land of the free” and a champion of democracy. It seems bewildering that this beacon of democracy, in which Republicans claim to be the ones safeguarding American freedom, has such profound examples of (primarily) Republican politicians manipulating democratic system like this. It damages the United States’ leadership globally when it tries to bring democracy to other countries. On education, the Pew Research Center writes that out of 71 countries, the United States sits in an unimpressive 38th in math and 24th in science. Among the 35 members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, which sponsors the PISA initiative, the United States ranked 30th in math and 19th in science. And then there are the guns. Granted, other developed nations allow their citizens to own firearms, but the extent of gun ownership and gun usage in the United States dwarfs the rest of the developed world. Quoting a report in the American Journal of Medicine, CBS writes:Even though it has half the population of the other 22 [developed] nations combined, the United States accounted for 82% of all gun deaths. The United States also accounted for 90% of all women killed by guns, the study found. 91% of children under 14 who died by gun violence were in the United States. And 92% of young people between ages 15 and 24 killed by guns were in the United States. What is so disappointing is that Trump’s government seems intent on making all of this worse. As these statistics worsen, the United States will slip down more and more on global tables, finding itself uncomfortably on par with undeveloped, war-torn, undemocratic, failing states. At what point does it actually become one?”The Decline and Fall of America (In Numbers)‘We have met the enemy and he is us’ (Pogo)
