PDF Editor FAQ
How common is it for American companies to prohibit firearms from their office space?
In every company for which I’ve worked, consulted or advised, which has had an employee handbook, the handbook has explicitly said “no firearms”.Except one.In that company, a mid-level exec brought a couple of pistols to work to clean on his lunch break prior to going shooting after work with friends. Some visiting customers came upon him doing so in the break room, and completely freaked out. The handbook was amended that afternoon.
I was recently fired from a company. My old boss just contacted me asking work-related questions. Should I respond?
This has happened to me previously. I was the office manager/IT administrator for a husband/wife company. When I went to work for them, we had bonuses if certain productivity goals were met. This was in the “employee handbook” that was given to me when I signed my contract for employment. (They insisted upon having us listed as contractors and not employees)A year or so later, the husband and wife started going through a divorce. They each took it out on the employees and it wasn’t a pleasant experience. One day I received a call from a friend telling me that he was just fired by the husband because his wife hired him originally and he questioned his loyalty. He reminded me that I was also hired by the wife so it was just a matter of time until I was let go. I thanked my friend and told him to feel free to use me as a reference when he applied to such and such company. Brian said he hadn’t even thought about whom he was going to go work for yet so why was I suggesting that company. I said my best friend is one of the managers in the company and would hire him on the spot if he used me a reference. The next day Brian applied for a job there and called to tell me that before the interview was over he was offered the job.About a week later, I met the metrics needed to get 3 different bonuses. I sent an email to the owner telling him about the metrics and how I had earned the bonus as described in the handbook. The owner said that I didn’t meet the required metrics and therefore I wouldn’t get any bonus. I pointed him to the handbook and told him what page had the metrics. This proved that I had earned the bonus and asked when I would be able to get the check. The next day, the owner came in with someone I didn’t know and went into the office. I knew something was up just by their demeanor. A few minutes later the new guy walked up to me and said I was being let go. They asked for my access badge and cryptocards. I gave them and left.A couple of days later, I get a call from the owner. He told me that he cannot get into the server and needed an admin to let him in. I pointed out to him that I no longer work for the company and I wanted my earned bonuses otherwise he can forget about it. He hemmed and hawed but finally gave in. They told me to come in right away and they would write me a check for what I was owed. When I walked in, the owner took me to the server room where I immediately reset his password and asked for my check. The owner laughed at me and said that he wasn’t going to give me anything for 5 minutes of work and that I was to leave the premises immediately otherwise he would call security and have them escort me out.Oh, I was pissed. As I was walking out, I tossed the piece of paper with the new administrator password on it into the drop slot of the safe by the front door. I wasn’t doing anything unethical or illegal; I left the paper at the office and in a secure location which was required to be done according to the employee handbook.About a month later, Jeff called me in a panic. He stated that he was locked out of the server and needed the admin account password. I told him that it was locked in the safe like we were supposed to do and that he just needed to open it and get the password. He asked whom had the combination because he wasn’t given it. I told him that Kevin (the owner) had the combination.Later that day, Kevin called me again demanding that I give him the combination to the safe. I told him that I do not work for him, that if he wanted me to come in and unlock the safe that it would cost him the amount of money I was owed for the bonuses I rightfully earned AND $50 a hour with a 4 hour minimum. He started to scream at me and I hung up on him after I told him I wouldn’t take any more of his abuse. The next morning, a former coworker told me he heard Jeff and Kevin say that they would tell me that they would pay me the money I was owed but immediately contact the bank to stop payment on the check as I walked out the door. I thanked her and said I appreciated her watching my back. She told me that she felt that ethically she had no choice but to tell me due to their unethical plans.About 15 minutes later I received a call from Jeff. He told me that they would play me the bonuses but not the 4 hour minimum charge. When I told him that wasn’t satisfactory and that I wouldn’t come in without the additional consultant pay, he said he would have to talk to Kevin about it and get back to me.30 minutes later, Kevin called me and said he would have a check for $5200 waiting at the front desk when I came in (bonuses and the consultant fees). This is when I struck. I told him I wanted it to be a cashier’s check because the last check I got from him bounced and wanted to be sure that he didn’t stiff me again. This put him into orbit with anger, demanding I come in right then and accept the check as is. I told him that I didn’t trust him at all and that I would only do the work with a cashier’s check. He started screaming at me and I hung up on him - again telling him that I wouldn’t take his abuse again.2 hours later, I get another call from the now ex-wife. She wanted to know why I was being so difficult with Kevin about giving him a combination to the safe. When I told her how he shafted me on the bonuses and the pay I was promised before, she was in shock. It turned out that Kevin had given himself the bonuses instead of to me. Sharon said she would get to the bottom of this issue and get back to me ASAP.The next morning, Sharon called me back. She said that Kevin would have a cashier’s check at the desk that he was supposed to give to me before I opened the safe. She also told me to make sure that he gave me the check before I did anything because she suspected he would play games with saying that he had to go get the check and/or that it would be mailed to me, etc. I thanked her and hung up.When I arrived at the offices, Kevin was on hand and all smiles. He was extremely nice as he walked me into the building and took me to the safe. He asked me to open the safe and then he would pay me all the money I was owed. This is when I told him that I was supposed to get the check before I did anything. He became angry and started being condescending to me. I started to walk out and leave the office. When I got to the main doors to the building to go out, Security was there and wouldn’t let me leave. I pulled out my cell phone and told them I was going to call the police because of their actions. That was when I had a hand on my shoulder and spun around. Kevin shoved the check into my hand and yelled at me to go open the safe. I told him to never touch me again otherwise I would defend myself, looked at the check and verified the amount and that it was a cashier’s check. I then returned to the safe. I entered the combination, open the door wide and pointed to the slip of paper with the admin account password written on it and told him that the other important paperwork was below it. He told me to leave and never come back. He never asked for the combination. Stupid person, right?I got a call from Sharon later that afternoon and she said Kevin told her that I opened the safe but didn’t give him the combination to it; that I old showed him the admin password and walked out. I asked her if he told her what the admin password was. No, he didn’t. I said that it was “Kevin!s@n@$$h07e”. She laughed out loud and asked me nicely for the combination of the safe. I told her. She couldn’t believe it was something so simple yet wasn’t surprised he didn’t remember it. He set the combination shortly after they were married and the combination was the date of their wedding.EDIT: Thank you for all the upvotes! I appreciate it. Things worked out for me in the end but it wasn’t a pleasant experience.
What office rule made you say "You gotta be kidding me"?
They said “996” is a blessing. The rules that can be listed in the employee handbook are not stupid. But the underlying rules are really disgusting. When I applied for an Internet company, hr told me vaguely that they were a fast-growing company and were in the golden stage of development. So they usually work overtime until 9 o'clock, and they have to work on Saturdays. ? ? ? You must be kidding me.This is not written in the contract, but "everyone volunteers to work overtime". You can guess if everyone is voluntary. In other words, this is another form of compulsion. You may not get or just get very little overtime pay. If you go home when everyone is working overtime, you may become a "unique landscape", and your superiors will think that you are not serious about your work.“996”refers to those who put in 12-hour days — 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. — six days a week.In 2019, the 996.icu project was spread on Github, which means you stick to 996 rules when you work and live in ICU when you are sick. (It is an exaggeration, but it has the effect of highlighting emotions. It satirizes entrepreneurs who are blindly seeking to extend employees' working hours. )Some entrepreneurs say that 996 is good fortune, and by this way those who work longer can get more rewards. But this return is too vain. It refers more to the employee’s hard work being discovered by the superiors, the possibility of promotion and salary increase, or the improvement of personal ability. To be honest, 996 is a squeeze on employees. It is not a reward for employees, but for the company. In addition, the act of increasing the working hours of employees ignores the rights of employees and violates the law.Entrepreneurs associate hard work with long working hours, and think that not working longer means not working hard, which is a symbol of not having an active life. It seems like a selfish lie.The time after work should be spent on rest, entertainment and learning other interesting knowledge, rather than still working for the company. We should spend more time with the people we love instead of colleagues and computers.
