How serious is the 2019–20 Coronavirus?

I flew back to Shenzhen yesterday-my wife and I were on vacation for the past week or so in Cambodia and then Malaysia. It’s been an interesting week, to say the least. The virus originated from a “wet market” in Wuhan, with the first case appearing in early December, apparently from a “bat soup”.Not my cup of tea, and yes I am judging them-why the fuck would someone eat a bat? Markets like these are generally unsanitary and should have been shut down years ago.EDIT 2/7/2020: Not bat soup. Still shouldn’t be eating that.Wuhan also has China’s only level 4 biosafety lab.“Within the framework of the Sino-French Cooperation Agreement on Emerging Infectious Diseases Prevention and Control, signed in October 2004, China constructed its first BSL-4 laboratory in 2015 in Wuhan. “But, I’m sure that had nothing to do with this. Right?China is a very strange mix of backwards and futuristic.Washing hands is not common knowledge. People still spit on the ground-even indoors. Coughing or sneezing without covering their mouths is also very common.EDIT 2/7/2020: Got called a racist for this. Not so, amigos. I can make observations about a place without it coming from a place of hate, or based on race. I’ve lived in Shenzhen for 8 years and have a lot of friends here, both foreign and local. It’s a big problem-getting better, but still a big issue. I have-without exaggeration-seen hundreds of babies poop in public. It’s very common, the grandparents just lift them up and then out it goes…There is a lack of basic education regarding what causes and transmits disease-a lot of mythology and bullshit being spouted. Yet this is a world leader in AI, robotics, blockchain, and almost any other high technology field imaginable, and will no doubt eventually be the biggest economic power in the world. This disease is fairly serious, for a few reasons. The disease can be passed from human to human. (EDIT 2/7/2020 confirmed)It has an incubation period of almost two weeks. (EDIT 2/7/2020 confirmed)The disease can be passed on by those without symptoms-and it’s spreading very quickly. (EDIT 2/7/2020 confirmed)While having a much lower mortality rate compared to MERS or SARS, just .1–2% or so, it’s still killing people off. Most are older and many have preexisting conditions, but a life is a life. This is right around the time of the biggest human migration in history-a billion or so people all going back home and then returning. It’s the worst possible timing. The population density of China is very high.Viruses mutate, and with it spreading this quickly, if a more virulent strain with a 30–35% mortality rate like MERS comes about…this will get very messy. The government, understandably, is responding very actively. We had to fill out forms when landing from Malaysia that we hadn’t been to Wuhan (武汉) in the past two weeks, nor did we have any symptoms. People who had been to Wuhan on the plane were taken for further medical examination.Right now, all of Wuhan and most cities in Hubei (湖北)province are roadblocked and quarantined-a total of about 50 million people, or roughly the total population of England cannot depart their city. My wife’s friend is in Wuhan, and she told my wife that they are “等死“-waiting to die. While this is a tad dramatic, I think it’s not uncommon of a feeling. Our temperatures are taken every time we enter our community. It’s a ghost town-several thousand people live here, and almost no one to be seen.Right now, wearing a mask is mandatory in public places here in Guangdong province. However, they are sold out across the country, and many people are improvising:All schools and training centers cannot reopen until later in February. All restaurants in the country are closed-or at least the bigger ones. All movies in theaters in the country have been cancelled-though they did give free downloads on Tencent Movies for those at home to make up for it.EDIT 2/7/2020 It was apparently just one movie. Anyway, I think the government is doing a great job here. This type of effort in controlling an outbreak is, quite literally, historically unprecedented. They’ve had some hard decisions to make, but made the right ones quickly and efficiently. The disease is still spreading, but this would have been much worse. This situation is evolving hour by hour and day by day. As of right now, it looks to be serious, and the government regulations are equally so. I have no doubt that they will win the fight, but the total cost remains to be seen.Follow me on Instagram or YouTube for diet and training tips!

How did your marriage end?

I was really young and naive when I met and married Prince Charming. I was 19 and in college and Prince Charming was 29 and still living at home with his parents (Red Flag #1).I should have known there was something wrong when he waited until the last minute to tell his parents we were getting married (Red Flag #2).Sadly, I still married him - even after I found out that he had a weird obsession with his mother (Red Flag #3).And I stayed married to him even after:him not paying the bills, calling his mom five times a day, telling me my family was trash, forcing us to move back in with his parents (3 times in 7 years),pushing me into a closest when I was 9 months pregnant, and telling me that he really wanted to sleep with my cousin.Even his parents thought I was trash because I came from a Working Class family. But I was going to stay married no matter what - because I didn't believe in divorce. Well, apparently I was the only one who thought that way. Even after he told me over and over divorce was not an option to him. (Yeah, he was really good at lying.)After my mother was killed in a car accident, the emotional abuse and gaslighting got worse. I felt like I was I was going crazy and had lost the only person I could turn to. I couldn't take care of my daughters. I was severely depressed and had turned to pills to numb the pain. It got to the point where I couldn't work or go to school because of mental and physical health reasons. I was totally dependent on his income.Well surprise! He wrote bad checks and had got our bank account closed (again). He stop paying the bills because gas, cigarettes, and his wants were more important. We were getting evicted (again) and this time I put my foot down. We were not moving back in with his parents! I wanted to live within our means and he ABSOLUTELY had to live in the richest neighborhood. So he pretended to rent a house. He even gave the person a small deposit in front of me and made plans to move our furniture out of storage. When moving day came, we droped our kids off at his parents and I was to wait at my aunt's house til he got off work (Big Red Flag). When the time for him to get off work came and went - I called him. I asked him why he was not on his way. His exact words were, “I want a divorce!”I said, “You can't take the kids from me!”And he goes, ”Watch me!”So yup, my marriage ended with a phone call. I was left with my old car and a few items I could get in my car. I had to beg my Aunt for a place to stay and she let me sleep on her couch.I tried to get Legal Aid, but my conniving ex-husband went and filed for Legal Aid first. He got approved before any of this happened. So when I went to them for help they told me ‘it would be a conflict of interest for them to represent me' and ‘since you had no way to pay, you wouldn't get approved anyways'. And the real kicker - his parents ended up paying for his lawyer. He never used the Legal Aid lawyer and I couldn't use them because of his application.I had to fight my divorce on my own and without any legal knowledge. I was spending lots of hours in the legal library looking up forms that I needed to fill out. (This was before they closed it off to the public).I had to fight to get overnight visitation. They tried to get just a few hours a day because I lived in a “bad and unsafe” area. But the judge laughed at them and said “I can not declare the whole city of Kansas City, Kansas as unsafe” and gave me the basic visitation schedule. In the end, I settled with him in court and gave him custody. In return, he didn't ask for child support. I did it because I had to start my life over and I had no support system to help me. My two older girls ended up the real losers of this divorce. They didn't get to see me much over the years because of the agreement. They were 2 and 4 when I was cut out of thier lives and now at 16 and 14 they want nothing to do with me and I don't blame them. This divorce has been a blessing in disguise. It was a huge wake-up call. I learned how to identity Red Flags in a relationship and how to take care of myself. As of today, I have been happily married to my current husband for 11+ years and we have two children together. I have gotten my life together and look forward to seeing my older girls someday.

Is it always worth it to do a Fulbright?

This question also strongly depends on which type of Fulbright Scholarship you are talking about. There is also the Fulbright programme that brings students from outside the USA to do masters/PhDs at US universities. This programme seems to run in quite in a few countries - everywhere from Brazil to Pakistan. In terms of this specific Fulbright Programme, it has some serious cons, most notably:You have to apply over one a half years before your planned start date in the US. This gives Fulbright time to take complete control over your application.Once you get accepted, you are not allowed to contact any US universities or staff directly.Fulbright will send your application to an organisation called IIE that fill out application forms to US universities (you have no information on how they do this, what they do if you didn't initially provide them with for example a specific essay one university needs). They never contact you for more details, they never even tell you when they are applying. You then have to wait until some undefined date to find out where you were placed, and you're not allowed to go anywhere else - you either drop out of the programme of go there. You must return to your home country for 2 years after your complete your studies. When applying, I felt as if I was misled, because I was assured that they would send my application to good universities. In the end, when IIE got my application, it was sent to universities that were not stronger than my undergraduate school. I also had to really push just to find out where my application was being sent. You can tell them I want to go to 4 universities, and they won't even email you to say 'sorry we're going to place you elsewhere'. My application wasn't sent to any of my five choices! This happens because Fulbright actually doesn't have relationships with most top schools, so there is no opportunity for funding there. They won't tell you that at the start though, or warn you in any way. You have then also signed an agreement preventing you from talking to any US universities, so you won't apply to any of those other schools you actually want to go to.In my case, they even went as far to say that my profile was not strong enough to get accepted to my top choices. I decided to apply to those schools independently and was accepted with funding to some of them, including my top choice! It seemed clear that at least for the Fulbright programme from my country, IIE and even the local Fulbright body did not think very highly of the students they were placing and do project the attitude of 'we are giving you anything, do what we say'. This may be different for other countries but I don't think so - the placement and funding works in the same manner in other countries, and you have this wall between IIE and the universities you want to study at for the entire process.Overall if you are from outside the US and applying for a PhD in the states, I would say apply for Fulbright only if you have time and once you get accepted can push them to find out where they are sending your application, and then apply to other schools independently. You don't need Fulbright to get funding for a PhD. Even for a masters there are some programmes that offer funding. It is essential to have a backup plan if you want to 'do this scholarship'.
