PDF Editor FAQ

Is Canada safer to live than America?

There are many different kinds of safety. There’s financial safety. Health safety. Safety from wild animals. Safety from violence (wild humans?). Safety from the elements. Etc.Financial:In Canada there’s almost no worry about going bankrupt from medical bills. It’s a common problem in the US. Canada = safer.Lose your job? Canada’s social safety net is there for you and not under constant threat of being jerked out by Republicans. If you lose your job you still have health insurance. Canada = saferThere can be economic downturns in Canada just as in the US, but at least banks and real estate are regulated so that there isn’t the same risk of losing everything because somebody else screwed up (or got greedy). The stock market is by nature risky so is in a different playing field. Canada = saferHealth:The standard of medical care in Canada is every bit as good as it is in the US. Most doctors in Canada have cross-border certification and many have trained in the US so there’s no difference in medical competence. The stories of masses of Canadians dying because of wait times are just that - stories - meant to frighten Republicans into voting against universal health care (therefore less profit to the rich insurance companies). But general health is better in Canada because we have no fear of big bills for routine checkups and procedures. Canada = safer.Wild animals:If you go up north there may be a chance of being attacked by polar bears. It’s pretty rare though. The US has a lot more rattlesnakes, scorpions, mountain lions etc. in certain areas, but not usually a problem. Close but Canada still safer.Sharks aren’t really a problem in Canada. Of course partially that’s because the water’s too cold for humans in all but a few, non-shark-infested areas. But sharks are often seen off Hawaii, Florida and the South and Gulf states. Canada = saferViolent crime:The stats are readily available so I’m not going to repeat them here, but there’s no comparison. Gun violence does happen in Canada (it’s hard to stop all the gun smuggling from the US) but it’s a fraction of what it is in the US. If the US was so safe then why do Americans feel the need to carry deadly weapons to protect themselves? Canada = significantly safer.Elements:Canada has snow and cold weather in the winter. Yet the closest I ever came to freezing to death was in Wisconsin one February. The climate varies greatly across the US but there are parts that get much colder than most of the populated parts of Canada. Canada = safer. While both the US and Canada can get tornadoes they’re not as big or as common in Canada. Very few people are ever killed by tornadoes here but it happens frequently in some parts of the US. Canada = safer.Earthquakes can happen in both countries but I don’t remember ever hearing of somebody killed by an earthquake in Canada. Not so the US. Canada = safer.By the time hurricanes get up to Canada they pretty much blow themselves out. I remember Hurricane Hazel, the worst one ever to hit Canada. Severe rain but not nearly what it was in the US. Canada = much saferInternational travel:I’ve heard of Americans getting covers for their passports to make them look like Canadian passports in case they get kidnapped or hijacked. Hmmm. I wonder why? Canada = saferOf course there are more parameters but the above covers the vast majority of people in both countries. In most Canada is either safer or much safer than the US. Even in the worst cases Canada is no worse than a break even.If you want to be safe, the choice between Canada and the US is very clear.

We have received PR for Canada and are excited, but now also fully aware of the big transition we're about to embark on. What do you love most about Canada and other immigrants and how did you handle the transition?

Congratulations, like any other major change in life it is going to be one though it depends a lot upon your individual situation, skill set, amount of effort you put in to integrate and available resources. To a certain extent, i won’t consider myself an immigrant. The reason is that i didn’t come here with my own life long plan / dream. I just came as a result of a job offer and settled. So i didn’t have to worry about initial concerns of settlement. Some points i would want to make (some might be contradictory) to others.Although Canadian employers look for local experience as a preference, that is mostly because of likelihood to more easily settle and perform in the same market. If you are really good at a particular skill / education area etc. you should be able to make room for yourself.Still the initial process is slow and takes a while to settle so maximize the contingency funds etc. as much as possible.DO NOT forget to buy a good private healthcare insurance BEFORE landing, no matter what (unless you are landing in a province which covers you from day one such as Alberta. Even then having travel insurance for the first few days is better). That shouldn’t be difficult to do with many Canadian providers. You can compare and choose it here. Health Insurance Canada for Visitors and Canadians OnlineSpend time understanding health care, taxes, mortgages, insurances etc. upfront. That would help you a lot to settle here.Unless you are coming from a really cold country, try not to buy winter stuff from there. Most of it would be useless for majority of the country (Canada). Instead you can always find reasonable stuff from walmart in your first year. It would not be very expensive and would still be useful for a good season, possibly two.Depending upon your profession / field of study, consider getting a local certification / short course in the beginning to ensure you understand and are fully up to date with how that particular domain is practiced in Canada.SAD might be very real for people who are not used to of winters and have been used to of living in big cities / close to family etc. If possible, come here in the start of summer. The bigger the city, the more expensive it is, but also there might be more opportunities and acceptance towards multicultural people / immigrants.

What should governments do to prepare for the technological automation of human jobs?

We know that the job market is changing, and instead of resisting in vain, we’re focused on funding research and innovation, like in AI and quantum computing, that’ll help lead the change here in Canada. And while we do that, we’re preparing Canadians to find good jobs through investments in education and training. In Budget 2017, the Government of Canada brought in our Innovation and Skills Plan, which focuses on people and addresses the changing nature of the economy to ensure it works for all Canadians. The plan will build Canada as a world-leading innovation economy to create jobs and grow the middle class. To help more unemployed Canadians get the training they need to get a good, well-paying job, our Government proposes to make better use of existing flexibilities within the Employment Insurance program that allow claimants to pursue self-funded training and maintain their EI status. For unemployed workers receiving EI, this will mean that they can return to school to get the training they need to find a new job—without fear of losing the EI benefits they need to support themselves and their families. This will provide greater security to Canadian families at a time when they need help most.Budget 2017 proposes to provide $132.4 million over four years, beginning next year, and $37.9 million per year thereafter, to allow unemployed Canadians to pursue self-funded training while receiving Employment Insurance benefits. If you’re looking to go back to school, boost your skills or get a new certification, we’re expanding access to grants and access to interest-free student loans for adults. To make post-secondary education more affordable for adult learners with dependent children, our Government also intends to expand eligibility for Canada Student Grants for students who want to go back part-time while they work and students with dependent children, starting in the 2018–19 academic year. And we’re going to invest in 13000 work-integrated learning placements for students to help young Canadians transition from school to work.
