PDF Editor FAQ

What’s the strangest thing a car salesman has said to you during negotiation?

“You don’t want a test drive?”.My company car was coming off lease soon (a Renault Megane Series 1, 1.4 engine) and I was changing jobs and not getting a replacement. I’d been looking for a “new” car (6–18 month old, low mileage ideally ex-demo: best bits of new without getting slugged with the new depreciation). Very little in the market that I was afterI walked into the Renault dealers who serviced my company car around 430pm on a Saturday close to xmas. I told the salesman what I was after and during the chat I mentioned what I had already. He pointed out 2 on the list - a Y-reg ex-demo (UK cars had letter as the registration “year” - actually 6 month period) or an V -reg. The Y-reg had the better 1.6 engine; the V-reg had the awful 1.4 that my car did and generally better spec (it was the “sport” version which meant some desirable extras, some that I didn’t care about either way!). The price was reasonable too, so we walked out to the Y-reg, passing my company car. I looked over it and said that I’d put a deposit on it now. Then he asked “You don’t want a test drive?” - I said: “Not now - its 530pm, we’re both looking forward to dinner and its dark. You’ve seen what I drive, so I know its handling and that it will generally be better. But I’ll put a condition of sale on that I have an acceptance drive before paying it”.And yes, lovely car to drive until I sold it when I emigrated a few years later.Main dealers in the UK are pretty straight - unlike used dealers (Arthur Daly!)

How do you evaluate a used car?

I would usually follow the same procedure on all used vehicles that I appraised.Walk carefully around the complete vehicle looking for signs of damage, wear, poor body repair. Inspect the windshield, headlights and taillights, tires, grille. lower valance.Inspect inside of the vehicle. general condition of upholstery and interior panels.Start the vehicle. Check all feature functions, A/C, power windows, locks, mirrors, seats, sunroof, etc. While the vehicle is running, open the hood and check for signs of fluid leaks, abnormal engine sounds, also sheetmetal edges for indication of a repaint. Finally, a test drive, which would include listening for abnormal powertrain sounds, checking brakes for pulsation, 4X4 operation if applies, testing cruise control, and making note of any suspension issues. After the physical evaluation, I would calculate the approximate costs required to recondition the vehicle, check comparable online listings, recent sales at dealer auctions for similar models, and finally Black Book values. With this information I would then average out an appraised value. The challenge of course, was to try to be as accurate and fair as possible, and do all of the above in 20 minutes or less on a busy Saturday afternoon.

Why won't Europe return the artifacts they stole from the nations they colonized?

They generally don’t regard them as stolen.During the colonial era, there were no laws governing antiquities. Buying an old figurine somebody had dug up or digging things up yourself and taking them back to London or Paris or whatever was, bluntly, legal in most cases. Or, at the very least, there’s sufficiently little information about provenance and the conditions of sale to prove that such items weren’t obtained legally at the time.So for a great many items in a great many museums, it would be all kinds of illegal to sell and import them now, and the legal conditions prevailing then were a consequence of massive power imbalances and colonial occupations which are morally questionable and would be unsupportable these days. However, by construing the word “stolen” very narrowly to mean something which could be proven to be stolen in a court of law, they can get away with regarding them that way.
