Which test series for Mains you will recommend for a novice, which can help in answer writing and evaluation is good?
Mains test series is very helpful in judging our preparedness for mains. There are many coaching institute which offer test series , some of them are good. But all test series fail to serve a sincere students need ,which is evaluation by a faculty. I would like to give genuine and honest review of all test series.Drawbacks of mains test series in marketThey are mostly evaluated by student who themselves have failed to clear prelims. No one who qualifies prelims will take up a job of answer evaluation. So quality of evaluation below par. These students just blindly follow the sample answer provided to them . They lack depth of knowledge to really give an honest feedback. They fail to appreciate individual strength and weakness of each candidates. As it is done on mass scale.Quality of questions also is poor in many mains test series. Many places when a student opts for online test, delay in evaluation is a big concern. Many a times student feels cheated as even after wasting loads of money no improvement is there in their answer writing .The basic problem is most institute want to maximise their profit without worrying about the quality of evaluation. Some test series the coaching shamelessly say that it will not be evaluated by sir. Then also fools join it and waste their money .Their is no accountability atoll in test series. Koi jawabdehi nahi..they feel they do ehsaan on student by evaluating these copies. There are few good things also about fewQuestions of vision and VajiRam are of good quality.Learning -Better to do answer writing under guidance of an experienced faculty and mentor who has qualified mains multiple times and know what UPSC expects . This would give info individualised feedback.I have innovated and developed a uniques answer writing skills enhancement program based on my experience. I only help selected and deserving student's as I can't give individual feedback to a large number of students. It works on individualised question answer feedback . It tracks your progress with each answer. It makes sure you have covered entire syllabus. It's basically a personal teacher for every student .
Are the "Teacher Evaluation Forms" given at the end of every semester in IITs for students to anonymously assess the performance of the professor really effective?
Yes, some professors do take it seriously. Prof. Jagadish Kumar of IIT-D electrical engineering department collects the feedback forms, puts them in an envelope, seals them in front of the entire class and asks one representative from the students. He would open the seal after the examinations are over and results are out in the presence of the representative so that it's clear he's not biased by feedback. He told us in the 90s when he began teaching he got largely negative feedback and corrected himself. Today he is one of the most respected professors.
