Here’s why it may seem like teachers scrutinize students with learning disabilities:The U.S. government requires certain documentation regarding students with disabilities. Teachers must meet (at least) annually to discuss accommodations and modifications for students who have Individualized Education Plans. These plans must be documented for, and followed by, everyone who teaches the student. Data must be collected, analyzed, and reported at the county and state levels and documented in case of a federal audit. This data is collected and analyzed to ensure these students are making progress and receiving the required protections under IDEA and ESSA.Students with disabilities have their own category under CCRPI, AYP, and other evaluative measures. In my district, students with disabilities can have a significant impact on our CCRPI scores—the evaluation measure that determines whether or not a school is “succeeding” or “failing,” so there are many measures in place to support students with disabilities in particular.Based on the disability, they might need closer monitoring. Students who are diagnosed with severe autism or emotional/behavioral disorders require additional supervision to ensure they don’t get overstimulated, injured, or pose a danger to themselves or others. These students may have paraprofessional assistance, or be served in smaller classrooms providing a lower student to teacher ratio.Hopefully teachers are sensitive to the needs of the students and aren’t needlessly nitpicking or scrutinizing them, but it is possible that a student or parent might feel a student is being scrutinized simply because the requirements to meet the needs of these students is slightly different.

That’s my area.I’m happy to hear suggestions from paraprofessionals, especially ones that are really good and really experienced, but the decision whether to implement their advice is always mine.

Non-medical applications for $100K on children are not unusual.There are two kinds of medical exams: one by a trained paraprofessional and one by a medical doctor. Both the paraprofessional and doctor take a health history, pulse, height, weight, blood pressure and urine sample. Where they differ is the medical doctor will use stethoscope to evaluate heart and lungs for large face amounts, usually over $500k. Sometimes ECG is required for high face amounts on older applicants.Not only does underwriting a life insurance policy take into consideration a person’s health, it also looks at financial health, occupation, credit rating and life style.Underwriting is a science but it is also an art.
