I lived in Santa Rosa when it had ten thousand people. It was a small town, we walked downtown to the library, and to the city pool for swim lessons. It grew as I did, but when I moved away from Santa Rosa in 1968 it was much bigger, although I don’t have any idea what the population was then. In 1950 it was about ten thousand. In those days, Montgomery Village was far out, and we seldom went there. All the elementary schools fed into Santa Rosa Jr. High, and Santa Rosa High School, too. Montgomery High School was being built my last year of high school. The sophomore class was on double session with us. They began as juniors at Montgomery the following year.We took horseback riding lessons at Cloverleaf Ranch, and it was way north, out in the country. Rincon Valley was out in the country too.I have fond memories of growing up in Santa Rosa. I remember when St. Eugene’s was built. My parents thought there wouldn’t ever be enough people to have aros full service there, as it was just too far. After I was married, we belonged to Holy Spirit, which met in a tiny clubhouse once owned by a sportscar club.When I go back there, nostalgia is strong. But the little town is now a big city, and it is very different.
