The M.Stat. course at ISI Kolkata (or indeed, any regular degree course at any ISI centre) has no tuition fees. When I joined B.Stat. in 2014, the one time “expenses” were the refundable library deposit (Rs.2000/-), hostel deposit(Rs.605/-) and the mess deposit(Rs.1500/-) - the last is submitted to the student mess conveners and is unfortunately refundable only in name for all practical purposes. Mess fees averaged around Rs.2000/- per month if you took 2 meals a day and were a non-vegetarian. These expenses remain much the same, except the mess costs, which has gone up now (for various reasons) to about Rs.5000/- for similar eating habits. If you are a vegetarian (or forego the costlier food items) you might be able to make do with around Rs.3000 - 4000 per month or even less. While there are many cheap eateries in the locality, I wouldn’t suggest any of them as a long term alternative. Cooking in your room is not officially allowed (actually the ban is on having cooking stoves/induction ovens/heaters in your room) - but I don’t see this rule being enforced in my lifetime. Hostel rent has gone up to Rs.300/- pm from Rs.50/- pm.The M.Stat. students get a stipend of Rs.5000/- pm (Rs.3000/- pm for B.Stat). I don’t see these amounts changing for the next 5–10 years. This stipend cannot be availed in conjunction with any other government or private scholarship (Inspire/KVPY, etc.) - you have to forego one, presumably the lesser. The annual contingency grant (which is released on receipt of cash memos for purchase of prescribed textbooks only which has to be verified by the faculty member acting as the “class teacher”) is the same amount per year (and may be received in conjunction with other scholarships). Prize money (Rs.1000–2000) is awarded every semester to outstanding students, which again may be received in conjunction with other scholarships/fellowships and is released on receipt of cash memo for the purchase of any book. However, planning to survive solely on stipend is difficult as you may have many unplanned expenses - as such, some financial support from parents -say Rs.10–12 k pa, is required. You can offset that by teaching school students - tuition opportunities are dime a dozen at the hostel with many aspirants eager to learn from those who have cracked the exam and got into their dream institute. For anybody whose family’s financial status is lower middle class or higher though, these expenses are not very significant (as long as aforesaid person doesn’t suddenly change his/her spending habits under peer pressure). Keep in mind that the stipends are contingent upon decent academic performance (60%, no uncleared backpapers) and attendance (officially 75%, but they probably don’t stop stipend for anything over 60%).

I teach in California. I wear sandals, slides and flip-flops all the time. Sometimes, it is easier to take off my shoes. I teach kindergarten. I do not sit at my desk very often. My classroom is carpeted. No one cares or notices if I take off my shoes. My principal has seen this. I would be required to put on shoes in the halls and outside.I have a friend who teaches in another grade. She takes off her shoes. Her students are allowed to take off their shoes during class. This is just a normal part of her class.Teachers dress casually. Jeans are worn daily by most the staff. Teachers wear shorts during warm months. I have taught in my district for over 20 years. I have never seen a memo for teacher dress code.

Gift giving culture is not very strong in Hong Kong, and most businesses in Hong Kong tend to frown on giving or receiving gifts because gift giving has a mild connotation of bribery and corruption. This is particularly the case when starting a business relationship.For that matter, gift giving in the Pearl River Delta is much less strong than in other Chinese cultural areas. Every Chinese New Year, my wife is very conflicted, because she comes from Taiwan where it is customary for teachers to get red packets at Chinese New Year, and in Hong Kong, those gifts are pretty strictly forbidden.Give the attorney a great business deal, and pay your bills on time, and that will be enough.If you have to give a gift, then give food. The nice thing about food is that it spoils so that the person can't refuse, and there is a limit to how expensive you can make food. If you are from Miami, give him a bag of oranges, and take advantage of the fact that Hong Kong doesn't restrict food imports.I worked in a bank in Hong Kong and ever year around New Year, we got this long memo about what gifts we were allowed to receive or not. There was a specific section on gifts of food, which we were allowed to receive provided we share the food with everyone in the office.
