My advisor is relatively young, got his tenure about a year ago. On any normal day, in an hour long meeting, his desktop notifications for emails buzzes at least 10-15 times if not more. He is advising about 6-8 graduate students, some more undergraduate students and teaching a class of about 190 students. Plus, he probably gets mass emails that the department office sends out for notifications on thesis defense, outages etc. Emails from the journals he is publishing at, conferences sessions he is chairing, project managers at funding agencies, faculty meetings and responsibilities, etc. etc. So, to sum it up, professors get a ton of email and they might read most of them but may not be able to reply to them even if they want to.My professor once told me, that if I dont get a reply to an email within a day, it is likely that I wont get a reply from him. Here are a few suggestions:1) Most of the professors are very polite and they remember everything. Send them a second email on the same thread as a polite reminder to reply.2)Send the email at an odd hour, i.e, early in the morning or right after 5,and not during conventional work hours when there are tons of emails from department and journal offices.3)Try to contact their graduate students (they are listed on the website) and find out any basic information you need about the research and ask them what would be the best way to get in contact with the professor.4)If it is possible for you to visit the campus, try to stop by their office when they have office hours for their class and there are no students asking questions.5)Try your luck by knocking at their door. Although some professors may not like it, most are polite and courteous enough to talk to your for a couple of minutes or tell that it is not a good time to talk.
