PDF Editor FAQ

What is the most disturbing thing a teacher has done in class?

Well, sister Agnes definitely stayed in my mind. I don't remember what one student had done but what I do recall vividly is the vision of Sister Agnes in her habit running around the room chasing after my classmate in first grade. After a few times around she finally caught the student, grabbed her and punished her by sticking her under her teacher desk for a good amount of time.Below isn't my story but my oldest sister’s. This really was disturbing:My folks were bilingual and chose to teach my oldest sister Spanish only, determining she would learn English when she started school in the 1950s. Catholic school. What my sister found out very early is that any time you spoke Spanish in the classroom you would get whacked with a wooden ruler. So through fear she learned to remain quiet until she could learn English quickly. She was not the only one who had this experience. I think that is why a lot of older Hispanics born and raised in San Antonio's Catholic school system do not speak Spanish outside of the home. They were taught at a very early age not to do so. Also as a result, my folks decided not to actively teach the rest of us Spanish when we were really young. Times have definitely changed!!Recent AP article about this common treatmentAP

Which tier of colleges would be interested in a student with a 32 ACT, a 4.0 GPA, and valedictorian honors in a small 1A catholic high school?

If you are good enough to run cross-country at the NCAA D-3 level, then check colleges in the NESCAC NESCAC like Tufts, Williams, Amherst etc.Or if you don't like the cold, then check Trinity University of TXTrinity University - San Antonio, Texas and the colleges it competes against.The other athletic league would be the UAA UAA That is a wonderful collection of colleges from Chicago to St Louis, to Pittsburgh to Boston, to NYC to Atlanta.Pre-med is wonderful at all of those colleges.NOTE: you stand a Much better chance of being accepted at those colleges, using your Cross Country trump card......{Also consider Kenyon College and the colleges that it competes against.}

What high school did you go to?

9th grade I went to a catholic high school but 10th-12th went to a beautiful public school campus, Thomas Jefferson, in San Antonio. Gorgeous structure. Built in the 1930s through WPA funds with Spanish style architecture throughout, it was voted the 3rd most beautiful campus in the United States by Life magazine. A few Hollywood movies were filmed at this campus. I loved the buildings!Now in the heart of the city, when it was first built, people complained it was out in the boonies. In the yearbooks of those first few years are interesting stories. One stated that students got extra points for shooing the cows away from the campus.
