What does your dad look like?

Here is my Dad with his "#1 son", me, at his holiday party at the ALF in Clearwater, FL. He retired from the Detroit Police Department in 1972 and moved to Clearwater where he has lived ever since. He married my Mom after serving a stint in the Seabees in the Philippines during WWII.

What's a rule your employer implemented that backfired terribly?

I did commercial sign installation and service for 30+ years working for various large companies. I was a journeyman which meant I was on the road a lot. If let's say a large restaurant company Darden wants their new property branded by such and such date we were expected to have it done. No excuses. So we worked on average 75 to 80 hour weeks while on the road.Word came down that there would be no more overtime. That usually meant the guys in the shop did their 8 and went home. But a new manager said it included the install crews. I told him that wasn't going to work. No way no how. I had a crew of 25 guys with a mix of 13 service ladders and crane trucks. We were loaded with 12 new Blockbuster video stores being rebranded in Tallahassee FL. Our shop was in Clearwater FL a good 5 hours away. We were expected to get these 12 stores all done in 5 days, with no OT. So come Friday at noon with 5 locations finished I told the crew load up and let's roll home. Need to be back by 5. And that's what we did. We rolled into the gates with what should have been empty trailers and trucks but half were still loaded up.The owner comes out as I’m getting in my car and asks just what the hell am I doing? I said well we were told zero OT, don't think about doing it or you will not be paid, and that's all we could get done in 40 hours. He blew a gasket. Said he needed that job done by today or it was going to cost thousands in late penalties.Sorry boss, not happening. If you want this stuff done you need to let the guys whom you trust with millions in equipment and tens of thousands in per-diem cash every week run our crews as we see fit. Not have a micromanaging asshole dictating the hours we work to look good on paper. I got a call early Saturday morning asking if I would go back that afternoon. Sure but what about the new zero OT policy? That doesn't apply to the install crews! Please just get it done ASAP! I never saw that manager again.

What is the most bizarre case of road rage you've ever experienced?

I was driving home today. An SUV nearly drove me off the road to get by me but had to stop because the car in the right lane was turning right. He followed behind me and then passed me on the right where there was no lane and nearly push me into oncoming traffic! I called *347and reported him. This man needs his license suspended! He certainly wasn’t in any rush, for he wasn’t honking his horn and waving the drivers in front of him to move over so he could pass! This is his car and I wrote his Tag number in Photoshop. He is a maniac and needs to be STOPPED! CLEARWATER, FL!
