What's the bravest thing you have ever done?

Working during the Ebola Outbreak in 2013–2015 at Sierra Leone. So, it was a normal day full of meetings and discussions. While having lunch we came to know that a one-year-old child who died December 2013 was a case of Ebola in Guinea. The name was new to me. That was neither shocking nor a very happy news to us all expatriates. We thought it was just another disease like Malaria and will be controlled and there was nothing to worry about.Time passed on and slowly Ebola started spreading to the neighbouring country Liberia. Now we were alarmed. And Ebola used to be the hot topic of the day. From safety meetings to production meetings, Ebola used to be on the agenda.I came back home on my rotational roster for two weeks. Things were normal in India, no News channel was covering the Ebola outbreak news and so my family had no clue as to what was happening on the other side of the globe. As usual I packed my bags and left for job in Sierra Leone. Took the same Mumbai-Brussels-Freetown route and reached my site. Had a sound sleep after the jetlag and started my day as usual with meetings.Couple of days later we came to know that due to the porous border of Guinea, SL and Liberia, a couple of cases has been detected in Sierra Leone. That’s when we realised this is for real. It would now take no time for the disease to spread and it’s better to head back home. We were around 200 expatriates in total on the mine site and a few old expats resigned and left for home.I decided not to inform my family and kept mum. But now Ebola was on National TV and my mom called me and told me to head back home. I knew it was a do or die situation. It was a huge risk I was taking by staying back in the country and continue working as if nothing’s gonna happen. But little we knew, that more bad news was coming along. Kenya Airways was the first one to stop it’s flights to Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia. Soon British Airways, KLM Dutch and almost all the airline joined Kenya Airways and stopped flying to SL.The only airline operational was Brussels Airlines. On the company front, the top management knew what we all were facing and took the top most precautions. There was a daily Ebola update, frequent temperature scans, random blood tests for Malaria (since the symptoms were identical to Ebola) and strict adherence to hygiene. The local workforce going on leave were kept in isolation for 21 days after they resumed their jobs and were monitored for their health. We were not allowed to interact with them. People stopped hugging and hand shakes. We were provided with hand sanitisers and almost every checkpoint had a temperature gun. No entering the mess hall without washing your hands. No interaction with outside people. We all were terrified. The more painful part was when you leave site for the airport to go back home. Although a chartered plane was provided, Brussels was a life saver for me since it took a lot less time. We had to first get a clearance from the medical officer on site. On the road, there were around 4 check points were you had to get down and get your temperature checked. At the airport, you had wash your hands with chlorine water and then get a full body thermal scan and get a temperature check again at the boarding point, hoping that your luggage is not touched by a sweaty Sierra Leonean (The main source of infection was bodily fluids like blood, sweat, saliva). After you land in Brussels, they would again check your temperature. The Jet Airways people use to give a special form for us to fill and we were asked to deplane the last. One more check at Mumbai and off you go back to home.In the whole journey, you are half tired and half tensed. Hoping to remain in the acceptable body temperature range. I travelled around 6 times during the outbreak and it’s an experience I will never forget. Every time I think about the road from my mine site to airport, I came across those medical camps where you would see people waiting to see their relatives. All white coloured WHO camps with doctors and medical workers putting their life on the line.It was the largest Ebola outbreak that ever happened and approximately 11000 people lost their lives to this deadly disease. As of 8 May 2016, 28,616 suspected cases and 11,310 deaths were reported. WHO says that the numbers are underestimated. It was indeed one of the most challenging professional phase of my life.West African Ebola virus epidemic - Wikipedia

When you think back to your most productive meetings, what do they have in common?

Great question:a set time limit. Timed meetings with a written agenda, and time listed for each topic. Time limit on talking, and referral to another topic engenders a stop to the discussion, and table for another time.a notice in advance of the meeting and list of expected attendees and accountability for them to attend. This eliminates unnecessary rehashing of the meeting items with those who did not deign to participate.involvement of the highest level of practitioner, in my case, physicians and epidemiologists, and directors: bringing them to the table with a place and time appointed to explain a point of view without judgement causes an amazing exchange of information.ten-group: no more than ten people for one hour, definitely works for safety meetings, outbreak control meetings, review of sepsis etc.

What are the informal powers of the president?

This is a good question because some of a president's most important powers are not mentioned anywhere in the Constitution, but they're very real. I'm not talking about anything shady or illegal, but true power inherent in the office. By vesting the powers of the executive branch in one person, the founders placed a de facto spotlight on that person above all others. Therefore, without taking any official actions, the president can exercise great power, the power to influence, to persuade, to set the national agenda. Here are two biggest informal powers of the president that immediately came to mind when I read this question:The "Bully Pulpit"Teddy Roosevelt coined the phrase that refers to the president's unparalleled ability to speak and be heard. Even if no one agrees with anything the president says, so long as they are president, people will listen. Even if absolutely no one were talking about a particular issue, the president can single handedly make it a topic of conversation in a way no one else can. Journalists from all over the world follow the President of the United States everywhere s/he goes and take note of everything said and done. No matter what Congress, citizens, or foreign leaders think of a president, a president will always have an unrivaled platform to advocate their agenda, day in and day out until they leave office.2. The Power to ConveneIt doesn't matter who you are, when the president comes calling, you answer. Whether it's out of loyalty, civic duty, flattery, favor seeking, or a desire for fame, if the president invites you to a meeting, you're probably going to attend. The president may not be able to get a gun safety bill passed through Congress, but he can get all the stakeholders to meet at the White House. He may not be able to get Republican support for a healthcare bill, but he was able to get them to come discuss ideas and solutions. The President can summon a room full of the wealthiest CEOs, many of whom did not vote for him and even made large contributions to his opponents. Similarly, so long as the United States is held in the kind of esteem it has been for generations, the president can also convene world leaders, as President Obama did when he called for a "Global Summit on Nuclear Security." Taking place in April 2010:The Summit was the largest gathering of heads of state called by a United States president since the 1945 United Nations Conference on International Organization. Delegations from forty-seven governments including the United States attended, thirty-eight of which were represented by heads of state or government. Delegations from the European Union, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and the United Nations also attended. (from Wikipedia)This was yet another demonstration of a president's power to convene. No other official in the U.S. government has this kind of power, and it isn't even an explicit power.

Things don't line up on the lines after multiple uses of templates and its hard to get multi-lines in boxes to respond to touch sensitivity on mobile devices. Also, sometimes ghost characters get superimposed onto templates for no apparent reason. But overall its pretty simple to use and very cheap.
