How did your AIIMS 2019 go?

Note: A bit longer, but I hope this one answers most of the queries in totality.After an average output to a vigorous two years of self-planned preparation (in JEE MAIN and NEET), I had settled for the best medical college of our state with no regrets over my own 'silly' mistakes. AIIMS, however I was never going to skip. I hardly 'prepared' anything after NEET, just some 'skim through' revisions. But I made it a point to attempt as many mock tests as I could on AIIMS pattern, because I never wanted the long standing problem of lack of paper practice to be the problem on yet another day. A soft break of a day or so and I started attempting the mock tests (7+) of Aakash iTutor and few (offline papers) of ALLEN as well. More importantly, I analysed all papers with ample amount of time.Then came 25th May, I had to walk around 5+ Km by foot with a heavy load of books on the back early on the day, as I barely got a car to the test centre (due to some unavoidable circumstances) which was around 60 Km away from home. Anyway, on the exam day, I had made up my mind I would do some GK and Current affairs. Days, Dates, Events, Who's Who, Themes of important dates in 2019, Apps launched by the government ... (and much more) and guess what- all in vain, because I could not find any of these in the paper. I would suggest future aspirants not to prepare for GK because most of these are 'Out of the box' (in one shift they had asked to name 'some' countries in order of their geographic location from West to East). It is better if you prepare for Current Affairs (mostly day-to-day news headlines of past 2+ months) as more than half of GK portion (5+ questions) come from this. For the Static GK, let it be as much you know.Next, comes the attempt of the paper, forget about everything else!I was to appear in the Evening shift of May 25.As my strategy stood, I went like BIOLOGY->GK & LTA->CHEMISTRY->PHYSICS.Biology: It was by and large, NCERT based both MCQ's and A&R's. Yet there were some beyond its scope and yet others needed analytical thinking which most A&R's demand. Yes, a few of those much debated 'A or B? ' were there as well. I almost attempted all but Marked some 4-5 for review, with a three odd left unattempted. Here are a few…1. Chimera is related toAns. rDNA2. In LTA section, there were some of the typical questions from Jee Main mathematics (as far as I remember). As I was also a mathematics student, I didn't face too many problems (as some of my friends communicated their problems). In GK section, more number of questions were from current affairs. Here are a few…1. How many members are nominated by president for Lok Sabha?Ans. 22. Using the digits from the set {1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8}, how many four digit numbers without repetition can be formed with exactly two odd and two even digits?Ans. 8643. In a class, two thirds of students voted for A, one fourth voted for B and one sixth voted for both. If 6 students voted for none, find the total number of students in the class.Ans. 24Chemistry: I almost attempted each of them but may be 2-5 questions unattempted! It was a straightforward paper with Calculative Physical, Memory Based Inorganic and Reaction Mechanism based Organic. I skipped a few in Physical due to exhaustive calculations. As I never studied any NCERT for Chemistry, I am ineligible to declare it to be 'Majoritarily NCERT Based'. I can recall some analytical A&R's were there in this section. I may have Marked some questions for review. Here are a few…1. Which of the following is a combination of least and most ionic compounds respectively?Ans. BeCl2, BaCl22. Correct order of solubility of halogens in water isAns. Br2› Cl2 › I23. Type of linkage in Sucrose isAns. C1 of α- D glucose and C2 of β-D glucose4. Assertion: Zr and Hf have similar radiiReason: They belong to same group5. Assertion: Mercury cells are used in watches, hearing aids and calculatorsReason: Their voltage remains constant because there are no ions in solution whose concentration would changeBefore going to the Physics section, I would love to discuss the biggest mistake (in my personal opinion) that I committed in the paper attempt and this will certainly clear the reason for the 'I don't exactly Know', 'may be',... in this answer.Basically, I committed a blunder of violating my own Paper solving strategy in the actual exam itself. During the mock tests, I followed the same sequence BGCP but every time, I would be left with more than 2 hours for Physics section and in the end I would also be left with more than half an hour to review the entire paper. I certainly felt like 'married in haste' when I joined quora just after the exam, and found some Toppers' answers, admitting that they too devoted a similar amount of time to Physics in the actual exam. Probably 'examination threat' got me slow in BGC sections leaving me struggling in unarguably the most challenging section of AIIMS exam. Another reason may be that I played safer at the last moment and with all self-study & self-planning, you often go on doubting, modifying, rejecting, retrying... with your strategies. Anyways,...Physics: As everybody says, it is worth labelling 'Tough', taking the totality of the circumstances into account. A conceptual and analytical level higher than that of Jee Main, (a few touching Advanced level) to be solved with Less than one third of the time given for a single problem in JEE ADVANCED and a bit more than half of the time given for a single problem in Jee Main, with all sorts of examination threat and exaggerated with 'AIIMSD and a few more seats' ... all thoughts render you nothing but struggling! As I never studied any NCERT for Physics as well, I am ineligible to declare it to be 'Majoritarily? /Partially NCERT Based' whatever it was! (And I bet you're fooling yourself if you take the former one).The A&R's of this section are the most analytical and brainstorming. And yes, Semiconductors and Communication systems play a crucial role, which I ignored to some extent during revisions. I honestly feel that NCERT should help one score well in Physics A&R's as they ask from the very intricacies of the topics. Here are a few…1. Dimensional formula of capacitive reactance isAns. [M1L2T-3A-2]2. The dimensions of a p-n junction are l x b (mm x mm) and the width of the depletion region is d mm, find the capacitance3. A loop is placed close to a long wire as shown in the given figure. Current in the wire varies as i = (0.1+10t) A. Find induced emf in the loop4. Assertion: Transformer uses soft iron coreReason: Soft iron has low permeability5. Assertion: MRI causes least damage to the adjacent cellsReason: It employs radiations with less frequencyHighlights: I attempted 178 questions. Out of the left ones more than two thirds were of Physics. Out of those left in other sections, most were the ones 'Marked for Review' which I unfortunately lost because I could not review (except Biology) then in the end (AIIMS does not evaluate this lot of questions, unlike JEE). Towards the end, I lost my cool (which I blundered to maintain in the other sections) and simply 'Messed up'. I left some, Marked some for Review, Skipped some for Calculative and Time demanding reasons,... (I simply don't exactly gather how good/bad I did in Physics).That night I went on till 3 am to gather up questions and analyse my performance. I have randomly put them up somewhere and never took it since then, I shall come up with them when I do collect them in sequence.My performance analysis of that evening goes like: Correct inBiology -> 53-55GK & LTA -> 15-16Chemistry -> 45-54Physics -> 31-37The above figures randomly sum up to a score of around 130-155 (inclusive of the negative) which certainly would be more towards the minima rather than the maxima of the scores (looking at the final AIR).Anyway, this analysis set my mind to some ease after I saw a 30+ in Physics, with all that mess-up. Though Physics is my stronger hand among all subjects, you could not expect for more after that last minute rush in the subject. I knew that this score would certainly land me in AIIMS but AIIMSD??? Next to Impossible, but I continued to comfort myself with Hope (which hardly lasted/was needed for an hour). For I believe in 'Hope for the best and prepare for the worst'.Results: Down there!As the past had it, Biology once again shocked me, rest as expected... Except a better rank!I still didn't repent as yet better a rank with these figures would not have landed me into the 'Second to None' AIIMSD.As of now, I stand at the same place where I did after NEET. After a thorough research (parents, relatives, colleagues, seniors, Quora!,...), I am in no mood of joining any of the other AIIMS, just for the Tag it holds.Even after an unsatisfactory 180 minute go in the NEET, I shall be in the same college I mentioned right in the beginning, to pursue my MBBS ... Was preparing for the IIT-JEE without coaching worth it?

TL:DR; I never had any coaching for IIT JEE, and managed to get a good rank in IIT JEE-2009. The following answer tries to lay down how I did it.I had to choose self study becauseIIT JEE was my dream ( like everybody else ).My parents were not rich enough to pay for my coaching. So I had to do it my self. Now here goes the story.BackgroundI finished my 10th class from Punjab board, Ludhiana. The place I lived in Ludhiana was a village, so none in my class was aware of IIT JEE. I came to know about it only from one of a senior in my neighbor(let's call him X for the moment) who prepared for the exam. And after learning that people passed out of IIT's are paid handsomely, I determined to crack IIT-JEE.I learnt that people have to go to coaching in order to crack JEE, since X had gone to Career Point to prepare for coaching after completing XII. Now since the place I was living was not appropriate as it did not have a proper environment for prepartion ( as I was told by my parents ), it was decided to send me to my maternal aunt's(mausi) house ( Bhagalpur, Bihar, I do not belong to Punjab , my Dad had been settled there, so we had to move! ). And also I was told that I will be admitted to a JEE coaching, post finishing my 12th.Now my 10th exams were over and I had to start the preparation. I was told to focus on 12th exams only, as passing 12th from science background was assumed to be much tougher there ( atleast for me, I would say ), IIT-JEE was second thought. Moreover, I was not a shining star in my school, just an average chap who can do well in maths, for me it was assumed to be even tougher. But I had one thing in my mind, what my Mom used to tell me since my childhood, "Beta! Ek baar jo tum chah lo ki hame karna hai, aur man se usme lag jao, fir tumhari jo bhi zaroorat hogi wo bhagwan poora karenge!" ( Son, once you have decided what you got to do, and work on it with your whole heart, your needs would be completed by God himself ). And I believed in my Mom more than I would in myself. So I knew in heart I would get it ( Honestly! I did believe so ).CLASS 11thYear 2007I moved to my mausi's house, was admitted to a private school. School took care of my XII exams, as well as of my attendance, so I did not need to attend school. I owned my whole 24 hours. In order to begin, I needed books. So I used to spend almost half of my day in a book store, bunking my school. I had brought a few books from Ludhiana only, including Concepts of Physics, HC Verma and Chemistry XI, by Pradeep's publication. I developed a keen interest in physics, especially mechanics and finished the theory upto Simple Harmonic Motion in three months.One day I learnt about IRODOV ( I.E. Irodov, Problems in general physics ) from my school ( I used to go there, if i needed to take a break, to see what professors teach there ). I came to know that JEE top rankers solve IRODOV. So I had to solve IRODOV. I bought this book, and solved first 3 chapters. It was tougher and it took from minutes to days to solve a problem. But then I had to top JEE, giving up was not an option. IRODOV problems made my foundation of physics and maths, especially calculus very good.Also, I had bought a lot of old fitjee physics packages from kabadi-wala's. I solved almost all problems involving mechanics and simple harmonic motion, I had seen so far and was able of solve every other problem from mechanics I could see, by the end of September.But the catch was I did not even know an iota mole concept properly in chemistry at the concerned time. Even in mathematics, I was able to finish only Complex numbers and Sequences and series. Clearly I needed a more systematic approach to prepare. I decided to distribute my time properly, so that I could spend my time on each subject evenly. So I did. But I knew for each subject I need to spend at least a whole day, or I cannot get the depth of it. It had to be flexible. Here was my distribution(I will post a pic of my routine chart if I found ever!) :Monday-Tuesday : Physics(Study only, one chapter in two days!):Wednesday-Thursday : Chemistry(Study only, one chapter in two days!):Friday-Satarday : Maths(Study only, one chapter in two days!):Sunday: Test , all subjectsChemistry: I found this amazing book on physical chemistry, while searching in books market ( or probably a chem teacher told me, I don't remember exactly ), Bruce H. Mahan. The theory in the book was amazing. It had no ambiguity, most of the things were clearly specified. I began to follow this book, for physical.Maths: I bought the book Algebra, SK Goyal, Arihant pubs.Test: I knew, I cannot know how I would perform in a time-constrained environment, unless I practice it myself. So I had to give tests. I built my own testing system. I used to prepare test papers myself, which contained questions from various packages from chapter covered, last week. Most of the time I copied them blindly on a paper, trying not to read the question. But it was tough, so later I started to only note the question references in the paper, and then look up the question from the book. The question papers were JEE-2007 style, containing various objective, assertion-reason, matching questions etc. The question were easy as the packages I had were not of that good quality. They were old packages for some coaching like Resonance, PIE etc. which I bought from kabadi-wala's. But it helped me finishing my syllabus, quickly. I had finished physical chemistry of 11th-12th, almost whole 11th mechanics, Simple Harmonic Motion and thermodynamics, and algebra in maths(Combinatorics, probability, polynomial equations, complex numbers etc). So in these fields all I needed to do was practice.Year-2008-OrganicNow that I had finished almost my 11 physics, and my 11th maths, I had to move on to next sections. I started with organic chemistry. Organic fancied to me from the books. All those double dots over the chemical formula, arrows moving bonds from one place to another, I wanted to do those myselves. However, I had a misconception in my mind that I cannot learn organic chemistry without a teacher. Now when I started to read, the idea become stronger as learning organic was quite boring initially. Electrophiles, Neucleophiles, they are good, but they should belong to physical chemistry. Why are we learning them, here? And then I read a magic formula:1) Resonance,Hyper-conjugation,Inductive Effect all these three tend to disperse the charges.2) Greater the charge, lower the stability(higher potential energy).3) Compounds tend to the state where they are more stable.Now when I brought these three strings together, the whole theory began to make sense. It was my turn to draw all those arrows. Organic became my favorite next to physics. And it was the beginning of class 12th.Class XIISince I had a firm base in mechanics, Electrostats seemed like a cakewalk to me. Most part it dealt with only Coulomb's law, which in turn is a Force law. And I had brought another book of IRODOV ( Electricity book, size smaller than problem book, I dont remember its name )! I had a bibliophilia.I used to buy every second book I liked, by exchanging the book I disliked, or I had finished. A lot of times, when I did not have enough money I used to sold my old books, to buy new books. It was an awesome experience, standing almost whole a day outside book shops unfolding various books. Shopkeepers knew me by this time, and used to allow me to get in and look for the books I want myself. Anyways, my situation again became like it was last year. Physics, Physics and Physics!And one day(about 1-2 August) one of my close relative brought a special news for me. It was special because, for me it seemed like what my Mom told to me had come true. There was a super-30 exam occurring at Bhagalpur. For those who don't know about super-30, it is a special exam which selects best 30 students from Bihar, trains them for IIT-JEE, pays for their food and shelter. Until 2008 it held in patna, was a 2-year program(which I had missed, since I was in Punjab). This was the first time it happened in Bhagalpur. It was named ANG-SUPER 30!Now for me it was difficult to crack the exam, as my 12th syllabus was not even 25% completed. And exam was about to happen in 15 days. So I left all my plans, and built a brand new plan. A plan to finish 12th syllabus in 15 days.I almost finished electrostatics, current and electricity and mordern physics. In maths I finished only Differential calculus. In chemistry- 11th,12th physical complete, organic upto Aldehydes probably!SUPER-30 Exam: Exam went not-so-okay, as I had broken my glasses that day. My glasses are of -5 so I am not able to read something farther than about 6-7 cm. I knew I was not going to crack it. It was somehow frustrating, but I had to live with it.Since I was so sure about the results of my exam, I built a complete new schedule. This time I had an extra edge of having covered most of the syllabus in physics! So all I needed was to complete the syllabus of maths and chemistry, and then I should be able to start solving past year IIT JEE question papers ( I had not tried them yet, fearing that I might lose a good quality of questions ). I started to work upon it.It was only about 7-8 days, when I was studying in my room, and my cousin informs me about a call from some teacher. My mind state was very puzzled at the time, as not many people in Bhagalpur were aware of the telephone number, especially no teachers. Why would somebody call me? He informed me that I have cracked the super-30 exam, and I have been summoned to have a counseling session. WTH? I was so amazed that I didn't even hear what he had to say afterwards, and just hung up the call. This was one of the most surprising and awesome moments of my life. Later I got to know that I had topped the exam, which I didn't believe until I was confirmed of this.I was called for an interview with Abhayanand, DGP of Patna, which I obviously cleared. There were 7 students in our batch, as the quality of students selected for counseling were too low, DGP said ( which I agreed, to some extent, because my rank was 1, after solving very few problems ). So I had not yet the confidence that I will be able to crack JEE. But I believed that if Super-30 had come to Bhagalpur to select me, there had to be some reason!SUPER-30I spent about 2-3 months in super-30, where most of the times we spent in giving tests. We were rarely taught theories. And I liked it. Because of I had a habit of self study, I used to miss most of the theory classes, spent my time in cyber cafe. I made a new friend there UTkarsh, we used to bunk together. He made my orkut profile. I became addicted to internet, however I was serious about my studies. I always had a plan in my mind, how to complete my syllabus within time. I never ever studied for long hours a day, but everything went according to my plan : Complete the syllabus ASAP. And then practice as much as you can.My syllabus was finished, at the end of November. And then came the most depressing moments of my life. One day I deduced from an MTG magzine, that JEE Toppers are usually Olympiad Gold Medalists. Now this made me depressed. I had not even appeared in any Olympiad. How am I supposed to qualify IIT JEE? I was too depressed. To make things even worse, a friend from bansal, who was also at super-30 used to tell around, how things were so organised at Bansal, and how IIT-JEE toppers used to study for prolonged hours there. If this was not enough, my test scores in super-30 were much lower than the highest score in other super-30's, however I used to top in the tests I used to give at my super-30. And my chemistry test scores were even worse, sometimes negative as well. No coaching, No olympiad, so low test scores! Damn!In January I had to return to Bhagalpur, as I had to prepare for 12th exams too. Moreover, it was too depressing there. I promised Abhayanand Sir that I would prepare for my chemistry in Bhagalpur, and returned there.Back to BhagalpurAnd there flashed another brilliant idea in my mind. What if I solve the past year Olympiad questions? If I am able to solve those, I should be able to well in exams as well. I went to market and bought past year INPHO questions book. It was a wonderful book. I used to solve only mechanics question from this most of the others were out of IIT JEE syllabus ( I was too syllabus concerned, I skipped most of my 12th lessons those were out of IIT JEE syllabus, like semiconductors, linear programming etc. ). Luckily, I was able to solve most of the questions. This made me somewhat happy, and confident.Now came the board exams. At the same time, super-30 major tests ( where students from all super-30's united and gave a common test, ranking was done on the basis of that ) were being started, and I had to attend the tests as well. My days and nights were very haphazard, I took board exams in daytime, caught the train to patna in night and took the test there next day. The happiest moment of my life was when I gave first major test after my whole sleepless night ( because I had traveled on a general coach last night, as exam date was not predetermined ), and then topped the exam. I was actually hungry, sleepy and tired when I heard the result after taking the exam.Now it was April 2009, few days before exam was about to be started. I had got patna as my exam centre, and thus I stayed at super-30 lodge we were provided. These days were most relaxing. I did not study anything new as I knew it may have bad effect on my confidence. And I did not solve any questions. Most of my time was spent in cyber cafe, roaming in Patna, listening FM radio, chatting with other fellows, and playing Asphalt on N-66 phone, one of my friend had. Few days before exams, Abhayanand Sir summoned me personally and told me to be confident about exams, as I had the potential of qualifying JEE. It made me even more confident.I had a plan of how to attempt the exam, as well. A very interesting and foolproof plan. I planned to attempt the subjects in the following sequence, chemistry, physics, and then maths. Chemistry was expected to be over in at most 40-45 minutes, for most of the questions were to be answered from memory only. Physics, in at most 1 hour, and mathematics was supposed to take indefinite time as, some of the ideas might not click immediately. So I will have more than enough time for mathematics.And then came the exam. A day prior to my exam, we went to play volleyball. There I got a sprain in middle finger in my right hand. It was a strong sprain, however I chose not to tell about this to anybody else, as I felt it might seem like an excuse for not cracking JEE. Moreover it seemed to me a good omen as I had broken my glasses in super-30 as well and I had topped there. Exam was bit easier than I expected. And I took the exam, all according to my plan. The whole day went passed easily. And then it was over. I calculated my marks, which summed upto 295. And I got AIR 633!Conclusion:In my case I see it as complete product of planning. To qualify JEE by self study, you need the following capabilities:You should be able to understand books by yourself(of-course, you won't have any teacher to teach you!). You should be able to think!Never give up. There will be a lot of moments, when the odds seemed to be against me. But there is a reason you get 2 years to prepare for JEE. Be patient and try again. Sooner or later, you will achieve what you wish for.Planning! And Consistency! Instead of working hard randomly, plan how you wish to finish this, and then STICK TO YOUR PLAN! But if you see it needs any modification, iterate over it! Make a flexible plan, which you should be able to change as required. I had a core objective, Finish Your Syllabus, and then Practice. And then in between a lot of plans changed, but they all achieved this objective.Get someplace where you give tests in a group of good students. I had super 30 tests, but you can join any kind of All India Test Series. This will help you gain confidence. What are the tips to crack the JEE-Advanced?

Strategy Hmm….Well You could plan a strategy for attempting the Jee Advanced Paper but trust me you will not be able to execute that strategy completely during the exam . Purely because JEE Advanced is different every year in a unique way and Exam Pressure.Obviously toppers have their GOLDEN way of solving the paper which works for them not for everyone . I say this because i did the “Toppers Way” in the Exam and seriously messed up.In most Allen tests i used to follow my own strategy solving chem first fully and then the others as i was always confident in Chemistry than othersBut i thought exactly like you — “Why not follow topper’s Strategy that might improve my scores. I also tried one or two papers that way and yes i felt this method a little hard but thought i could do this in exam as all toppers suggest this”Advice : Never follow anyone’s Strategy - Define your OwnObviously as far as my experience even your strategy could be a bad idea in a completely never seen before Exam Pattern- JEE ADVANCED.Jee basically tests whether you could solve the paper by making the right strategy on the spotThis is an important attitude that you need to develop while giving practice tests .Sometimes Maths is hard, sometimes chemistry and at times physics or maybe two subjects . The best thing to do is to max out your score in the easiest of the three subjects ( you will realise its benefits after seeing your jee Adv Results)You would be so happy for that subject that pushed your rank so much and made your day….Identifying the easier and smashing it and then coming to the harder subjects and solve as much as possibleThe more you have solved in the easier paper( More the confidence you have gained)Suppose you have attempted chemistry for 124/132 you are pretty sure you have guaranteed marks in your bag , now its time to pick as much as possible from others(easier questions from other two hard subjects) and fill your bag as much as you can.I found this as the best method until date and even followed it many times in my mocks and scored even 65 percent total score(Allen Tests)But finally i used the “toppers way” in jee AdvAttempt easy questions from all subjects in round 1 ( allocate 45 min)Attempt medium questions in round 2Attempt hard questions in round 3But to my surprise in first 45 min i had barely solved 5,6 questions as all questions in math and phy were hard in 2020.So i wasted so much time , now you may tell me to follow my old style now as its not too late….But here is the twistAfter wasting 45 min my heartbeat at 150/100. Shivering for a while….this will affect your method or process too as you are now NERVOUSThen browsed a minute and found chem easy . Took 25 min completed max chem and left 3,4 for review quickly jumped to physics solved as much as i could and left 7,8 questionsI solved a question right but failed to mark it in the system, calculation errors would occur (These are games played by my friend named “Nervous”)Now i have about 70 min left and started maths(deadly) . I wasnt able to find which are easy which are hard somehow solved some questions guessed some (as the whole question palette seemed RED )I had 13 min left i came back to chem checked my marked for review questions and solved 2–3 questions in physics too ..This was my paper-1 experience … i will come up with my second paper experience in another post( else you will get bored).So trust your method ,Follow your mind, Keep Calm and rock the paperYou are welcome to follow toppers strategy if it works well for you . This is just my experience and i do not insist anyone to follow this . Just give it a try if it suits you well then go ahead .
