What is it like to work in Accenture?

I can't speak about the management consulting division of the company, but I was an associate software engineer and worked side by side with the technology and systems integration consultants. Besides the pay gap (which is quite large) and the expectations late career (software engineering becomes a technical subject matter expert, consulting goes into management) the day to day work is largely the same.I’ll focus this answer around the things that tech/SI consultants and software engineers shared in the United States. For things specific to the software engineering track, look here: James Wong's answer to What is it like to work as an Associate Software Engineer at Accenture? What are the perks? What’s the culture like and the value in the market?WorkAccenture is best known for consulting, but what is consulting exactly? I would describe consulting as “asking someone else to figure it out for you.” Accenture’s bread and butter is tech consulting so that means consultants, and by extension software engineers, have to figure out how companies can do business better using technology. Accenture won’t create these from scratch, but instead use common enterprise platforms suites like SAP, Oracle, Red Hat, or Workday. Example high profile projects would be implementing an SAP system to keep track of parts during shipping and manufacturing, or developing financial reporting tools. If you want a more specific idea of what Accenture does with technology, this is a good case study to read: Accenture and Lacoste: Establishing a Digital Presence in ChinaAs for what I did specifically, I was working on a loan disbursement system for the US Department of Education, enabling students to sign up loans online. The work we did helped the US DOEd transition the student loan sign up process to fully electronic system, eliminating the need for paper. My role within all this was to set up the middleware administration environment, troubleshoot development issues, and test the performance of the new code before we ship to production. The biggest project, and first project as a new hire, I had was to figure out how to transition one of the legacy middleware systems into a modern open source middleware management system. It was a lot of work considering I never knew what middleware was until I joined. Somehow I pulled it off. It was actually pretty exciting to see something I worked on from the very beginning go into a production system. As important and cool as this may sound, this isn’t going to light the world on fire, nor is it very analytical. This is a far cry from what I’ve been doing now a days, wearable device mechanical design, hardware reliability for tablets / computer hardware, and analysis of electric vehicle powertrains. Every person is different but I honestly prefer doing the latter to this kind of information systems work at Accenture.Career AdvancementAt Accenture and most other consulting firms, you are hired as a resource. Once you are in then you have to apply to projects within Accenture. It’s kind of like applying to another job, except the interview is much more casual. Projects can vary wildly depending on the engagement partners there. Your first project may be a crapshoot because HR wants you staffed ASAP. In most cases you’ll have to tough it out at this first project before you get to where you want to be.In addition, each person is assigned a career coach, someone who helps you develop your career at Accenture. This is a pretty standard practice among consulting and professional development firms. It’s the career coach’s job to help you maximize your time at Accenture, find opportunities, and most importantly vouch for you during promotion time. I know Accenture got rid of stacked ranking recently but a lot of things here should still apply.Getting ahead in consulting is all about networking, so it’s important that you develop relationships with people from other teams, your career coach, and other projects. When you know other people, they can vouch for you and let you know about opportunities that you really want.Networking is especially important when you want to move between functional areas (like from testing to functional analyst). I found moving between functional areas to be very difficult, as I was trying to get into data science when the term was still new. Configuring middleware platforms wasn’t very engaging for me so I wanted to find something that was more analytical and relied on numbers to make strategic decisions. My manager was open to me moving within the project since we could simply talk to other managers but this project had no data science team. Since I couldn’t do any data science work on the project, no one wanted to bring me on board to a project that had that component.Watch out for bench time! Being on the bench means your not staffed to a project but you still get paid. While it might be nice to take it easy for few days, you can't fly to Mexico for a month. Your career is going to suffer either with a lower rating or being forced onto a bad project.EnvironmentIf you ever seen Accenture ads at the airport, you’ll find that they’re a bit quirkier or cuter than what you would expect in a conservative industry like consulting. This translated into the culture as well since I would consider it a bit more relaxed than comparable consulting firms like Deloitte and PwC. Your still expected to dress business casual however, I got docked for wearing sneakers to work a few times. (Of course at the place I work now, I wear track pants and a sweater half the time and no one gives a hoot)I think the biggest thing about the environment is the people. Maybe it was the fact that we were all struggling in the trenches together, but the people I’ve worked with were really great and we would always get together to celebrate milestones or just to have fun.BenefitsEverything here is standard fare. You have your 401k with employer matching, health insurance, PTO, maternity leave, etc. I think one of the lesser used perks is the “perks at work” program. A third party company manages perks program for Accenture and a lot of other companies, and you can get some neat discounts on cell phone plans, gym memberships, movie tickets, and a bunch of other random things. When I was there, every employee got a corporate American Express card they could use for business or personal transactions. Just make sure you pay that in full every month!I’m not sure if this is a firm wide policy, but at my project we had “comp time” If you worked overtime and it wasn’t approved, you would get comp time which is additional PTO time you can use. It helped me maintain a good work life balance. One thing that I liked is the “Accenture Day of Service.” Everyone in the firm had a chance to take a day out of the office and go volunteer for different causes. Sure, it’s pretty standard across all professional services firms but I enjoyed doing it.My Personal Take on AccentureI gave a rather harsh answer in my previous answer since I was bitter about a lot of things leaving, namely the low rating I got despite pulling off a highly visible project, feeling like a second class citizen compared to the consultants, and also not living up to the potential I thought I had. Now would I like Accenture more had I been in consulting? Most likely. Would I choose Accenture consulting over where I currently work? Of course not are you crazy!?I still stand by my statements but I know that people can be very successful starting their careers here, so I’ll offer a few scenarios. Of course, since I left to pursue grad school and eventually got wrapped up in electric vehicles, it's pretty obvious what camp I'm in.Accenture is a great company to work for and I recommend it if you…are interested to see how business and technology intersectwant relevant skills in an increasingly tech-centric business worldlike to explore different industries before you decide where to settlewant to get into tech without a programming backgroundI wouldn’t recommend it if you…love science and engineeringhardcore programmerwant to do something innovative or disruptive

What should everyone know about Management Consulting, not necessarily the things you will find in company promotional materials?

“Consultants are like doctors for companies”, says Olga Narvskaia, a former employee of BCG. Many company’s top management will have a problem, like “revenues are falling”, “costs are growing disproportionately” or “we want to enter a new market and don’t know how”. Enter consultants. They help the decision-makers think through these problems. The main role of the consultant is to be a thought partner to help structure the approach, bring in best practices and generally help the client think through the difficult issue they are facing. Some clear advantages that being a consultant are:Change is great: And it doesn’t get better than consultancy. Although your projects may take from a few weeks to over a year, chances of your work becoming mundane is very low. What you do and the client you’re working for will change quite often.All-star Team: If you are on a team of consultants, chances are you are working with some pretty bright people. Great company means high job satisfaction.Career Growth Opportunities: Most consulting companies spend a lot of money on training their people. This means you can add on a variety of skills on the company’s dime. Such as new technologies, people management skills, etc. If you decide to leave some day, you’re highly attractive to other companies.Building Networks: Because you’re working with such a wide variety of people – both on the project teams staffed by your company and with clients – you’ll build up an impressive network very fastThe Big Bucks: A full-time consultancy job offers a generally high pay along with a plethora of benefits. These may include healthcare benefits and stock options.Of course no job is without its disadvantagesHectic Schedules: Late nights, work on weekends and last minute travel plans become part of your life and there’s no escape from such situations in this profession.Travel, travel: Some people absolutely love travelling week in and week out for work. However, most of us find it tiresome after a certain point. Why? Refer above point.High Dropout rates: We wouldn’t be exaggerating when we say consulting firms experience a high turnover rate – the work takes its toll and a lot of people wish to leave. Families and more stable positions seem very attractive after a certain point.Working at the computer: Many may not hate this, but it’s true that roughly 70% of your time is consumed in writing slides, building Excel models, compiling secondary research, doing primary research (like talking to customers in focus groups)The job is one of the most dynamic ones in the world. But still, here is an account of your “typical” day as a management/strategy consultant on a project with heavy client interaction6 AM – Alarm wakes you up. First thing you see? Your dearest blackberry/Smartphone. Presentation slides and daily reports from your colleagues from previous night welcome you. All the presentations appear to be in good shape, which means you save a lot of time today. Sigh of relief.7 AM – You are all ready, have breakfast and by 7.30 am you are on your way to your office. Car means the rush-hour traffic and train means unbearable crowd. Anyways, while reading the newspaper on your phone, you reach the office, just on time.8.30 AM – You have settled into our office for the day, a long day. An afternoon visit to your client’s office is scheduled.9 AM – Before any meetings you sit down to clean out the enormous inbox piled up from the last few days, for your concentration on this day’s presentation. Random forwards from friends and other analysts, emails from ex-teammates, surveys and questionnaires litter your inbox. The excel sheets look good to be sent, but only after fixing the usual typos, missing footnotes, and weird alignment issues.12.15 PM – Team meeting starts a little late. You’ve fixed your presentation, for the manager to take over once the video conference session with the German firm starts. After brief introductions the manager takes the CEO through the complete agenda, suggestions to tackle their submitted problem. There is a question answer session where you churn out data and facts on the methods used. German team seems satisfied.1.30 PM – Team lunch with the clients, whose project your team is handling. Through forced socializing you people have gotten to know them on a quasi-personal level. You are mentally preparing for the afternoon meet. Even though your manager is handling the presentation, you shall be called on if anyone has questions about the data, the methodology, etc.2.30 PM – Get a mail from the HR guys. Again asking for the “magic time”, as if you’re not busy enough already. (Well, magic time refers to office contributions that are expected of each consultant and can take the form of recruiting, training, social impact work, etc) You choose to tell them decision later.3 PM – Manager informs the team that the client is unhappy and has mentioned that the senior client had some questions recently about scope being too narrow (i.e, you guys are not doing enough) hence, before you head off to the second client’s office you meet the team in the adjacent conference room and outline the plan to tackle the situation. Work is distributed and you leave the office.4.15 PM – Reach client’s headquarters. Conference room is full of different team managers. The task looks intimidating. Next two hours spent on issue discussions. Your manager tries to explain but the managers don’t agree on anything – how to address the scope issue, which client to address it with, what our recommendation should be. Frustration builds up. Some people leave for other meetings. Finally the meeting concludes without any real consensus. Another meet is scheduled for the end of the week, with the MD promising to bring a consensus amongst the group members.6.30 PM – Your team wraps up the meeting. Your manager says that the team has a busy schedule packed with client interviews (Trying to gather more qualitative insights to further reinforce the data findings). Receive email attachment with a messy spreadsheet with bad formatting. You resolve to fix this within the next two days.7 PM – Going back home. The plan ahead? Take-away dinner in front of the idiot box and few hours of work involving incorporating all the new details discussed today in the presentations, for the next day.If you relish unexpected challenges every day, and having to work ‘uphill’ with every new project and want to build a wide range of skills (especially soft skills like stakeholder management) then consulting can be an ideal career.

Purchased software from them that continuously crashed my pc, contacted them within an hour of downloading and trying to use, but got no response. Ended up purchasing a replacement video editor program from Movavi, which works perfectly and requested a refund from CocoDoc to no avail. Never got to actually use CocoDocs program and feel I have been completely ripped off. Movavi is easy to use, does an excellent job and doesn't crash my PC. Defintely wont be dealing with CocoDoc again.
