What are some cultural differences between Quebec and other provinces of Canada?

There is a big food scene in Quebec. Foodies flock here because of the diversity, food festivals and we have such amazing chefs. We’re definitely lucky, there is always something new and available to try! We also have our own cuisine and traditions, poutine, tourtiere(meat pie), sucre a la creme(sugar fudge), cretons (brings me back to my grandmothers kitchen, Yum! it’s a meat spread), pouding chomeur(cake like dessert with gooey maple syrup or caramel), soupe aux pois(pea soup), pets de soeurs(a kind of pastry with a maple syrup sauce) …So many tasty comfort food recipes that make me so happy!Quebec hosts so many festivals all year round. The Just for Laughs comedy festival, the Montreal Jazz Fest, Montreal Gay Pride Parade, the Grand Prix du Canada, Franco Folies which is a huge event for french music artists, Osheaga Music and Arts Festival, PoutineFest, Quebec city hosts the Winter Carnival…..so many fun things to do.Quebec loves various art forms and I love seeing new activities and festival come to life!We have a huge maple syrup obsession since we’re the biggest producer of maple syrup in the world. Every year we flock to the ‘Cabane a sucre’ aka sugar shack/sugar bush(terms vary depending on where you live) for a traditional meal, music and maple syrup treat. I know there are some other provinces and even some states that make their own syrup but I think Quebec really goes all out with the folk music, dancing, the quantity of maple cooked food…oh the thought of it makes me yearn for the next sugar season. Our favorite tradition at the ‘Cabane a Sucre’ is the maple syrup treat at the end of our meal. They heat up the maple syrup and have a trough packed with fresh, clean snow. You pour the hot maple syrup over the snow and take a Popsicle stick, place it in the hardening cooled maple syrup and roll the delicious treat so that it looks like a lollipop. It’s like heaven!

Is the city of Montreal well-known internationally?

Montreal is definitely well-known throughout North America. The French-Canadian culture helps it stand out from other big cities in Canada and the US, although in truth, if you don't speak French and only know one Canadian city, it's probably Toronto and not Montreal.A good American city that compares to Montreal in terms of its international profile is probably a city like Boston: rich in history but not quite as well-known as New York or Miami. New Orleans works well also with its French heritage, vibrant music scene, and of course, its wild side.Internationally, because Montreal has the second largest French-speaking population, it is fairly well-known and well-regarded among Francophones. Montreal attracts a lot of students and immigrants from countries like Algeria, Lebanon, Haiti, and, of course, France.Marquee events like the Grand Prix du Canada, the Just For Laughs comedy festival, and the Festival International du Jazz also help boost the city's image. If you’re not French, and not an F1 fan, there are still other reasons you may have heard of Montreal. If you’re Russian and a hockey fan for example, you’ve almost surely heard of the Montreal Canadiens, hockey’s oldest and most storied franchise. Or, if you live in Mexico and are a soccer fan, Montreal may have hit your radar recently because the Montreal Impact were finalists in last year’s CONCACAF Champions League, losing in the final stage to Mexico City’s Club America. The Impact also made waves recently when they acquired Didier Drogba, one of the world’s most famous footballers.

When is the best time of year to visit Quebec?

It really depends on what you’re looking for experiencewise.SummerThis is the best time for people like me who love festivals and outside activities. From June to September, there are multiple festivals all around the provincethat are worth attending. If you think about visiting Quebec city, you’ll have the FEQ (Festival d’été de Québec) in July, Festival d’Opéra de Québec in end lf July - early August, Fêtes de la Nouvelle-France in August, Grands Feux Loto-Québec in August, Festibière de Quebec in August as well, Envol & Macadam in September, etc.If you want to visit the province, then there are even more festivals. I can think of a few in Montreal area: Osheaga, Francofolies, Festival International de Jazz, Just for Laugh, Piknic Electronik, Grand Prix du Canada, ÎleSoniq, etc.If you want to go outside the big cities, Montebello’s Rockfest, St-Tite’s Western Festival, Bethanie’s La Grosse Lanterne Festival, etc.As you can see, we are a very festive population during summer, so if that’s what you’re looking for, summer it is!FallI think fall is the best season for people who would like to explore the wilderness and enjoy the beauty of the colorful landscapes. When I say fall, I mean October. Don’t come in November as most of the leaves will be on the ground and the landscapes looks pretty sad. It’s getting a little colder, but not as cold as winter so you can still enjoy the outside without freezing.Hiking, canoeing, kayaking, camping, all great activities to do during fall. It’s great to do during summer as well, although you’ll miss the powerful colors of nature.WinterIf you like sports and are not afraid of cold, you’ll love winter. Ski, snowboard, skidoo, dog sled, skate, hockey, snowshoes, are some of the outside activities you can enjoy during that time of the year. You can also enjoy some sports competitions like The Redbull Crashed Ice for example. If you come during winter, you won’t want to miss the Carnaval de Québec with the Bonhomme Carnaval and the ice hotel! Many activities are happening in the Old Quebec during that period. In Montreal there is also the Igloofest, for electro music lovers, The Art Souterrain Festival, Montreal en lumières, and other activities that are also pretty fun, in case you would like to travel to Montreal as well.SpringBe advised. Snow is melting, there’s slush everywhere and it’s dirty. Weather is changing all the time and you never know what to wear outside.Although, this weather is exactly what it takes for maples to produce water, which leads to the best of the best maple syrup! If you would like to discover the most quebecois activity ever, and eat delicious local food, you need to come in spring to enjoy the sugar shacks where we serve our traditional brunch made with fresh maple syrup products. It’s also a must to try the maple taffy on snow. I also encourage you to take a sugar bush tour to better understand the history and transformation process. Some of them will even let you taste the maple water directly from the tree!I hope this enlighten you and help you figure out what time is “the best”.
