I met Anthony Perkins, the star of Alfred Hitchcock’s big 60’s hit “Psycho” when he came to our small city to do summer stock. I was a high school kid at the time and an unpaid volunteer working as a grunt for a Summer theatre company hauling scenery and doing odd jobs as there was no McDonald’s and virtually no summer jobs available other than a bag boy slot at the local A&P, but that was handed down from brother to brother like some kind of valuable inheritance.There was a big buzz that a somewhat famous actor was going to be coming to town to join our Summer Stock Players, we were all guessing it would be some second banana in a crappy sitcom, but when it was announced it was Anthony Perkins there was a sense of disbelief, this was the guy who starred in “Psycho,” a huge movie just three years ago. We were told to not approach him and only speak to him if he spoke to you first. He was a very quiet guy, said very little, and kept pretty much to himself except for the amount of time he spent with the director.Not long after he arrived, I was coming home in my old beat-up VW bug when I spotted him walking up what was a very steep street with three bags of groceries in the rain. We were aware he was staying in a rented room not far from the theatre.Throwing caution to the wind, and in spite of being told we were to leave him alone, I pulled over and flung open the passenger door and yelled get in. He stooped down and came in a flash, I grabbed a couple of bags and put them in the back, but he couldn’t get into the seat of my little VW bug, he was too tall, finally, he was able to push the seat back, and with his knees under his chin, we chugged up the hill.I told him that I was a volunteer at the theater and right away he turned and looked at me and said, I don’t mean to insult you or your town by why are the people so standoffish, LOL. He broke out laughing when I told him we weren’t allowed to talk to him only if he spoke to us first.A couple of days later while hauling props onto the stage, I saw him going out of his way to talk to everyone, and they to him. As I was walking off the stage after delivering some props, in about three steps he caught me and gave me a big hug. LOL. I couldn’t resist so I said, “ Jesus I would have given anyone a ride when it was raining, not just a movie star” with that he put his head back and roared with laughter. We all found him to be a real quality person.
