The incredible Mariana Trench:Located in the Western Pacific, it is an oceanic depression that boasts the record of “deepest point on Earth” and, probably, the darkest place in the world (sunlight does not penetrate more than 150 metres deep).The Challenger Deep represents the deepest point ever measured on Earth's crust: 10,994 metres, where it is rather cold (average temperature of 3 degrees Celsius).Well, 11 thousand metres deep. A practical example? If Everest (the highest mountain on Earth, 8,848 metres above sea level) were located inside the Mariana Trench, it would still take more than 2,000 metres to reach the surface of the ocean.In January 1960, Lieutenant Don Walsh and oceanographer Jacques Piccard, aboard the U.S. Navy's TRIESTE II bathyscaphe, were the first to reach the bottom of the Mariana Trench, measuring a depth of 10,916 metres.Jacques Piccard declared: “The bottom is of a white-grey mud ... we could see through the plexiglass porthole turning on the lights. The water was very clear, the temperature was 3.5 °C, but inside the bathyscaphe, they were 8-10 °. We stayed at the bottom twenty minutes. We were also extraordinarily lucky because we could see two animals, a shrimp and a kind of sole.”
