On the whole, lawyers become “specialists” through experience. I put the word specialist in quotes because it is impermissible in many jurisdictions to refer to yourself as a specialist unless you meet specific requirements. In order to practice patent law, you must take a test and become a member of the patent bar, but otherwise lawyers can practice whatever they like. At least here in the US.Here in Pennsylvania, where I practice, in order to call yourself a specialist or an expert, you must either practice patent or admiralty law, or you must have taken a test approved by the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. There aren’t very many areas in which you can specialize here in Pennsylvania, because there aren’t many such approved tests.At any rate, as far as law goes, we tend to learn by doing more than by any other method. Most frequently we work with another lawyer in the practice area and develop our knowledge over time. We can further our educations if we desire, by obtaining an additional degree called an LLM, but most lawyers do not do this.
