PDF Editor FAQ

If New Hampshire is so well-regarded and libertarian, why don't many people live or want to work there?

Well, I and my wife are certainly considering moving …I think my biggest dampener is that many onerous laws come from the Federal Government, not from state government. While creating a more libertarian state does increase freedom, the Federal Government is constantly expanding into state affairs, and so even a libertarian state may not be able to retard the march to authoritarianism.Advances So FarThat being said, New Hampshire has enjoyed many advances in human freedom from the Free State Project[1]:Jury Nullification: Allowing jury nullification to be explained in court cases (such that the jury can find “Not Guilty” if they believe the law itself is wrong.)[2]Civil Annoyances: Undermining parking meters[3]More libertarians: 2,000 participants moved early and 20,000 have promised to move[4]Bill Monitoring: Creating a Republican Liberty Caucus[5]in the state house and a NH Freedom Caucus[6]Drug War: Starting the NH Cannabis Festival and the NH Hempfest and Freedom Rally[7], decriminalizing marijuana[8] and medical marijuana[9]School Choice: Fighting for schooling choice [10] [11]Self-Protection: Gun laws [12] and knife laws [13]Home Schooling: Deregulating home schooling[14]Relationship laws: Creating gay marriage law [15]Self Protection: Strengthening castle doctrine[16] and stand your ground law[17]Government Taxation: cutting spending and taxes more than 10% [18]Protecting from Police: video taping police [19]Free Association: libertarian local charities, clubs, churches, and activist groups.Festivals: The Porcupine Freedom Festival[20]every summer in Lancaster NH, with 2000 attendees. The NH Liberty Forum[21] during the winter (which featured whistleblower Edward Snowden and is now hosted by Reason magazine).Continued Freedom: Top ratings for the state in business and liberty indicies[22] year after year.Monitoring Bills: Creating the most effective grassroots political action group, the New Hampshire Liberty Alliance[23], which monitors and rates bills for whether it increases or decreases human freedom.Libertarian representation: Moving many libertarians into the state legislature as both Republicans and Democrats, and three actually holding state legislative office as Libertarian Party members. [24] [25]Update: Carol and I bought a house on the NH coast a bit over a year after I wrote the above, and we’re now in NH on weekends and vacations and planning on retiring there.See Related:What is most libertarian state in the US?Can progressive states be free of conservative laws? How would CalExit benefit the country?Should liberals embrace federalism?Should liberals have their own state? How could a libertarian society be achieved?→ Essays on <Diffusing Libertarianism> by Dennis→ Return to the <Table of Contents> for Dennis’ Libertarian EssaysFootnotes[1] A Proven Strategy for Liberty in Our Lifetime[2] Jury Nullifies Case Against Man Charged With Growing Marijuana[3] Libertarians Trail Meter Readers, Telling Town: Live Free or Else[4] Free State project reaches goal[5] Republican Liberty Caucus of New Hampshire[6] NH House Freedom Caucus[7] NH Cannabis Freedom Fest to bring 'liberty, freedom, love' and bake-off to Granite State | NH1[8] New Hampshire legislature decriminalizes marijuana possession, sends pro-pot bill to governor’s desk[9] New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services[10] New Hampshire Senate approves bill to to set up ‘education freedom savings accounts’[11] Croydon School Board Prepared For School Choice Court Battle With State[12] House passes repeal of 'concealed carry' gun license law | New Hampshire [13] The History of New Hampshire's Knife Rights Movement[14] Legal Requirements[15] Same-sex marriage in New Hampshire - Wikipedia[16] Stand Your Ground/Castle Doctrine[17] N.H. stand-your-ground law stands[18] New Hampshire On Track for Triggered Tax Cuts - Tax Foundation[19] http://new hampshire video taping police[20] https://nhlibertyforum.comhttp://porcfest.com/schedule/[21] NH Liberty Forum[22] How Free Is YOUR State? Why are people in rural areas in New England very liberal? (oftentimes even more than those in urban areas)

While it is quite interesting that the Democratic Party is quite competitive and successful in rural New England compared to other rural areas in the US, the true assessment is that New Englanders are very independent minded, especially in the North.Another wrong assumption is that rural New England is 100% Democratic. The GOP wields a pretty decent amount of power in New Hampshire and Maine, and Massachusetts’s governor is also a GOP member, however…… Most Republicans in our region are not your stereotypical Republican that you see on Faux News these days. For example-Chris Sununu, New Hampshire GOP governorPro-ChoicePro-LGBT+Signed bills that prohibited conversion therapy on minors as well and that prohibited discrimination based on gender identityRefused to send NH national guard troops to the US/Mexico border after it was revealed that children were being separated from their parentsWhile on the New Hampshire Executive Council, he and other council members, along with the New Hampshire Attorney General, formed Home Help NH. This group helps NH citizens in financial distress and who were taken advantage of by large banks during the sub-prime mortgage crisis.Does this guy really sound like your typical bible thumping Republican from down South or in the Midwest? No, and this leads to my next point. Most Republicans in New England are moderates or libertarians. Of course to a social conservative from Kansas, Sununu is a closet liberal, but these types of Republicans are the norm up here in New England, and in a sense, they are the “descendants” of great Republicans of the past like Teddy Roosevelt and Dwight D. Eisenhower. The New England GOP still maintains the past GOP agenda of individual freedoms, environmentalism, and fiscal conservatism which is absent from the GOP in the rest of the nation.Another important distinction to make is that people in New England are very independent as said in other answers and earlier in my own. It’s not liberal or conservative, but simply free will. If you want to piss off somebody from New England, try telling them what to do and how to think. Things like gay marriage, abortion, marijuana, and other “taboo” topics are never really issues here unlike in most of the US among liberals and conservatives alike simply because there is a mentality here that is tolerant of personal choice and lifestyle. We don’t care if you’re liberal, conservative, gay, redneck, hippy, transgender, socialist, stoner, atheist, Black, White, Asian, Latino, Multi-racial, or whatever. Do whatever you please with your personal life, just don’t enforce your morals on us. Is it really any surprise that social conservatives and other such people perform so poorly in elections in New England? There is also a collectivist streak in New England culture that may give off the impression of everybody being “liberal.” A great example of this are town-hall meetings, where the common citizens themselves decide how they, the people, want their tax dollars to be used and we work together as a group to figure out what is best for our communities. Another thing that is evident of this is Bernie Sanders. While he is seen as a “socialist” in most of the country, he is easily the most popular politician in our region by a long shot with social democratic views being mainstream and common among New Englanders. I actually know a fair amount ex/current Republicans here who are actually in favor of universal healthcare because it is vastly cheaper than our current mess of a system. So yes, while New England is by far the most progressive region of the nation, it is also the most independent-minded and free thinking.

Do those foreigners who have lived in China find life in their home countries not as convenient when coming back home?

Yes. My home state is New Hampshire.when I go back home I have to rent a car. It is just not possible to get around without one.so let’s say I want to get something, like some fruit. Well I have to get in the car and drive 10 to 15 minutes. Crap, I need gas. Well stop at the gas station. In China I can literally go to the first floor of my apartment building to buy fruit. In fact I can get a meal at one of several restaurants or do grocery shopping at several locations that are just a 5 minute walk.If I want to go to a mall or some specialty shop in China I have a couple choices that are less than a 30 minute walk or a 5 to 10 minute taxi ride. In the US its a 30 minute car ride.In China I can have foo or just coffee delivered from just about any restaurant. In the US most wont deliver beyond a certain radius if at all.Getting to the airports in China is pretty effortless and low stress. Trains are efficient and inexpensive and even a taxi is cheap. No need to bother people to come and pick me up. In the US it is too expensive to get a taxi so you have to inconvenience someone to pick you up.even paying for things is effortless with payment systems like We Chat and Alipay. In the states paying by credit card is now an annoyance.Of course there are things that are not so convenient in China. But those are not usual daily activities so it doesn’t matter so much. I guess the biggest thing for me is that I don’t have to have a car to live in China. I now realize what a total pain it is to have a car. Gas maintenance, registration, insurance, washing it, oil changes etc etc
