I am a drill sergeant. You can enlist at 17. However you cannot be enlisted against your will. Just tell the recruiter you don't want to join right now. The recruiter will tell you to have a nice day and call them if you change your mind. If that, for some amazing and strange reason doesn't work, when you go to meps and you are away from your dad and recruiter, tell them you are being forced to join against your will.Problem solved.

As a former Marine Drill Instructor at Parris Island, I witnessed many recruits who did this. In fact, I did the same when I was a recruit at PI. I also did the same when I attended “recruit training” again at Drill Instructor School at Parris Island. I did the same in the school that trained those for the elite duty as Marine Embassy Guards.As long as they don’t disrupt the important sleep of others, it’s fine. I seldom encouraged recruits to do this. I did learn that most recruits who do this end up being ahead of others. They also graduated with higher scores. DIs who witnessed those that did, usually thought more of a recruit who would sacrifice sleep to get ahead. That doesn’t mean every recruit who did this was superior to others. Some sacrifice sleep because they were having a difficult time learning various subjects. Some recruits lie in their bunks using their flashlight too study notes. (Note: Flashlights are issued to recruits for safety. When recruits are marching or running when dark, certain recruits have to run ahead of the formation to act as road guards. Thus, ensuring vehicle stop.)I was a DI at the peak of the war in Vietnam (67–68). Our platoons were much larger than normal. We always had a category of recruits who God made that had a difficult time learning. It wasn’t their fault. I did encourage smarter recruits, especially those who had attended college, to help these recruits. It wasn’t unusual for the two to seek a place to hide out in the dark to study. Both sacrificed sleep. They had to hide because officers would frequently enter the squad bay to “check on things”. I will say this. Many of the not-so-smart recruits were highly motivated. They realized they had certain deficiencies. They were willing to pay any price to pass tests, excell in performance, and become superb Marines.
