PDF Editor FAQ

How do you know when horses don’t want you to ride them?

I read the responses with wry amusement. The horses or suggestions relate to a poorly trained animal or “green” rider that doesn’t understand the nature of a horse. Horses were meant to be work animals. With proper training they can be a productive and willing partner in herding, jumping, dressage, trail riding, roping, driving, and plowing etc. Key word here is “training”. With this “training”, they understand their person’s expectations and react accordingly. If a horse avoids human touch or presence, then they are NOT trained. And of course they don’t want to be ridden.

Does everybody fall off a horse eventually, even accomplished riders?

I never fell off until i started riding other people’s horses as a working student. Other than my shetland pony when I was about 4 and he dumped me outside the barn. I dont count that because well, he’s a shetland pony. I had my Morgan for 14 years, I started eventing on him, doing Childrens Hunter, dressage, trail riding, costume classes, all of the stupid things kids do with horses and NEVER fell off of him. But as soon as I started working with a trainer, and working with green horses, I fell off almost weekly it seemed. Sprained wrists, concussions, dislocated shoulders, whatever. I fell off into a mud puddle once at a top rated show. I just got up, the ring guy grabbed my horse, I swore under my breath and hopped back up on him. we were disqualified naturally and my trainer had me schooling him for seemed like hours while my pants were stuck to my ass. BUT it happens. You either learn from it, or let it scare you. I continued eventing on my own horse until he died and I broke my neck on fall on the cross country course. Its part of learning, its part of being an equestrian. There is no part of being a horse person that is “safe”, not when you’re dealing with a 1500lb animal with a mind of its own. I suppose the best thing you can do, is learn to fall, and the emergency dismount. Two best things I’ve learned.

Can I jump for eventing and cross-country in a dressage saddle?

Can I jump for eventing and cross-country in a dressage saddle?I certainly would discourage you from trying. There is no support from a dressage saddle when you are in even a mild forward-seat position over a small jump. At speed, in the cross-country, you are asking for disaster.I have always trail-ridden my horses in their dressage saddles for their comfort and mine. I can pop over a small log (2 feet or so) if it’s blocking the trail, but that’s one small obstacle from the trot, not a course of them at a brisk canter or gallop. If you can afford only one saddle, look for an all-purpose saddle. It will have a forward flap, but the flap shape behind will allow you to drop your leg long for dressage. You can get an older used Stübben or Kieffer all-purpose in good shape fairly cheaply, as they aren’t fashionable currently. But they’re excellent for function. Just make sure with any used saddle that the tree is in good shape.
