Depending from car market to car market you might want to check the items below which might also come in handy when deciding on multiple vehicles and when you are negotiating price/discount:1. Details of the car (Get your facts straight)* Brand/Model* Chassis N° / VIN N°* Construction year* Miles/Kms* 1st/2nd/3rd owner?* Has the car been checked thoroughly, in Europe we have official checks for this annually/US not so sure?* When was the car last maintenanced? Does it have a record of this on a regular basis.2. Car registration documents (Know who you are buying from)* Chassis number car corresponds chassis number on the docs* Party selling the car is the owner of the car?* Party selling the car has the correct documents?* Maintenance manual is in the car, and has been kept up to date regularly?* Instruction manual is in the car* The vehicle has a certificate of conformity and matriculation? (EU / US?)3. Outside of the car* Car detail of the lacquer - Colour corresponds the colour indicated on the papers, no blurs, no scratches, no colour differences)* Car has no indication of rust (muffler, sidewalls of the doors, interior of the doors, windows, hinges, trunk or hood)* The space in between the different outside panels is equal everywhere around (indication whether or not the car was repaired from significant crashes, accidents) - front / back / doors / hinges* All doors including back close well and show no sign of not closing* Windows of doors, front and back are showing no signs of wear and tear, scratches* Tyres match the original size tyres, -> can cause speed variations on the speedometer* All tyres are of the same type and same profile.* All tyres have minimum (1.4 mm) winter tyres maximum (4 mm) / profile to guarantee safety (EU reg only, /US?)* Spare wheel in the trunk / + in good condition?* Lights work, including indication licence plate lighting4. Inside the car* Car is not wet / moist on the inside, underneath the floor mats, windows...* Seats are in good condition, not worn out , if you have heating, check if it works* The interior of the roof, car and boot are in good shape and don't show wear and tear, (stains, scratches, openings)* Safety belts are there and in good conditions (be strict on this one, as it may save your life)* Windows (electric or not) and ceiling roof, can open without trouble* All buttons and controls work, all electrics work, all gauges work* The rubbor on the pedals is intact (can show sign of heavy driving)5. Under the hood* No oil stains visible* Oil when checked is within limits indicated and also in good shape (colour!)* No white foam underneath the oil filler cap* Cables, hoses, clamps and electrical wiring is in general good shape and maintained (no leaking)* Poles of the battery don't show sign of oxydation and wear and tear (indicates bad battery)* V snares and distribution belt show no signs of wear and tear, ask when the distribution belt was replaced + miles if they know, indicates again heavy driving* Gauge indication of cooling fluid/liquid and brake fluid/liquid fall between the lines indicated on them.6. Underneath the car* Brake claws and discs are in good condition* Brake cilinders and brake lines are in good condition, and not leaking* No sign of oil leaking on the ground from the engine or transmission* Muffler is not rusted and leaking* Suspension and suspension springs are not making any squeeky sounds and or showing signs of cracks, also no leaking* No signs of welding, or suspicious looking repairs.+ also make a note of your own comments underneath this.+ also test drive the carIf you decide to buy the car, always have a real mechanic check it over afterwards before driving it. It might cost you a bit, but better to be safe then sorry, it is your life and that of your passengers you take in hand as a driver.Remember this is only an advice list, take your time checking a car out before you decide to buy one.
