If your car malfunctions/ breaks down and you’re stuck on the side of the road, is your number one choice to call AAA?

It all depends on the problem at hand. Am I out of gas, do I have a flat tire, has my car mysteriously stopped working, has my car spontaneously caught on fire?Diagnose the potential problem. I keep a simple toolkit in my trunk. Screwdrivers, pliers, and simple tools of the sort. If I can’t fix the problem with these tools, I keep the number for Roadside Assistance in my glove compartment as well as in the spare tire well of my car. I make a simple call and wait. I may even call a loved one to let them know I’m currently stuck on the side of the road in the rare event something happens to me.I’ll either wait inside the car with the windows partially down or at a nearby establishment where I can continue to keep an eye on my car. While waiting, I will use my smartphone to find the nearest repair shop that complies with my extended warranty. This way if I need a repair shop, I can tell the tow truck driver where to go with little hesitation. Thankfully towing is inclusive with my extended warranty contract.I’ve never called AAA nor have I been a member. I’ve found suitable service with much better price and benefits elsewhere. In short, I have very very little to worry about. I have a plan, my car has simple tools as well as contact numbers written on laminated paper, and a portable battery charger should I need to charge my device.I’ve had to resort to utilizing my plan 4 times in my life: 2 flat tires, failed alternator, auto accident, and a failed new tire. You’d be amazed how many tools you can store alongside your tire in the spare tire well of a car.

Is a resource available for anyone in a relationship with a covert narc that would assist the victim in navigating irrational convos/narc's tactics, or charts/lists to refer to amidst the confusion/turmoil that results from interacting with an NPD?

There are many, including this forum. There’s an amazing community of Quorans who have direct knowledge and experience dealing with the same issues that you are. You’ll never be alone while wading through this shit. There are many YouTube videos presented by therapists, counselors and survivors. Each adds their own flavor so if you’re not feeling it with one, try another. The ones I found most credible and helpful are Richard Grannon, Spartan Life Coach, Knowing the Narcissist, H. G. Tudor (he may be triggering as he’s a diagnosed narcissist) who offers the unique perspective from the mind of the narcissist (he breaks things down very well and will let you know how things will play out and what to expect, or not and how to stay safe), Lisa Romano, certified life coach, Michele Nieves, certified life coach, We Need to Talk with Kris Godinez, certified life coach, EverydayTherapist, Self-care Haven with Shahida Arabi, author and psychologist and Kim Saeed, certified life coach. Many also offer coaching for a fee and online courses and/or toolkits which are free or with a fee. As far as books, if your trauma isn’t to the point where your long and short term memory have been affected and have tanked, you may be ok with reading books (sometimes we don’t realize how much damage has been done until we try to learn something or retain information, such as reading a page in a book). Audiobooks are a great alternative if you experience difficulty. Psychopath Free and also Whole Again by Jackson Mackenzie are gold standard reads. Dana Morningstar’s Start Here: A Crash Course in Understanding, Navigating, and Healing From Narcissistic Abuse and also Out of the FOG (Fear, Obligation, Guilt) are very good. George Simon’s In Sheep’s Clothing: Understanding and Dealing with Manipulative People is another option. Shahida Arabi’s two books are very good. Becoming the Narcissist’s Nightmare and Power-surviving and thriving after narcissistic abuse. Finding a trauma focused or trauma informed therapist is also highly recommended. You will undoubtedly be experiencing multiple symptoms of Complex PTSD or CPTSD. It differs from PTSD as it is caused by the exposure to multiple traumas, such as being with a toxic individual for months, and longer. The list of symptoms is extensive and there are many layers of damage that need to be identified and addressed. PTSD, on the other hand, is the result of a one time event such as a physical assault or auto accident. Most therapists are not trained regarding any of the Cluster B disorders (narcissism or NPD, borderline personality disorder or BPD, antisocial personality disorder or ASPD and histrionic personality disorder or HPD) so its very important that you research the providers you want to see. Seeing a therapist who is not informed can be damaging to your recovery and set you back. I mistakenly thought that the therapist I was seeing weekly for two months could help me because he specialized in treating narcissistic personality disorder. He ended up retraumatizing me and really set me back. Luckily, I was able to find a trauma focused therapist who was familiar with narcissistic personality disorder (they’re hard to find). She had worked at a woman’s shelter for 20 years so she was very familiar with the reasons one would come to a domestic abuse shelter-because they were being abused by a toxic person either emotionally, psychologically, spiritually and/or physically. Contacting a domestic abuse shelter is a great resource because they have informed staff who are familiar with resources and providers within the area and the shelter may also have therapists on site as well as treatment groups. They generally charge for these services based on ability to pay and they also accept insurance. I’m going to warn you that you will find this exhausting. The researching and securing of resources and treatment as well as all the mental work you will need to put effort into to begin and continue your recovery will be exhausting. You will not believe how much you have to live inside your head, yourself, until you start this process. It will feel like it’s taking forever and sometimes going nowhere at all. There will be good days and bad days. The enormity of your situation alone will be overwhelming once you start to awaken and be educated on just what it is that you’re dealing with and how it has affected, and will continue to, your entire being. You will feel like there’s no end in sight. You will be learning a whole new language-for real. Right now, you most likely are unsure how to even articulate what has happened to you. You will feel deep shame (embarrassment, anger, betrayal, resentment, rage, unworthiness, undeserving, that you somehow are lacking) among a ton of emotions that may seem to come out of nowhere (emotional regulation will tank for a while) and you may not recognize yourself. You will not trust others and you will not trust yourself. You will have a desperate need to feel safe and the only way you think that will happen is if you shut everyone and everything out - isolation. It’s ok to give yourself a break and refresh, reboot, but please resist marinating in your room for weeks and months on end. You will want to but you won’t grow if you hang out in that current comfort zone. Your new normal will not be forever. As you recover and continue to grow in the knowledge and newfound skill sets, you will begin to get your self confidence back. Baby steps. That’s ok. The journey will be worth it. It is soooooo worth it! You are so worth it! You will never be the same, but you will be better. Be kind to yourself and forgive yourself for not knowing what you didn’t know. They’re masters of deceit and disguise. Most people don’t live in that world so it’s hard to wrap your head around their motivations, especially when they want you to believe they love you and are committed to you. You will be aware going forward, and be forewarned that once you’re able to recognize these manipulative behaviors and tactics, you will see them everywhere. Love yourself enough to reject what does not serve you. You are allowed to set healthy boundaries-they come from a place of power and self love. Honor your healing journey for it is the most important work you will do for yourself. We are all in this together. Remember that. It’s powerful. We’re powerful. ❤️
