PDF Editor FAQ

What if your parents choose your future? I’m 14, & I want to do modelling because it’s something that makes me happy, but my parents wanted me to be a lawyer, which I could do, but not something I want to do for the rest of my life.

Modeling is ok, but it is very short-lived. And I think what your parents are attempting is for you to pick a well paying career so you might enjoy a degree of prosperity and security.Modeling, while it’s a fine side line, the pay is very low unless you make the connections necessary. But nothing is guaranteed. Do your very best while you are in school. Think about what professional position you could be happy doing. The arts would drive your parents crazy. The Arts include literature – including poetry, novels and short stories, and epic poetry; performing arts – among them music, dance, and theatre; and visual arts – including drawing, painting, photography, ceramics, sculpting, and architecture – the art of designing and constructing buildings.Performing arts may include dance, music, opera, theatre and musical theatre, magic, illusion, mime, spoken word, puppetry, circus arts, performance art, recitation and public speaking. There is also a specialized form of fine art, in which the artists perform their work live to an audience. The visual arts are art forms such as ceramics, drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, design, crafts, photography, video, filmmaking, and architecture. Many artistic disciplines (performing arts, conceptual art, textile arts) involve aspects of the visual arts as well as arts of other types.Communication Arts includes graphic design, advertising, photography, illustration and interactive media.Media arts, as defined by the National Endowment for the Arts, includes screen-based projects presented via film, television, radio, audio, video, the Internet, interactive and mobile technologies, video games, transmedia storytelling, and satellite as well as media-related printed books, catalogues, and journals. And that’s just to Start… My home state has one of the most influential school for design. RISD - Rhode Island School of Design RISD

Is a musical theatre or drama degree worth it?

My short answer is YES! To really answer this question I would like “it” to be defined. Let’s take senario 1. Is a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts worth the Time? That will depend on your age. For a young adult, still living with family, newly graduated from high school, Associate of Arts, or the 2 year degree is broken down into about 60 credits, or 20 classes of 3 credits, each, about half are the general studies or required general knowledge, english, math, science, computer literacy, health, writing, and so on.. the other %, maybe 30% or 40, or 50 depending on the state, is your major. For musical theatre, this means, ballet, dance, drama, music theory, instrument, voice and diction, public speaking, stage makeup, stage craft, nutrition, an athletic coarse, art foundations, art history or other electives which satify either your requirements for the degree, or the categories you need according to the guidance counselor. In my case, I took more dance classes than I needed to satisfy my degree, so I have extra elective credits on my trascript. I studied world dance, like cultural diversity, afro haitian/cuban, modern, ballroom, and creative movement, improvisation and composition. I started out as a Musical Theatre Major, and then ended up majoring in dance, and then back to music, and dropping acting. I ended up modeling as a career. So… yes, I say any degree will set you up on a path toward success, it doesn’t really matter what you get it in, as much as completeing it will open doors and elevate your status, setting you apart from other job applicants. Now, If you compare a science degree like STEM, science, technology, engineering or math, I will say not worth passing up on a growing industry. Now, if you want to produce TV or Film, yes, getting a masters in filmmaking, can help you land a job at a TV station, newsroom, or cable tv program or channel, as there are so many new niche channels. So… creative expression, is a valueable skill, even if you end up in sales. I am back in college in my late 30’s as a wildlife biology/zoology major. You can dual major. The other factors which will help you decide how well a Performing Arts degree will serve you, is what institution is it, and do you have financial aid, a partial or full scholarship, or prepaid. So, NYU for example vs. NSU, NewYorkUniversity (SunyPurchase) weigh the prestige vs. the networking opportunities, vs. the cost of living. I toured the building in 2000, and elected to pass. I thought the campus was lacking green space. I am a nature gal. Now, Nova Southestern University in Davie FL, last time I checked online the cost per credit hour was about 500usd in state tuition. Now, a private arts college like DMAC, Digital Media Arts College in Boca Raton was $400/credit. So… If you are into 3D renderings and want to design video game plots, you need color theory, and drawing 1 and 2, etc. So I consider myself a mixed medium designer. I am interested in industrial design as a hobby. So my DMAC advisor reminded me that I need the fundamentals. It is more cost effective for me to take them for $170/credit at a community college. I did get a pell grant 1 year, Fafsa, $5800 but I had an issue to resolve before it can be available. So there is Institional Grants, meaning department specific sponsoring, like your Dean or Deapartment head can authorize a tuition credit to your registration, or the financial aid office can apply the colleges funds, or federal, or private scholarships that you apply to like with an essay and work samples. So… if it is free, I say go for it, if you have the interest. Now if you are deciding between pre-med and acting, I would say, go for the career that will help you financially, like nursing, or even education. If you are like off the charts, talented, and you know it, and you want a lifestyle in the public eye, then choose mass communications, journalism, or you know- a humanities. I needed to dance, I was athletic, I was driven, and now I write songs, and I tell stories. As an artist, I have picked up photography. You can take a class or 2 that interests you on the side of your backup plan, like accounting major, arts minor, or just pop into an acting class and do a play. Some colleges structure their programs differently, at MDCC Miami Dade College, I could take voice, musical theatre, jazz, and gymnastics, without approval. In Broward College, you had to audition to gain admittance, and in FIU Florida International University, Dance was completely separate from Music and from Acting, there was zero overlap, you had to pick 1 track. So as a musical theatre major, I left FIU and went to NWSA, now New World School of the Arts College, had Dance or Fine Visual Art, or Musical Theatre, and I mistakenly enrolled in Dance, and again had to leave. So… I am a musical theatre producer, but not in the broadway style, I make dance music and ballads, for film, not stage anymore. So… I only regret, not taking more classes, like Reason, and Broadcasing, so I am back in school. I am taking anatomy, and I love animals, so I take vocational things, like legal secretary, I wrote animal rights lobbying essays, and also I have 2 songs that hint about animal ethics, so I marry my passions. You can be a psychologist, and perform a family sit com, like Mayan from Big Bang Theory, she is a PHD in neuroscientist, a vegan author chef cook book, and an actress/comedian. I mean, she is a genius. I don’t want you to set up to struggle. You can do more than 1 thing, multiple streams of income. I need to know more about what hobbies you have, to really know if an Arts degree is necessary. I was a late bloomer, I needed the coaching. Some young talent are already marketable and trained, like Celine Dion. Knowledge is never a waste of time. Now… I was dedicated, but I also was exploring. If you are just curious, you never really know how an experience will affect you. When you are young, that is the time to try new things. I am in a different stage in my career now. Never hold on to limiting or negative beliefs. I love being in the studio. I still do vocal warmups. I am happy inventing ideas. I think it paid off for me, I was able to teach kids, choreograph, travel, meet people, celebrities, and gain confidence. Now I never had social anxiety, until my late 20s. I managed to never have stage fright until, for some reason my self consciousness kicked in. To be really sucessful, you have to either have a stage name, and alias, or be extremely open and have less privacy. Being a performer, you are the product. You have to sell yourself, and rely on you and only you. That one aspect of show business, I do not like. I want commertial success not fame. We think the two are the same. You can be famous and broke. You can be a ghost author, or have a penname, or behind the scenes. Branding yourself, is a disavantage to say building a company or brand. If you don’t show up, your brand is worthless. So… also how much of a people person you are will determine your outcome - introverted vs. extroverted. Most people in the industry find their balance. Do you really want to get up in front of millions of people? Do you actually have any opinions or ideas of your own? There are 2 types of performers, the leaders and the followers, like… the actress or singer who just executes, but doesn’t write their own songs or lines or pieces (Rhianna) who may do it well, and the Singer/Songwriter/playwright/author who has life experience and wants to explore ideas and has a reason driving them, that may or may not be finely executed. Like David Foster, just writes and accompanies, isn’t the star, vs. Taylor Swift who only performes her own publishings. You can do both. I mean, some people just find something they are good at that works, and they stick with it, consistency. Some people keep it moving. They make a million, then they do an indie film because they like the role, or they leave a well paying show, to start a vlog, and bomb, some people take risks. So life is risky, if you want a big house, and fancy car, than what are you willing to do to earn it? If you just want no posessions, so you can do a world tour, just you and a microphone, stand-up. I am a home body. So, the entertainment business is fun, but also competitive, and unpredicatble. If you want stability, you can teach or open a school, or start a company, or just get lucky. Now taking out a student loan to finance a degree in set design or sound and lighting, I’m not sure. Audio engineers from Full Sail Univ, seem to be content. Don’t go into debt. Income varies from week to week as an artist. If you want to be self employed, make your own schedule, freelance, whatever, then yeah… if you can handle 14 hour days on set, or constant pressure to look your best, or are a perfectionist. Sometimes I think having certain personality traits will determine if you are cut out for the arts. Do you talk alot? Or are you mostly shy, quiet, bored, or uninterested. People who dig, pick brains, are nosey, curious, inquisitive, and facinated tend to be interesting and facinating. Are you high on life or depressed? Enthusiasm, energy, excitement, cheerleading, positive vibes, I think they go a long way, talking faster, walking with a pep, smiling, being bubby, usually helps, so I think actors are master manipulators. We act a certain way to get a reaction from others. I release my works that I feel are significant, like on my own schedule. My barometer of success is inyer al, nit measured by likes or views or dollars earned. I set a goal and when I achieve it, its payoff, i have proven i can do it, and whatever i make is a bonus. Some projects take 10 years. You can be rewarded finacially. This a good time to be an artist, there are platforms to crowsource, or self publish, or flexable venues. The internet is a huge bonus, and the new cameras, and software. I set a goal to produce an album. You have to work towards your goals. If your goal is to land a broadway musical, like Cats, or Rent, you can do it, audition, be mentored, understudy. My advisor told me to work and go to school part time, not quit working to be a full time student. So I am a part time worker, and part time student. I can’t really do either fulltime. So some programs have a flexable pace, some are fixed. I am content earning less than I know I deserve, I’m not money motivated. Now, being an independent artist, we wear many hats. If you kust want to show up, rhearse oerform, go home, maybe doing the same show 7 times a week for so many months will fit in. I dont like the repitition. I always have a new project. So, if you want to be a team, some gigs run like a machine, you pop in, so your part, get your terms, and sometimes we have to hustle. My greatest hustle, was when I became a professional singer for the 1st time. My voice took a back stage to my looks. Now, I managed to get sponsored for recording studio time by individuals. I sang for them live, a sample of my songs and they contributed 100–300$ to help me hire a session pianist. That meant more to me than anything. Now my goal is to gross 250,000$ from my debut album. My production cost is between 50k-75. So If I don’t sell some downloads or advertistling or olacements or product placement, or get a label, or win an award, I might not make more than a few albums. So selling art, is a whole another game than just making it. I want to be a creative director. So I have to take graphic arts classes. You might like fan merchandising. I mean, You have to be versatile, and resourseful.A college degree is just the beginning. I have 100 songs in the piple line. You have to sit in on sessions to learn the ropes, that might be classroom experience, or just real world. What I did was causually ask follow up questions, like oh, so you played hand drims for Jlos concert, where are your recirding right now? and then I get a text to meet up at the studio while they are recording a commertial jingle, and fast forward um 8 years, i wrote a few songs for restaurants, like spontaneously. You have to daydream. Some singers can’t dance, yet. In theory you could study independently, like on youtube and the library, and join an acting group, and not go to college. But like I said Any 4 year degree will help you alot. I have responsibilities now. So my time is more valueable. You can earn as much as 1,000/hour as a talent, well unless you make it big, then its like 20,000/minute, hhhh. I don’t want to be an A-lister. I’m happy just creating alot of content, and making due with what I have. The most I earned was 76,000 in 1 year or 13,000 per month. Some months was 8,000/6,000/1000 I mean, save money for slow times. I used to spend my own money on projects, now I need OPM, other peoples money. I ask for help, volunteers, donations, interns, and operate like a not for profit. So general business skill is needed. You can get an agency without a degree. I had to take time out of college, to live alittle and work, and now I am back with more purpose. But it’s harder the older you are, because the demands on our time. Once you own a house, and all that… acting, is either paying the bills or not. I was asked to be on a bachelorette show for 800/week and i had to turn it down, i was making 1500 as a swimwear model. I had to turn down a 400/week gig teaching kids dance, so before you enroll in class, send out resumes. Take a class to gain a skill, not just to pass time, something to do. Great actors love great literature. If you read alot, you don’t really need college but you can earn more with it.There are free online coarses for credit. I disagree when Taylor Swift stated that if she left to go to college for years, people would forget about her. I think she set a bad example. Yeah she earned like lord knows 100,000,000 from 1989, and she seems really articulate and well advised. She is extremely intelligent. She didn’t need it. But… I love college, and I like my songs just as much as I like hers. I still think 1 day I will have the big break. I wasn’t ready before. Public life is not for everyone. For me, art is a taste of immortality. When you die, your degree goes with you. If you build something, set it up to outlive you. Dance is etherial, fleeting, and impermanent. That is why dancers love film so much. It mass produces a tangiable product. You cant get as rich in the service business. Do you value intangiables? A degree is an investment in yourself. If I only had 1 billion and 1 year left, I would create an edible garden, for wildlife. So you will see me in a film, echoing that fantacy. You either have a calling or you don’t.:-) ♡

What is art?

Art is a diverse range of human activities in creating visual, auditory or performing artifacts – artworks, expressing the author's imaginative or technical skill, intended to be appreciated for their beauty or emotional power. In their most general form these activities include the production of works of art, the criticism of art, the study of the history of art, and the aesthetic dissemination of art.The oldest form of art are visual arts, which include creation of images or objects in fields including painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and other visual media. Architecture is often included as one of the visual arts; however, like the decorative arts, it involves the creation of objects where the practical considerations of use are essential—in a way that they usually are not in a painting, for example. Music, theatre, film, dance, and other performing arts, as well as literature and other media such as interactive media, are included in a broader definition of art or the arts. Until the 17th century, art referred to any skill or mastery and was not differentiated from crafts or sciences. In modern usage after the 17th century, where aesthetic considerations are paramount, the fine arts are separated and distinguished from acquired skills in general, such as the decorative or applied arts.
