PDF Editor FAQ
What is a US passport?
A Passport is a Travel Document -in the form of a book, or (as of 2009) also can be in the form of a personal ID card. The Passport is only issued to Citizens of that country. Therefore a US Passport can only be issued to a US Citizen. They are valid for 5 years when issued to a child age 15 and under, or 10 years for an adult age 16 and over. A Child's passport is not renewable, while an adult's passport is (as long as it is not expired over 5 years). The Issuing Authority for a US Passport is the US Department of State Passport Agency. The main office is in Washington DC, but there are 25 Regional Offices located throughout the country.A Passport Book is required for any international travel by plane. If you are traveling by foot, car, or boat, you can use a passport Card. The passport card can not be used as a travel document for air travel internationally. In addition to being a travel document, these items can be used as a proof of citizenship, and since they also have photos, as proof of identification. Passports are Federal, not local, and therefore all passports in the US, unlike local IDs, are created the same for civilians. Passports have a specialized scan-able chip embedded in them that is, at this point, hack-proof and US Passports are considered the most technologically advanced and secure document for travel. Since they use new bio-metrics along with the chip, it is nearly impossible to make use of a stolen US passport.Passport Book pages are there for travel stamps and visas. When you enter a country by plane, you get stamped when you enter and exit the country on a open spot of a page in the book. If you need a visa to enter the country you are visiting, often one is needed before you can leave the United States and it often will take up a full Visa Page in the passport. As of January 2016, the Passport Agency no longer adds visa pages to full passports, and if you fill up your book, regardless of it's expiration date, you will need to get a renewal of the passport. If you need a new passport or need to replace a lost, damaged or stolen passport, but are not in a hurry, there are passport acceptance clerks at most post offices in the country, though personally I recommend going to a Court House, country or state building or library whenever possible instead of the post office. Here is a link to search for locations near you that can process the passport paperwork for you: Where to Apply for a Passport NationwideIf you are renewing you can use the government site to help you process - travel.state.govIf you are in a hurry you can use one of the regional offices with an appointment (call 877-487-2778), or I would recommend a 3rd party that can expedite the process for you. They are more expensive but knowledgeable and very fast. I recommendwww.rushmypassport.comObtaining a passport can be a frustrating and time-consuming process, so when you get one, take care of it, and don't lose it. Also, and this is from 8 years of experience - do NOT keep it in your back pocket and don't get it wet.
I’ll travel from the US to Hong Kong, with a connection in Doha. My passport will expire soon (within 6 months). Will I have any problem boarding?
OP Statement#1: I’ll travel from the US to Hong Kong, with a connection in Doha. You should also do some research about the visa requirements for US citizens abroad. Some countries/territories require a US passport holder to acquire the tourist visa in advance and/or the transit visa may be required in some countries/territories. You need to be extra cautious about the awareness in this regard as well. I can give you the answer to this specific statement. The visa policy of Doha — A US passport holder does not require the transit visa in DOHA. You may just transit through the territory with just your US passport, as long as you have an onward itinerary to Hong Kong. The visa policy of Hong Kong — A US passport holder is granted the 90 days visa waiver program for this territory. You may just arrive in the territory with just your US passport for only the purpose of tourism/business enquiries.[Note: Please, check out the link to understand the visa requirements: Visa requirements for United States citizens - Wikipedia]OP statement#2: My passport will expire soon within 6 months. The standard international regulation is all travelers must have the passport validity at least or beyond 6 months before the expiry date.A US passport usually takes in between 8–12 weeks to process before the passport renewal with the $110 fee from the US department of State. The expedited process may speed up the renewal passport in between 3–4 weeks, but there is an additional $60 fee on top from the original charge.I suggest you should get your US passport sorted out as your top priority at this stage.Q1: Will I have any problem boarding?YES, any airlines will deny your boarding at the check-in counter before walking through the airport security in the first place under this circumstance. You should raise the awareness that all legal documents must be in place before the international travel.
What is the process to apply passport through online?
Thanks for the A2A. As always, since this question does not ask for which country, I will start by making it clear that I am an expert only in US Passport expediting - Not other countries.First, is this for a New, Lost, Stolen, Damaged, or Child's Passport? If so, you can apply for 3rd party services online that can help you but they are designed to assist you if you are in a hurry.I am often amazed how many people sign up for a website like RushMyPassport.com Expedited US Passports & Travel Visas who have no intention to travel anytime in the future. It is a RUSH service and it clearly indicates it is more expensive. So if you are in a hurry, use them or someone like them- they are great services. BUT - you can only sign up online and fill out paperwork online. The Department of State still requires physical paperwork you will have to send through the company you are using and you can NOT bypass the requirements to get your documents sealed up at a local Passport Acceptance Agent (generally a local Post office or Court House). If you are looking to bypass the requirement of getting your documents sealed at a local clerk's office, then when you are within 2 weeks of your travel date you can set up an appointment at a local Department of State Regional Passport Office (there are about 25 of them in the US) and go there physically in person. Otherwise, you do not get a passport. It's either the post office (or equivalent) or the Passport agency - either way you are going somewhere in person - that is the law.If you are looking for a Name Change, Renewal or Second Passport:You will not have to get anything witnessed in person. If you are in a hurry you can still use a 3rd party expediter or the passport agency. Or, if you are not in a hurry, you can go to travel.state.gov - you will find the paperwork and instructions there to do this on your own. Or the local post office has the physical papers you can fill out by hand, but they are often not very helpful with renewals.Regardless, you will still have to get your paperwork shipped to the government office (or 3rd party courier) to process. In the US, you can not get a passport online. That is not an option. If you have any questions, let me know - I've been doing this for 8 years, I probably have heard it before.
