My boyfriend was on a film shoot and I was alone in the hospital after delivery.We had just moved from a small daylight basement apartment to this gorgeous 1920’s flat in Koreatown. I had managed to unpack a part of the kitchen and put sheets on the bed before I was admitted to the hospital with pre-eclampsia.I was in the hospital for ten days. I was coming home, to my new home, with my new baby. I noticed the boxes had been removed from the back porch.I walked into a completely unpacked house. She had unpacked everything, hung pictures, hung curtains. There was an orchid on the dining room table and an organized stack of packages and baby gifts in the living room. She’s a professional production designer so it was beautiful.I started crying.She asked if there was anything else I needed. I suddenly noticed I was in pain, so she picked up my pain pills and some diapers from the pharmacy. I gave her a big hug and she left.This was the single kindest, nicest thing anyone has ever done for me.After she left, I popped a Vicodin and ordered Thai Food.Spicy food, Yay!She had put a white duvet on my bed and there was this extremely tall, handmade doll on the fluffy pillow. I laid on that clean, white bed and nursed my beautiful baby. I watched some Hulu on the laptop but really, mostly, I stared at my daughter.My mother showed up the next morning, but I had that first night alone at home snuggling with my baby.

CanadaLook closely at these pictures:they are from a Canadian chain called Swiss Chalet (nothing Swiss about them)… that’s just white meat on white bread, that’s it, no condiments, nothing (it comes with a packet of mayonnaise in case you’re feeling bold). The first picture is sliced/square bread too, not even a bun. It comes with plain gravy and boiled flavorless vegetables. And the plainest fries you can imagine. And this chain is wildly popular. Because the alternatives are worse. I myself have ordered the bottom one numerous times!Canadian BBQ is steak + fire… no seasoning, no sauce. Add a little salt and pepper, if you dare, at the table.English Canadian food is a more boring version of British food.French Canadian food - everything from France completely forgotten, only poutine (fries + gravy + cheese curds) remains… which I actually like, but that’s besides the point.Haute French cuisine… Canadian style:The only good Canadian food:the buttertart, which is delicious.
