I’ve seen some amazing shows by accident over my decades of concert-going. I was at Lenny Kravitz’s very first tour (Let Love Rule), Nine Inch Nails on their (well, Trent’s) first tour (Pretty Hate Machine) and a wet behind the ears (but incredible live band) Maroon 5 opening for Jessica Simpson.All unbelievable, but none that can really compare to the time I bought tickets to see Huey Lewis and The News on their “Sports” tour at the Omni in Atlanta. I got there early as I always had being a teenager at the time. Anxiously awaiting seeing Huey and the boys rip it up when the opening band walks onstage with all of the Omni lights still on full blast like it’s just a sound check or something. No announcements. No pomp and circumstance.The seats around the outer rim of auditorium were noticeably empty along with the floor. There were though, maybe, 100 people with floor tickets who absolutely knew who he was and acted accordingly, jumping and pumping their fists in the air.Slowly and one by one, the band walks out. Then this man I had never heard of by the name of Stevie Ray Vaughn walks out with his guitar (and a big Texas style hat) to join his band, Double Trouble. Not knowing who he was, I wasn’t familiar with any of his songs, but I could have caught flies in my mouth as I sat slack jawed the entire performance that was full of blistering guitar solos and funky blues swing riffs.Needless to say, while I tried my best to enjoy the Huey Lewis show afterwards, I spent the entire concert trying to process what I had just seen and wondering when the Turtle’s record stores were going to open the next day so I could make sure I didn’t make that mistake again.

On February 11, 2006, U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney shot someone in the face.This event - the vice president nearly killing someone - seems to have completely faded from the public’s consciousness.Cheney was on a quail hunting trip with high-dollar campaign contributors, including 78 year-old Harry Whittington. Whittington, a lawyer based in Austin, Texas, joined Cheney on a South Texas ranch owned by lobbyist Katharine Armstrong.[1][1][1][1]The vice president, an experienced hunter, was carrying a 28 gauge shotgun.[2][2][2][2] He fired at his quarry without realizing Whittington had appeared near his line of sight. The Austin lawyer was hit with bird shot in the face, neck, and chest.[3][3][3][3]Witnesses at first blamed Whittington for re-appearing at Cheney’s side without proper warning, and this fact was highlighted in the first public reports.[4][4][4][4] Later investigations by the local sheriff ruled the shooting an accident, and no charges were filed, other than a warning citation issued to Cheney for not having a game stamp on his hunting license.[5][5][5][5]However, others pointed out that Cheney failed to follow basic safety rules.This violates two basic rules of hunting safety, says Ralph Stuart, the editor of Shooting Sportsman, a hunting magazine. The first is the shooter's obligation to ensure that he has a clear line of fire before pulling the trigger. The second is the "blue-sky rule," meaning that a hunter shouldn't fire until he can see blue sky beneath a bird, thus greatly reducing the chances of hitting another hunter or dog."Quail often fly low and demand lower shots," Stuart points out, but that makes it "doubly important" that the shooter is aware of what's between him and the bird and just beyond.[6][6][6][6]Cheney was heavily criticized at the time for his office’s handling of the shooting’s public disclosure. It took almost a day for it to be made public, and the first information was reported by a local Texas newspaper in Corpus Christi, a city near the ranch. Katharine Armstrong had called them.[7][7][7][7]President George W. Bush was not told that Cheney fired the shot in the first report he received on the shooting.[8][8][8][8]Whittington’s injuries were far more serious than initially reported. The Washington Post detailed the doctors' efforts:The shotgun sprayed upward of 200 birdshot pellets at Whittington, causing scores of wounds. His facial lacerations were the most dramatically bloody, but the injuries to his neck and chest were the most serious.Four days after being hit, the birdshot near his heart prompted it to beat erratically, forcing him back into the intensive care unit. Doctors said Whittington suffered a mild heart attack; he thinks it was something less, a heart "event."Still, the injuries were more dire than previously disclosed. Whittington suffered a collapsed lung. He underwent invasive exploratory surgery, as doctors probed his vital organs for signs of damage. The load from Cheney's gun came close to, but didn't damage, the carotid artery in his neck.A rupture could have been fatal, particularly since it took the better part of an hour to transport him from the vast Armstrong ranch to the Kingsville hospital.[9][9][9][9]This photo of Whittington was taken one week after the shooting. Shortly after the shooting, the Austin lawyer actually apologized to Cheney’s family “for all they had to go through this past week,” and has recently said he does not mind the lack of a personal apology.[12][12][12][12]As Whittington said, ten years after the event:"He never did need to apologize. It was an accident," he told the Daily News. I watched the footage and if by “bomb” he means means “it was like someone detonated an nuke the explosion was so huge” then yeah, it does look like a bomb.But the reports are this was the detonation of some 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate. So that sounds like a bomb given that ammonium nitrate is something somewhat commonly used in a bomb. But if the implication is someone set it off, ammonium nitrate has this as hazard code.It’s not flammable, but it is an oxidiser and will explode under heat and pressure. In fact it’s kind of one of those substances that must be handled like a Faberge Egg because this is what happened when about 11.300 tonnes of it got stored improperly in a factory in China.And it’s one of the more infamous substances for doing this. One of the regular hazards of operating a fertiliser plant is whole batches of nitrate salts exploding because staff forgot to store them carefully enough and they started to decompose.Ammonium nitrate disasters - WikipediaAdd to this the explosion followed an accident at a fireworks factory (another high-risk-of-things-exploding industry), and you are practically asking for an unplanned pyrotechnics display.Did it look like a bomb? Technically yes because ammonium nitrate is an explosive if not properly handled and allowed to break down or get in contact with anything combustible. And if you’re unfamiliar with the physics behind explosions of this magnitude, then seeing a mushroom cloud out of the blue is going to at least seem like a nuke just went off.But if the implication was it was some kind of terrorist attack.
