For around six years between the late 1960s and 1970s, the serial killer known as ‘Zodiac’ terrorised Northern California. He remains unidentified.Zodiac (2007), David Fincher’s understated, sumptuously atmospheric and unnerving thriller charts the story of the eponymous killer’s manhunt.Although it is ostensibly a taut procedural about the said manhunt, ultimately, Zodiac is a meticulously crafted tale of obsession and how the pursuit for the killer entirely consumes the lives of the film’s three principal players.It is only fitting then that the film is directed by David Fincher, a man who is consumed by his fervent devotion to authenticity.Fincher had constantly been a stickler for details, but for Zodiac, he went to unprecedented lengths.When Fincher was commissioned to direct the project, based on two Robert Graysmith books – the latter being a cartoonist (Jake Gyllenhaal in the film) who was obsessed with the case – he suggested that the script needed to be revamped.“I said I won’t use anything in this book that we don’t have a police report for,” Fincher told The New York Times. [1][1][1][1]So Fincher, screenwriter James Vanderbilt and one of the producers researched the case thoroughly for 18 months – they interviewed people connected to the case and went over all the relevant documents they could get their hands on.Graysmith said Fincher discovered evidence that wasn’t brought to light during the original investigation – “He outdid the police. My hats off to them.”Further, the producers hired a private investigator to locate one of the survivors, Mike Mageau.And all of that was prior to filming.Once filming began, Fincher took drastic steps to ensure authenticity.The murder victims’ costumes were meticulously recreated from forensic evidence that was lent to the production.[2][2][2][2]Trees had to be helicoptered into the Lake Berryessa location, as the area had changed substantially since 1969, and Fincher wanted it to resemble the murder site as closely as possible.Because he wanted the film to be as accurate as possible, Fincher decided not to depict any of the alleged Zodiac murders for which there were no surviving victims or witnesses.Hair was digitally added to the close-ups of Gyllenhaal’s knuckles as he draws or holds letters. Fincher felt that Gyllenhaal’s hands “were too hairless and pretty”.To throw off viewers about the identity of Zodiac, he is played by three actors: John Lacy, Richmond Arquette, and Bob Stephenson.In order to save time and have complete control in the way he wanted to recreate the murders, Fincher wanted all the blood to be digitally added in later. It wore down his actors; Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey, Jr. and Mark Ruffalo.Gyllenhaal was reduced to tears. Downey, Jr. said he wanted to “garrotte” Fincher. “I think I’m a perfect person to work for him because I understand gulags.”Then there’s the apocryphal story of Downey, Jr. leaving mason jars filled with his urine around set as a form of protesting the brutal working hours.But Downey, Jr. also called him “the smartest man in the room.”All that effort, all that passion and dedication led to something truly extraordinary – Zodiac is a masterpiece; I think it's Fincher’s magnum opus.A remarkable achievement, Zodiac demands multiple repeat viewings – to both suffuse oneself with its rich story but also to admire the meticulous and breathtaking level of craft on display.Zodiac sees one of the modern masters at the absolute height of his powers. There’re two types of hand-built cars: one built by your neighbor in his garage using parts he salvaged from a junk yard; one built by a team of extremely well trained technicians each making ten times more than a McDonald manager.I assume you don't mean the former.Mass produced cars using automated equipment (i.e. robots), even when extraordinarily stringent quality assurance procedures are in effect, are build only within a certain degree of quality consistency. Some are built slightly better than average, while some slightly worse, but in general they follow a normal distribution. For a high-end brand, the range (if statistically rigorous, variance) can be very small, but there are still differences. No one does anything as long as one car satisfies all quality standards — even it is worse than average, it does not fail and will not be rejected. Being above a minimum acceptable value (or below a maximum acceptable value) is good enough; it's just that for a high-end brand that minimum acceptable value may be very high (or that maximum acceptable value may be very low).Yet, those well-paid, highly specialized technicians in the ultra-luxury-brand factory can, and do, fine-tune every single car until whenever they feel satisfactory. Yes, there will still be units better than average and some worse, but every unit has been optimized, in a prestigious, manual fashion. Yes, I agree that for those factories, a full system of automated equipment is not economically sustainable, and this is absolutely one factor. Nonetheless, the most valuable (and profitable) idea that the hand building process is to convey the that:You are looking at a car which is NOT a product of some random statistics of machine output, but rather a piece of art that every one of us at least attempted to build to a masterpiece.This is what a project manager on the Maybach production team in Sindelfingen told me when I was an intern in a factory building C-Class. Being skittish could involve many issues, as skittish in being lively or frisky in action and being capricious. Also, it could be people with variable and fluctuating thoughts and actions. It could also involve being easily frightened and resistive to act, like a skittish horse. It could also point to being coy and bashful and marked by extreme caution and being wary.I am going to take this opportunity to relate what are the REAL CONTENTS of all artistic items and how people chose in which direction to look at an object or a pleasant situation, and how the associated human emotions are generated and projected.All art outside a human mind always needs an engineering structure, be it marble or wood to sculpt or fiberglass or plaster of Paris to mold, or canvas and frame to paint on a few colors, or indeed it could be wind or string instruments to make noise with. It could be a dress, a necklace, some colorful lipstick, a diamond ring, or a piece of furniture or a palace. It is all engineering structure, and if one hides an artistic masterpiece, all that remains hidden, is the engineering part holding up the structure. All the art and emotional contents will vanish immediately. There is no art in a hidden work of art, only engineering remains active.The emotions that are initiated when an observer is in the presence of a work of art and SEES it, or HEARS it, or FEELS the texture, the emotions generated at that moment are only due to the past culture and education of the observer himself as an individual, being intoxicated by the magnitudes and the rate of change of the outlines and pencil or ink drawing and by the rate of change of the same hew of colour or rate of change due to the different colours or due to the rate of change of noise and let us be kinder and call it sound that makes music. THE EMOTIONAL ART IS IN THE OBSERVER AND NOT IN THE STRUCTURE. What is in the structure is purely engineering functions. All this is gone when one hides an artistic object and what is left in a person's mind is simply a memory of what he saw and experienced which we must surely classify as a hallucination or a drug effect. All artists are in fact drug traffickers and all they do it sell and deal with drugged emotions in people around them. That is the way they make their living selling complex drugged and emotional projections from a very simple engineering structure, all done tacitly with a purpose to achieve an aim!Now let us take the flying process. The engineering structure is a MUST and it is imperative to always include it, as there will be no flying whatsoever without my engineering.Associated with the engineering structure we must include the aerodynamics so that the engineering structure can fly. That is not enough and we must include artistic functions as comfortable seats, an artistic layout inside and outside the aircraft surface and to cut it short, AS PEOPLE DO NOT APPRECIATE THE ENGINEERING STRUCTURE ON WHAT THEIR LIVES DEPEND, they prefer to look at the lures and the baits associated with flying through colorful brochures, and surface paintings including the colorful gold-braided uniforms of pilots and flight attendants. All the engineering structure that generates the SAFETY OF THE PILOT AND CREW AND PASSENGERS AND ALL THOSE PEOPLE ON THE GROUND is hidden and covered by an artistic superficial function. People enjoy and they like to be drugged so that they feel emotional and in the case of flying, using artistic functions is a pretty good method of how to bait and lure people to do it. Even women doll themselves up with artistic functions before they take a flight, as it makes them feel better, similar to the uniformed pilot and his flight attendants, they all insist on covering the safety of the structural contribution to a superficial artistic feature which may add to the emotional comfort of the pilot, crew, and passengers but it does not add one once of safety to the aircraft when it flies!But, but, but, but , people are no fools, and they have a memory with a fast fetch cycle and they remember the past, They remember the Concorde Crash, the Aloha incident, the long glide of the Gimli Glider, the disappearance of the Malaysian flight, the Hudson water landing, the recent two crashes of the 737 MAX and many others in military and civilian air transport.Irrespective of the dress and makeup one wear before a flight, to make one feel good and the artistic furnishing and the superficial painting on the surface of an aircraft, deep down in the human mind there is that fetch memory cycle which will always hunt any passengers and pilot and crew. Flying is a path that walks too close to death and so many euphemistic salesmanships is used to alleviate the emotional feelings that the memory “fetch cycle” generates when we become conscious of past incidents. THIS IS A VERY NORMAL AND A HEALTHY HUMAN MIND WHICG WEIGHS UP THE SITUATION IT IS IN. To be afraid is normal, and not to be afraid or at least concerned is only for FOOLS and very foolhardy and it is only an act one plays.Modern life is what it is and we must accept to live it and we are pushing our body and mind to face dilemmas which the human body was not meant to do as much as we do now, living a modern city life where so many dangers surround us.The best formula to use to face life is to know oneself. Hence, if one feels like feeling better by putting on a colorful artistic dress or makeup or a hairstyle, JUST GO AND DO IT knowing that you are doing it to show off a little, to feel better and because the occasion demands it........just never fool yourself and simply take the risk that will make you feel better. Now one must accept that putting on a diamond ring or a low cut dress or a pair of high heels or wearing a tiara on one's head or driving a Mercedes rather than a small 70 cc motorcycle does not make one any better............IT ONLY FEELS BETTER......... but if that is necessary to anyone feel better, just do it, but know exactly and be conscious why one is doing it and never fool oneself. Just get to know human behavior in certain circumstances.With flying is attractive, it is convenient, it saves time, it has many advantages and benefits but it all comes at a price and it is not just the cost of the ticket. There are the mental cost and price that one could crash with an aircraft, a train, a car, a bicycle, even dining out one can get food poisoning. It is the life we chose to live and it is no use weighing it up, with too many details about which one has no control. One has to decide if ONE WANTS TO LIVE A MODERN LIFE OR NOT. One has to accept the payment and the price of how we now live.So my advice is that after one is drugged by the colorful artistic lures and baits that are made visible to any passenger who is to take a flight, that passenger has no more options than to miss the flight, or to blindly learn to trust the engineer that made the structure of the aircraft, his home, his car, his bus, the stairs to the aircraft, his washing machine, his mobile, his shoes, his luggage bag, his sewer and his water supplies, the roof over his head and all this food he eats on plates with forks and knives and all the other tangible guaranteed comfort inside and outside his home, including all this sport gear and the fishing rod and bait and lures, if he likes fishing for a pastime as air companies pilot and flight attendants do with their passengers.So as an art masterpiece generates the emotions within any person which lures and baits them to fly, there is no other option to follow. NEVER TAKE ANY DRUGS OR PILLS BEFORE ANY FLIGHT BUT SIMPLY LEARN TO TRUST many people:-1. The engineer who made up the structure on which you fly with the pilot, crew and other passengers. That structure will be your lifesaver and it will save your life on every normal flight you and the pilot and the crew makes. It will also save people living on the ground with their homes below the flight paths.2. The second person to trust is the Pilot, he is trained to save his own life at all costs and he will do it on every occasion irrespective of the engineering structure holds or lose its integrity, which it seldom does. The pilot like any other human being has his own silent feelings and emotions, but he follows a demanding learning procedure and is trained and prepared to even lose his own life. Through that philosophy of one doing this best to save his own life attracted by work conditions, and compensation, everyone gains!These two combined issues are what is available to ensure the safest flying possible. The Flight Engineer used to join the crew in the cockpit and him too, as the pilot and co-pilot, he too was prepared to lose his life to protect the aircraft at all costs. Unfortunately the Flight engineer who knew the aircraft better than any pilot, was sacked out of the cockpit and what now remains, is the pilot and co-pilot, while the engineer went to develop in silence away from the public eye, the reliability of the jet engine so much that to cross the oceans ONLY TWO ENGINES ARE NOW REQUIRED and if one of them fails the pilot is allowed to fly over water for three hours with one engine as that is what the engineer thinks it is best, considering the imperfect engineering materials engineers use to make the aircraft structure which is always hidden to the pilot, co-pilot crew and passengers. Like the flight engineer was sacked out of the cockpit, I would not be surprised that the pilot would soon follow suit.So one should never be ashamed to be concerned and skittish and afraid of flying =====it is a healthy mind and a healthy body that does that........ but learning to trust the engineer and the pilot is all you can do. Modern living means that everyone has to learn to trust the engineering around them and all those who operate the hidden engineering which is generally covered with an artistic, emotional and heart titillating surfaceI just do not believe that an aircraft should be painted over but it should be as in the old days, polished aluminum or perhaps fiberglass or carbon fiber which is susceptible to the sun rays, so one must paint them with protective paint, not necessarily in an artistic manner to lure and bait in passengers and hiding all the engineering structure that makes safe flying through the best 'hidden' engineering functions and good human piloting.Incidentally, I hate the fact that utilities as sewers pipes, water pipes, and electric cables, foundations of homes, all being hidden rather than shown to the public to remind them that engineers look after them all the time, even in the engineer's absence. All that is useful and comfortable and looks after us is normally covered with some useless superficial permutations of colors and outlines and selected music! Including the springing or soft seat in an airline!So when going flying, do not take any tranquilisers, but get dressed up for the occasion, be super artistic, flaunt what you’ve got, add all the make up you desire, admire it all, but close your eyes and your brain and just trust the engineer and the pilot and the flight attendants and the traffic controllers and all the radar and the hidden communications engineering systems and just think that you are in good hands being held lovingly; warmly; affectionately; fondly, between engineers and pilots and crew and traffic controllers and all the engineering equipment associated with any flight.
