What career caused you to start hating human beings?

I spent the last 10 years working in the accounting department of an organization that licensed engineers in the province of Alberta. I have never in my life encountered so many entitled, inefficient, self-important and whiny group of people as engineers. Now in all fairness, the engineers who weren't entitled cry-babies, I didn't have a lot of contact with. Those were the group who managed to figure out how to log into a website and pay their annual dues on their own. So the people I dealt with were all the ones who couldn't figure out this simple function once a year. I also dealt with all the ones who didn't think they should have to pay member dues either. So I spent entire days having conversations like this:***************Engineer: "I can't log in because I don't remember my password!"Me: "Did you click the forgot password button?"***************Engineer: "I'm leaving my job for a year to travel Europe, can I have my fees waived for the year?"Me: "No."***************Engineer: "I went on maternity leave and I didn't get my mail sent to me from the office, and I didn't pay my dues so you cancelled my membership."Me: "You will need to apply for reinstatement."Engineer: "But that could take months and it's got all these fees! I have been a member for over 10 years so you should just reverse the cancellation."Me: "If you have been a member for over 10 years, then you knew when your dues were due."Engineer: "But I had a baby! I was busy focusing on my baby!"Me: ...Engineer: "Also you didn't even give me any warning!"Me: "We sent you an invoice, then two reminders, and then we emailed you to say we would cancel your membership if you didn't pay your dues."Engineer: "You should have phoned me!"Me: "We have 85,000 members and there are only three people who handle this function for all of them. Plus we have already contacted you four times before we cancelled your membership. I'm afraid you will have to apply for reinstatement."Engineer: "This is bullshit, I've been a member for years and I had a baby and you're punishing me for that. I want to talk to your supervisor."Me: "One moment please."(And then the engineer in charge, who set out the policy and insisted we enforce it, would then make an exception for this non-exceptional engineer.)********We would reduce fees for members who were unemployed, returning to full time schooling (in an engineering related discipline), on parental leave or who had become disabled. There was an application form on the back of the invoice with specific instructions on how to apply for each program and how much the annual dues would be reduced by and for how long. It was a one page form, so not that complicated.Engineer: "I applied for a reduction in annual dues for parental leave and you returned it to me saying I wasn't eligible?"Me: "Yes, you applied for and received that reduction last year. Parental leave lasts one year."Engineer: "But I'm staying home to raise my children! And you're punishing me for that!"Me: "No, you are making a choice to stay home and raise your children. While that is an admirable one, you don't need your membership in order to do so. If you wish to maintain your membership you will have to do it at the full rate. Also the application form also explicitly states your dues will only be reduced once. In bold. Twice."Engineer: "This is bullshit I want to talk to your manager."Me: "One moment please."(And then the engineer in charge, who set out the policy and insisted we enforce it, would then make an exception for this non-exceptional engineer.)************Hey, I'm not a total hardass. We did have some tough luck cases and I even went to bat for some of them when I felt they needed a hand. Like the one whose membership was cancelled because they were going through chemotherapy and everything kind of fell to shit for them while that happened. "Absolutely sir, let me just reverse this cancellation for you." Or the guy who lost his job and took a job at Home Depot to make ends meet. (While he did not technically qualify for a reduction in fees, he was clearly actively seeking employment and would do what it takes, and it's nice to give people a break sometimes).**************By the time I left this job, I didn't just hate engineers, I pretty much hated people in general.**************A year later, I ended up taking a position as a receptionist at a mental health clinic. While there are lots of regular folks here seeing therapists to deal with some tough stuff life has handed them, there are also a LOT of people who come here to receive regular injections of medications because it's the only way they comply with their medication schedule. Many are ordered to attend our clinic through a Community Treatment Order, and if they don't show up for their appointments then a warrant is issued and then the police go and pick them up and force them to either come here or to a hospital where they are forced to take their medication. That sounds intense but if they don't take that medication, they genuinely do become a danger to themselves and others. In other words, a lot of the people I see here every day are really, really sick. Some of them have just no grip on reality anymore. And I've been screamed at, threatened, seen people throw chairs around and smash their fists and head into the walls. Never a dull day, particularly on a full moon. And yet, not a one of them have been as bad as dealing with those engineers. Maybe it's because they really need help. And maybe it's because my role is just to smile, and greet them warmly, and confirm their appointments, and reassure them that someone will see them soon. Sometimes it's just to smile and listen to their stories, even when the stories make no sense whatsoever. They aren't supposed to touch us, but I have hugged a few who couldn't stop crying (after asking if I could of course).I have had a few people comment on how natural I am with the patients, and how good I am at de-escalating situations as they arise. Even some of the patients have given me little cards to say that I make them feel special. I've had a few staff ask me how I'm so good with the patients and how I stay so calm even when they are freaking out. It's quite easy actually. These are people that are ill and genuinely need help and sometimes I can provide that help. And when I can't I can find someone who can. And then they are grateful, mostly anyway. They have made me start believing in people again. That ultimately we are all just fighting some kind of battle, and it's important to always be kind.Except to engineers of course. Fuck those guys.
