PDF Editor FAQ

How is Stephen Hawking alive in spite of his illness? Does he experience a different type of ALS that gradually disables him, or is there another reason? Doctors gave him a life expectancy of two years.

It's simple. He cheats. I am the same way, having gone on a ventilator after approximately 3 years after diagnosis. Even after his tracheotomy he was able to breathe through it on his own for a while (I experienced the same). But eventually he was using a small mechanical air pump to deliver a constant amount of air to his lungs in a constant number of breaths per minute. I have been living the same way since 2008 (in fact it was almost exactly 6 years to the day that I came home from the hospital following a choking incident which forced my decision to trake). It's sensible to get a trake even before breathing capacity (diaphragm function) gets critically low for a simple concept called "pulmonary toilet". Basically it means access to the airway in the case of blockage (choking). With the tracheotomy window (access via the tube sticking out of neck), the blockage can either be cleared there or air can be given while the blockage above the tracheotomy is cleared."Pulmonary toilet" is important for people with a variety of MND spectrum conditions which affect the 8 individual muscles commonly known as the tongue. During chewing or even daily normal speech, the back of the tongue guards the back of the airway against unintentional inhalation of excess spittle or food particles. When it fails, it creates a choking incident. This is what happened to me, nearly killing me. That day, after consultation with my family and my medical team (local doctors: a general practice, pulmonologist, and neurologist - all brilliant), I agreed to schedule a tracheotomy. That turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life...Professor Hawking is very fortunate in that he is in a country which believes in taking care of its citizens. He also has multiple volunteer caretakers in the form of Cambridge grad students. Although my own contributions to Humanity pale in comparison to those of Professor Hawking (to say the least), I have managed to be of service to the ALS Community. Those small contributions are, I hope, recompense for the taxpayer expense for my 24/7 caretakers (something very few Americans in my situation can have).

How can I find a good, reliable healthcare professional in India for the diagnosis and care of type 1 or LADA diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes is very common in India. One can have access to basic diabetes supply like insulin and blood glucose strips (testing strips ) from anywhere with the prescription of diabetologist. Now when it comes to professional care, one thing that needs to be mentioned is that if one is financially sound , getting a super good heathcare professional is not a big deal,if not, then a person is limited to access basic supply only, unfortunately. Good doctors, dieticians and trainers are available all across the country.Insulin pumps, continuous glucose monitoring machine (CGM) have been launched in market and i have used both insulin pump and multiple daily injections. Only difference is pump and cgm makes it more easy to maintain healthy glucose levels while on multiple daily injections you need to regulate insulin regularly in accordance to daily workout and carbohydrate intake along with regular blood sugar measurements(2–3 times a day or on alternate days according to body types). What limits Indians to get good diabetes care is that supplies are really expensive . even if one can’t afford expensive medical gadgets, it is possible to maintain a healthy lifestyle with a bit of dedication, perseverance and consistency.PGIMERs and AIIMS provide treatment with a subsidy on expensive items. Once a doctor from PGIMER Chandigarh told me that Karnataka government provides free insulin pumps to type 1 diabetics. I wish this had been possible all over the subcontinent.Hope this helps you! ~All the best.

How has meditation changed your life?

I tried meditation for 7 days and here’s what happened.I will be honest, I have never tried meditation in my life.I never felt the need or the motivation to do it.A lot of people advised me to give it a try and see the results.I have read books, blogs and watched numerous videos on techniques.I am aware of the process but never knew when I will do it.But, something terribly went wrong in the last 2 months.I was going through a lot of stress – work, personal projects, deadlines, and personal life.I was working for late nights, had no morning routine, depended a lot on junk food and did no exercise.I was thinking I would be more productive if I just focused on my work.It didn’t work.I was feeling tired throughout the day, couldn’t focus and barely did anything for relaxation.Sometime around last week, I couldn’t sleep the whole night.I kept thinking. What’s going wrong? Why am I failing? Why am I not able to achieve my goals? Why I am not satisfied with myself? Why am I not enjoying my daily life? These questions kept swirling in my mind until it went blank. It was 5:30 am.Darkness was fading away and the light was taking over.I thought this is it.Enough is enough.I have to take responsibility.I went for a run. Came back after 45 mins. I took a shower and got dressed.I sat down in a corner of my house, closed my eyes, and started focusing on my breaths. I sat there in complete silence and tried to observe my thoughts.I saw the utter chaos my mind was experiencing. I was worried about every small thing in the world. I felt like I was in the middle of a battleground.I tried to trace back the origin of every thought and find out why I was thinking this way. When I opened my eyes, I was it was only 5 mins but it felt like an hour.I felt good. I had taken the first step. It’s been 7 days now, and I want to say that meditation didn’t solve any of my problems. In fact, it has no relation to the things I was going through. But, it is helping stay calm in tense situations and think from multiple perspectives. I am having better sleep and I am able to focus my energy on things that matter the most. The morning ritual is helping me a lot. When I wake up at 5 am and go for a run, and I see almost no one the roads, I feel I am ahead. When I come back, take shower, meditate and have a mega breakfast, I feel I have conquered the world. I feel I am pumped up to take every challenge that comes on my way during the day and determined to complete whatever I decide to do.By the time I leave for work, I feel I have done which I was struggling to do all my life. I feel like a winner. I feel unstoppable.
