PDF Editor FAQ

Autism runs in my family and many of my close relatives have it. I show many symptoms of it. One of the symptoms of autism is a speech delay, though I had no problems learning to speak. Is there a chance of me having a form of autism like Asperger's?

Hi Parker -I can tell you from my experience, that when we are questioning if it is possible that we ourselves are autistic, we can be misled by comparing ourselves to others who are autistic. This happens for a number of reasons. We don’t really understand how vast a spectrum autism is. Each autistic person’s brain is unique. No two people experience or express autism the same - Neurotypical brains do not have this degree of variation. We do not know ourselves or understand our own autistic traits. When I was first diagnosed, I would have said “I do not stim”. That I do not have repetitive behaviors or reliance on routines. That I do not have Alexithymia or possibly Echolalia. and so on… This, and more I have learned to see in myself. Many late diagnosed adults have either compensated for differences in communication or socialization methods ( masking ) , or are in denial they even exist. It has taken me 15+ months of constant self evaluation, research and interaction with others on the spectrum discussing our differences and similarities etc.. and I STILL feel I’m just beginning to understand my autistic traits, and heal from a lifetime of self-denial.With your family history, it increases the chance you are on the spectrum. Especially if you are now seeing signs of this from the past and in the present. Talk with your family members who are autistic about what you feel. You may be surprised to hear them say… What took you so long, Ive know this for YEARS!!” - This happened to me - A friend and his wife that have known me since I was in my late teens… told me after diagnosis “ Oh.. I’ve know that a LONG time! “ She has not only known me all my life, but is a teacher who works with autistic students… My mouth literally fell open….If you can be honest with yourself… I mean if you can look at the facts without a bias of wanting to be or not be autistic… and are open to other possibilities other than Autism.. you should be able to at least determine if it is possible. Look at family history, look at school performance issues, or experiences with socialization or communication that you have not been able to truly understand. Talk with others who are autistic… ask questions.. tell them you suspect you might be but dont’ know…etc.. There are many out there who suspect this maybe the key to understanding a very confusing life. It is a common experience that if a person IS autistic, they will “know” it is true.I wish you well in your pursuit of the truth!

How do people from the United States sound after living in England for 1 or 2 years? Does their accent stay the same or do they start picking up British pronunciations?

I lived in England for six months when I was 11 years old, and I did pick up something of an English accent at the time, which went away after I returned to the United States. But later in life I moved to England and have lived there for 20 years. I have never started to sound English again. I’m too old. My accent is set. It’s a question of age, I think. As a child, your accent is still forming. As an adult, it’s not.My vocabulary is full of British terms, however. Some of them are very useful and have no real equivalent in American English. For reasons of family history, I also have bits of Navajo, Arabic, Flemish, and Swedish in my vocabulary. The only people who understand them are other family members, however.

Can I develop schizoid personality disorder if I don’t have any family history of this disorder or schizophrenia?

Please, please, PLEASE, do not listen to that person encouraging you to become Schizoid. It is NOT fun, and the actual disorder should not be desired.Anyway…Yes, it is possible to develop SzPD without a family history related to it. Personality disorders are believed to be the result of genetics and environment. Brain scans actually show mild variations among those with SzPD and even more so among those with StPD (Schizotypal). There are some theories that suggest Schizophrenia is a combination of SzPD and StPD, but it’s just a theory. Like these personality disorders, Schizophrenia is also a result of genetics and environment. Certain people are at a predisposition at birth to develop Schizophrenia. It is believed the person’s childhood environment and how much stress they encounter in their lives determines whether the Schizophrenia will actually develop or not. This is known as the diathesis-stress model. Cluster A personality disorders (Schizoid, Schizotypal, and Paranoid) are all believed to be related to Schizophrenia as well as believed to have a similar genetic predisposition. So, how does this answer your question? Well, what if your parent had a genetic predisposition to Schizophrenia or a related disorder, but it never developed? You wouldn’t have a family history of it because it never came. However, those genes still passed to you, giving you the predisposition. If both your parents had the predisposition, your predisposition is likely to be higher than either of theirs, making you even more susceptible. If you also have a vulnerability to stress or have a more stressful life than others, you risk of developing a Schizo-condition is even higher. So, yes, it is entirely possible to develop SzPD (or another Schizophrenia-related condition) without a family history of such. However, keep in mind that all of these conditions are rather rare. Only 1% of the population has Schizophrenia. If you have one parent with the disease, your risk of having it is 10%. If both parents have it, your risk is 40%. So even with both parents carrying the genes, the odds are still in your favor of not developing Schizophrenia. If you have a parent with the predisposition for Schizophrenia but who never developed it, your own risk is less than 10%. In fact, more individuals with Schizophrenic parents develop a Cluster A PD than the actual disease (although sometimes, the PD can become the disease). Some believe Cluster A PDs are milder, less psychotic forms of Schizophrenia (SzPD is the “negative” symptoms, StPD is the “positive” symptoms, and Paranoid PD is one of the most common delusions—all of these are part of the criteria used to diagnose Schizophrenia). If you follow this idea, then perhaps Cluster A PDs have a very weak genetic predisposition (in comparison to Schizophrenia). As such, an individual’s environment is the primary factor in whether one of these PDs will develop (especially for SzPD and Paranoid PD, which are far less likely that StPD to become Schizophrenia). So, if you are worried about developing Schizoid PD, I would say less concern should be placed on your genetics and more on your childhood (emotional neglect or lack of parental acceptance is common among children who become Schizoid). And as someone else said, SzPD does not develop in adulthood (unlike Schizophrenia). So, if you are already an adult and are worried for the future, rest easy. But perhaps this will give you incentive to be mindful of the environment you raise your children in…Signed:~Sophie Filo~
