What is it like to be a Freshman at an IIT?
I have tried my best, to summarize my entire first year at IIT Roorkee.Let’s begin:After two years of hard work and tons of sacrifices, I finally landed at my dream destination. The main building still gives me goosebumps. The day I was allotted my room, I connected the LAN cable to my laptop. And I got a shock when I did the speed test.As a result, I put the game on download, which I wanted to play but couldn't due to the JEE preparation. It was a 20GB+ game, and it got downloaded in less than 5 minutes. On the first day only, I consumed around 100 GB of data. The lectures started to begin after some days. Within 4-5 days only, I realized that I had to study by myself. Majority of the times you won’t be able to understand anything in the lecture. Gone were those JEE days when we used to get the feel of the topic.I also participated in one of the competitions held in the initial days only. Luckily our team won the second prize in it but all the prize money was spent in giving treat to my friends :PThen several of the workshops were organized in the college, providing information about the various groups that are present on the campus and what happens in them and their recruitment procedure.I got into two of the campus groups, namely NSS (National Service Scheme) and Geek Gazette. In one group, we used to teach students of the rural section of Roorkee free of cost, who cannot afford education. And in another group, we used to work on the magazine, which is published every semester for the institute. I am in the finance cell of that group. You will be getting treats, or better I should say Chapo in the IITR lingo very frequently from the seniors on various reasons like getting selected in one of the groups, freshers introduction, and a lot many.(A snapshot from one of the party that was given by the seniors to us (freshers), I am the first one starting from the left, I know I look funny without glasses)Then as time went by, came the midterms. During this time, the library is full of students; this is the time when you are going to feel tremendous pressure on you since a majority of the students study 2-3 days before the exam only. But as soon as these deadly midterms were over, I got a big sigh of relief and went with my friends to chill out and celebrate the ending of these exams.Time went by, and the lectures started again after the mid-semester break, things started back as per the usual schedule. My friends and I also did a project under the departmental course; We made a drone. Then came Thomso, the annual cultural fest of IIT Roorkee. It is a three-day-long fest in which many of the famous personalities across the globe comes and perform with a footfall of around 30k people coming from the various colleges of the country. Then as time went by, came the end terms; again the library getting full of people was a regular scene, and students studying for days without sleeping is a common thing during these times. But somehow, this time also passed; I again went out with my friends to chill out. But this time, we went out of Roorkee to Dehradun, Mussoorie, to celebrate the ending of end-terms.(This is my current profile picture too :P)Then came the end-semester break, and after that, the second semester started. Again the usual schedule went by, and the midterms got over. And the mid-semester break started, which is continuing till now due to the lockdown. To summarize, my first year went way beautiful as I expected it to be. You would get to explore n number of things during your first year at an IIT, but don't forget to have a perfect balance between academics and having fun. There are many students who destroy their career in the first year only by indulging in various bad habits. It's quite important to efficiently manage your time at an IIT.PS: I am missing my college days very badly and especially the LAN :p
How is life as a medico at KGMU, Lucknow?
Awesome.P.S.- long answer (I tried writing down all my memories formed in an year, so you better be prepared)1st proffs are just over and when I look back at the year that has passed it has been a rolarcoaster ride, I think it was the most awesome year of my life so far.I have learnt alot of things from washing clothes by myself to passing exams by doing study at the very last minute, making the perfect tea/coffee at 4am and also getting a close circle of people around myself whom I can trust.I have completed only 20% of my MBBS (a long way to go) so I can comment only on my experiences from 1st year.It all began with endless phone calls after 10pm within a few days of joining College, when 20 people used to gather around one phone in a room meant for 2 people. Countless friendships were initiated at that point for many people.By the end of October our batch was given fresher's party by our seniors which was the most fun event of 1st year. Boys are made to have hair only upto a length of 1cm and 0 facial hair until fresher's. Boys are supposed to follow a dress code for the party (which is highly confidential) but one of the essential elements of the code is a cap (which we have to make ourselves) and the tallest cap is given a cash reward. This was my capIt took me 12 hours to make this thing but it was still the 3rd tallest one.As the fresher's got over within a week or two preparation of Rhapsody (our annual fest) began, it was a month long phase which lasted till 15th of December.During that period we also had our sports week in which there were events for main stream sports like basketball, cricket, 100m sprint racing, kabbadi etc. And also fun sports customised for the event. A 5km marathon is also organised each year in the sports week. I participated in the marathon and it was a life changing experience because that marathon taught me the importance of endurance. Our physiology department organised a picnic for us (apart from the usual schedule of hematology lab :-p) the highlights of the event were a few games of truth and dare and some really good gulabjamuns. Then Rhapsody happened, it is a custom here that maximum opportunities of participation in Rhapsody is given to the junior most batch or 1st year. I participated in the most fun event of Rhapsody — the fashion walk. The New C.V. hostel is the hostel that is allocated to boys in 1st year it's a beautiful place with birds waking you up in the morning by their chirpings, the rooms always have their gates opened in new C.V. our batch was actually a very big family till the time we stayed in new C.V. and it is the only hostel in KGMU (for boys) which has a time restriction, you need to get back by 10pm or you better have a strong reason why you are late. So it gave a homely feel all that time.New C.V. hostelAs half of the year passed and January came, the other half was waiting with some suprises. People now had to change their habbits from the Rhapsody days to study days. Some people did it immediately after rhapsody and became permanent residents of reading room of the library, you could spot these poor creatures crawling back to new C.V. hostel at 4 am from the reading room when they where finally pushed out from there. Some people did the process after 1st terminals in February while I'm still in transition phase (hope to do that before next rhapsody).Another important event was Saraswati puja organised by our seniors again it was an event of our physiology department. There were many events like rangoli making, writing competition, kite making, face painting etc. People here have no dearth of talent (except me and some of my friends). So we (me and my talentless friends) also participated in rangoli making competition hoping that only thing I have made my entire life could save me here also.BatmanAfter we made this whole thing we were told that professors from anatomy department are going to judge each rangoli. Now imagine this scenario there were 17–18 rangolis each of them beautifully made (you can see the Rangoli adjacent to ours) and with a strong reason behind making that particular design and we made Batman vs Superman logo what could we possibly say, but luckily got saved that day, the viva skills of making things up is a bliss. As a medico, there were seminars and guest lectures all round the year in the campus in which maximum participation was from 1st year, biochemistry and physiology departments conducted national level conferences in the campus in 2017, while anatomy is preparing for one in the coming October. We had a dissection competition, which is quite a unique event and I have not heard of similar event happening in any medical college and I got the topic of rectus sheath and as the fate would have been we accidentally dissected it in this designIt's Batman againThe year year ended with a very cherishable physiology and anatomy day in which alot of people from my batch participated and showcased their talent, I took it a mile ahead on a personal front and confronted my fear of public speaking. The best part of the day was good food with a lot of good pictures. When I look back at the year I see alot people have gotten into relationships, some got busy with studies, some with a sport and then I look upon myself and I feel contemplated as I got most of myself.Cheers!!!
How good is NIT Patna for CSE? Did anyone get a seat in NIT Patna?
Let's first talk about NIT PatnaCampus:- NIT patna has a small campus as compared to other NITs as it is around 45 acres. Almost all basic things are present within the campus like canteen, Nescafe spot, playground, basketball court, ATM…,,.., . Here is the pic of ground.Academics :- The academics is not top notch as students are not serious related to studies (that doesn't mean they are not ambitious). Everyone is doing different things like coding, playing games, gym and sports, UPSC, GATE, IES exam, SSC,…,…,. Professors are good but neither they nor the students are much interested about subjects. There is seperate department buildings but classes are mostly held in CWRS( 1st and 2nd year). Seniors are helping. NIT patna has a very good culture for those whose are preparing for civil services exams as many of the senior cracked them. GATE topper of last year is from NIT patna, some seniors also cracked CAT with a very good rank.Placements :- The placements of the branches like CSE and ECE are good. Average package was around 7 lpa and for CSE it is around 9 lpa for the year 2020. Here is the list of some companies who visit campus for placements.Campus life, sports and fests:- The annual techno cultural fest of NIT patna is corona and melange . The fest is decent. I find the sports facilities as very good in the campus as almost every sports indoor outdoor are present ( koi library jaaye ya na jaaye gym jarur jaate hain). Being a small campus it provides a decent campus life (5.5 out of 10) not a dream one. Hostels are at peace for boys as they provide maximum students twin sharing but for girls quad sharing is there. Girls hostel is within campus and boys’ hostel is at 2 mint walking distance. Here are some pics of the campus,,Some others points;-The college is situated at ganga ghat, I used to go to ghat daily as it is very soothing. There are no ac classrooms( You can sleep in the library 😃).Connectivity of NIT patna is better as compared to IIT Patna.Definitely not a dream NIT but a mediocre one, you will get plenty of time to pursue your interest if not distracted.Make good friends and be focused on what you want.Best of luck,,,
