What happens in an operating room between patients?
I am interpreting your phrase “ in an operating room between patients” as the activity in an operating room after one surgery is finished and before the next surgery begins. After this current patient leaves the operating room in the company of the anesthesiologist, the nursing staff and technicians remove the equipment and instruments used. The instruments must be sent to the sterile processing unit to be cleaned and sterilized in preparation for another future surgery. All bedding material is collected and sent to the laundry. All waste material is collected and removed from the room in special containers. Some items will go into general waste, some will be sent to be incinerated. The operating room is cleaned with special disinfectants on the floor, walls, and surgical lights. The disposable or reusable equipment for anesthesia is processed by the anesthesiologist or anesthesia assistant. Equipment and medication is prepared for the next patient’s anesthetic. One of the operating room staff performs the scrub, glove and gown procedure. The previously selected and prepared selection of instruments and supplies are brought into the operating room. The double layer coverings are opened and the prepared equipment and supplies are offered to the gloved and gowned nursing staff person or Operating Room Technician. This person is called the scrub nurse. The equipment is then examined and the instruments and supplies (sutures staples, dressings) are carefully and completely counted and documented by the scrub nurse and their associate ( circulating nurse). The list of what items are present is compared to the list of expected items. Disposable items such as sutures, staples etc are counted and given to the scrub nurse. Any missing items are obtained. New bed linen is placed on the operating room bed. When the patient is available for an interview, either in the hallway outside the operating room or in a special preop holding area, one of the nursing staff goes there, greets the patient and identifies themself. The patient’s health documents are carefully examined . The patient is identified by multiple methods. The surgeon and assistants will soon appear and greet the patient and answer any questions. Before or after this, the anesthesiologist and assistants will greet the patient and identify themselves if needed. They will review the patient’s health information, perform a special physical examination and review the plan for anesthesia with the patient. If any special equipment, xrays, units of blood etc are required, their presence or availability is confirmed. The patient will be brought into the operating room either on a stretcher or by walking. The patient will be introduced to any other nursing staff and then will position themself on the operating room bed. The bed will be adjusted for comfort and a warm blanket is placed on the patient. Monitors appropriate to the anticipated procedure will be applied by the anesthesia team. All members of the operating team will gather and a preop surgical checklist will be completed: a) name and identification of the patient; b)type and location of surgery; c) name of each team leader or individual directly involved in the patient’s care; d) each team ( nursing, anesthesia, surgery ) is asked in turn, if they have checked their equipment, are satisfied and are ready to proceed. Any special equipment that might be required is confirmed to be immediately present or available nearby. If this checklist procedure has been completed in a satisfactory manner, only then will the administration of anesthesia begin.

The University of Waterloo had never heard of him.Continue to read and decide yourself, Is Canada is dying or is it dead already?Sir/Madam: Canada is already dead, we worked all our lives, all our family from scratch, starting with zero. At the end of the tunnel, it is light, but it is a train coming towards us.A few thoughts before you view this article/answer.1. Canada’s weak and full of flaws immigration system open to abuse, we have heard/seen unbelievable stories, where some fake refugees and illegal and ex-druggies just cleaned enough before passing the test to enter this country.2. The question is not about my success or failure; the problem is: Is Canada dying?3. I do not need anyone’s suggestion to Move, my family and I have put almost fifty years of blood/sweat/tears, we are not here to move. FYI, we are deep-rooted here and very successful in our own right. We are hopefully here for forever, rest assured. My answer and in my evaluation, it is dead already. In case you different ideas please try to write your own arguments.Further in my views:Canada will pass on a lot of debt and no legacy to the coming generations. Barren lands/empty oceans/mines/ stripe the country of natural resources one by one.4. Write your own loser story or maybe a success story, if you have one and fill your profile for a change which in most cases are empty. Most likely there is nothing worth mentioning.5. It takes thousands or millions of man-hours to build an airplane/buildings and billions of dollars of the asset, and all it takes a few losers to blow it, remember 9/11(total cost 100 s billions to the USA) and Air India, 182 (Total cost/damage to Canada 100 s of millions). It takes 100, 000 s, of men/women to make and it takes a few to destroy it.6. The Canadian health care system is dysfunctional and sucks. What does Free Health Insurance in Canada mean? In some provinces, you pay Health Insurance premium, unless you’re on a minimum income. Costs for prescription drugs come out of your own pocket unless you have extended Health Insurance. Lots of people can only afford extended insurance when it’s paid by their employer. Why increasing DB pension coverage at work should be part of the solution The number of Canadians over 65 is set to double by 2036 according to Statistics Canada – in fact, the fastest-growing segment of the Canadian population is made up of people over 85. As Canadians age, more of us are heading into our senior years financially ill-equipped to adequately support ourselves when our working lives end. A stark illustration of this has been set out in a slew of new statistics and studies that show poverty among seniors is on the rise once again after nearly two decades of decline. This should be a warning sign for policymakers: without action to address gaps in the retirement income system and strengthen access to pensions, Canada faces a bleak future, with more seniors living in poverty and unable to climb out. Such a scenario will have profound consequences for the ongoing economic and social wellbeing of Canadians. In this paper, we provide highlights from a growing body of statistics and research on senior poverty in Canada and its impact on the most vulnerable Canadians. We also call on policymakers to strengthen the workplace pension system in Canada -- and to draw on the experience and knowledge of Canada’s biggest pension investors to develop workable solutions. In doing so, we can truly strengthen to retirement system and collectively work together to prevent the growth of senior poverty in the future. Part 1: Not ready for retirement Two key shifts have contributed to the rise of senior poverty in Canada: demographics combined with the steady decline of workplace pension coverage. Canadians are living longer than ever before: the life expectancy for both men and women is now 80.2 years (77.8 years for men, 82.6 for women). The number of seniors is also growing at a faster rate than any other segment of the population -- by 2041 it is estimated that 25% of Canadians will be seniors, with those over 85 leading the way (Statistics Canada). How will this growing cohort support themselves financially when they can no longer work? Traditionally, Canadian workers could rely on Canada’s retirement system – often described as a three-legged stool made up of government benefits, workplace pensions, and private savings. Today, however, that stool is a lot less steady as workplace pension plans, once an income staple for many seniors, continue their retreat. In 1977, nearly half of Canadian paid employees (46 per cent) belonged to an employer pension plan – in 2014 that number was 33 per cent. What keeps us awake at night? Top issues in CanadaWhat keeps us awake: Top national issuesNOVEMBER 21, 2016By Bruce Anderson & David ColettoIn our latest survey of national opinion, we explored the issues people are concerned about across Canada today.• One in three (34%) say that economic conditions in general are the most important issue facing Canada today. This is the number one concern of 47% in Alberta, and a much smaller 27% in BC.• Another 9% say unemployment is their biggest preoccupation. Again, this number is 17% in Alberta, making it the second ranked issue in that province. This means that roughly two out of three (64%) Albertans put the economy and unemployment on the top of the priority list, almost twice as many as do across the country overall (34%).• Health care ranks as the 2nd most important issue among people over 45, but only ties for 4th among those under 45.• In BC, housing is the 3rd most important issue. In Ontario, housing is only the 6th most important issue. In the other provinces, less than 1% mention it as the top issue. Across the country, housing garners twice as many mentions as top issue among those under 45 compared to those over that age.• Immigration is considered the most important issue by 5%, terrorism 2% and foreign policy or defence 1%. Concern about immigration twice as high in Manitoba/Saskatchewan as it is in Ontario.• The environment/climate change is considered the top issue by 8% nationally. Women and those under 45 put a greater emphasis on this issue than men and older people, but the differences are modest. This issue ranks 5th among men and tied for 4th among women. BC leads in concern on this issue. The preoccupations of Canadians vary substantially based on their partisan leanings.• Among NDP voters, the top 3 mentions, were the economy (27%) poverty/inequality (25%) and the environment/climate change (14%).• Among Conservatives, the top three were the economy (51%), health care (10%) and unemployment (10%). Immigration was mentioned by just 6%, and terrorism (3%), defence/foreign policy (0%), and law and order (4%) were much farther down the list of top issues. The environment/climate change was mentioned by 1% of Conservative voters.• Among Liberal supporters, the top three were the economy (38%), health care (18%) poverty/inequality (13%), followed by climate change (9%).What keeps us awake at night? The University of Waterloo had never heard of him.Instead, the Canada Border Services Agency allege Singh was part of a sophisticated immigration fraud used to gain illegal entry into Canada.Investigators say Singh had no intention of attending the university, and his behaviour once he arrived was not that of someone planning to study here, according to court records. His Waterloo acceptance letter, used to gain a student visa and eventually a work visa, was fake.Singh was one of 15 people caught in a recent probe by the Canada Border Services Agency, all using fake acceptance letters from the University of Waterloo's engineering program. He was convicted in April under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, and is awaiting sentencing. Which sectors are currently booming?
Industries that will boom after coronavirusIndustries likely to see post-pandemic profitsShutterstock.comCoronavirus has brought the world to a standstill, and as a result many businesses are struggling to stay afloat. However, some industries, such as those focusing on home entertainment or dealing in essentials such as groceries, have actually seen profits increase, and are likely to continue to do so post-pandemic. Meanwhile, other industries that may be struggling now will see a boom once the COVID-19 crisis is over. Click or scroll through to find out industries that are are going to boom, or continue to boom, in the aftermath of the pandemic.Virtual meeting industryGirts Ragelis/ShutterstockVirtual meetings have brought an element of normality into our work-from-home lives. One of the companies at the forefront of the industry, Zoom, has boomed during the crisis, and saw its stock price surge by over 100% in just two months. Google has made the premium features of its platform Google Hangouts free until the end of September, and Microsoft saw daily users of its software Teams jump from 32 million to 44 million during March. And there is speculation that they won't disappear once everyday life is back to normal either...Virtual meeting industryfizkes/ShutterstockNow that most companies have had to adapt to allow employees to work from home, it's likely that there'll be more flexibility for remote working in the future. Having honed their home working space and enjoyed the lack of a commute, many workers may opt to work from home more frequently and platforms provided by Microsoft, Google, and Zoom are likely to still be in high demand to keep colleagues connected even when everybody is allowed back in the office.Cybersecuritydennizn/ShutterstockCybersecurity is always big business, but an increasing dependency on digital tools such as virtual meeting platforms means that our data is more susceptible to hacking than ever before. Coronavirus has proven to be one of the biggest threats to cybersecurity, as scammers are taking advantage of the global population’s uncertainty around the disease. Compromising business emails and sending spam email campaigns have been particularly popular, and many attackers are using the names and logos of trusted companies, such as the World Health Organisation (WHO), to get users to click on dangerous links, according to cyber security company Proofpoint.Read more about online scammers' tricks to watch out for in the pandemicCybersecurityhttp://REDPIXEL.PL/ShutterstockThe pandemic has pushed companies to move their services online, and for many that move has been rushed, meaning that not all necessary steps may have been taken to ensure that data such as customer details are as protected as they need to be in this age of rising cybercrime. Cybersecurity is an area that businesses may now be re-evaluating the importance of and pumping money into so they ensure that all their online users are safe.E-learning resourcesFabio Principe/ShutterstockMany parents have had to become teachers overnight as schools across the world have shut, and online learning resources have boomed in response. In China, technology was already eating into the traditional education system, with AI resources supplementing, and in some cases replacing, real-life teachers. The restrictions put in place as a result of the coronavirus have forced the education system to move online, and now that that initial step has been taken it is possible that the traditional classroom will be altered post-pandemic and e-learning will continue to take precedence even once schools reopen.E-learning resourcesRido/ShutterstockIt isn’t only school pupils that have been left high and dry, as most university students have been sent home to finish this year of their studies remotely. When asked about the future of technology in education, 63% of university leaders predicted that prestigious universities would have full university courses available for online study by 2030, according to a survey carried out by Times Higher Education.Read more about how the pandemic could change learning forever, for good and badE-learning resourcesPostmodern Studio/ShutterstockAnd it's not just students turning to online resources. Lockdown has prompted many to try and master a new skill to pass the time, for example popular online languages app Duolingo saw a 148% increase in signs-ups in the US during March. It is possible that the sudden enthusiasm for skill mastering will only last until normal life resumes, but it could be the case that the ease and low cost of pursuing new hobbies from home will mean that e-learning companies to continue to be a success.E-learning resourcesSterling Munksgard/ShutterstockThe internet is also awash with virtual workshop platforms such as Masterclass, and they've seized the opportunity to entertain and educate people who are wondering how to kill time. Cookery lessons with top chefs including Gordon Ramsay, writing classes from best-selling authors such as Dan Brown and drama classes from the likes of Natalie Portman are among the courses that users can pay for. As many people take those skills into the real world post-lockdown, the platform's success has a high chance of growing.Online fitness industryMartin Rickett/PA Wire/PA ImagesValued at almost $100 billion (£80.4bn) before coronavirus hit, it’s safe to say that the fitness industry was already booming. Now that gyms and fitness studios in many places have had to close their doors temporarily, those in the industry able to offer their services online are reaping the benefits. British fitness instructor Joe Wicks is perhaps one of the most notable examples as hundreds of thousands of households tune in for his child-friendly workouts each morning. Wicks has raised his profile, as well as a lot of money for charity, and post-lockdown is likely to see returning customers. Actor Chris Hemsworth’s fitness app Centr saw a 300% increase in downloads in April, while interactive at-home fitness system Mirror has seen product sales double during the pandemic, according to CNN. But what will home fitness look like after the pandemic has passed?Online fitness industryDirima/ShutterstockMany fitness fanatics will be desperate to get back to the gym after months of squeezing a workout into their living room, but the finance-conscious and those who appreciate the privacy and flexibility of exercising at home may be keen to stick to their new exercise schedules. The science behind habit formation suggests that exercising regularly over a prolonged period of time – on average between one to two months –will build it into a habit, and so by the end of lockdown home fitness fans are likely to keep up their pandemic workout plans. Potentially good news for the online fitness industry.Gaming industryVantage_DS/ShutterstockThe coronavirus pandemic has offered existing gamers ample time to hone their skills, as well as the opportunity for non-gamers to see what all the fuss is all about. In March, the release of Nintendo game Animal Crossing: New Horizons saw sales that trumped all of the series’ previous games combined. Similarly, game streaming platform Twitch saw a 10% increase in its global usage in the same month, according to http://gamingindustry.biz. Video games sales are definitely on the rise thanks to the pandemic, and it’s possible that gamers may find it difficult to shake the habit once the world returns to its pre-COVID-19 state. How Nintendo conquered the worldMovie streaming servicespixinoo/ShutterstockNetflix has come a long way since its beginnings as a movie postal service back in 1998. Over 20 years later, it is the best-known film streaming service in the world and in the US alone has almost 70 million subscribers. Disney+ is the latest streaming service to capture the public’s hearts, and you could say that the timing couldn’t have been better. Launched in the US, Canada, the Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand in November 2019, the platform reached the rest of Europe at the end of March, and now has more than 50 million subscribers, a target that rival Netflix took seven years to reach.Movie streaming servicesPhoto Hall/ShutterstockThe success of Netflix has always been hard to predict, and its stock prices were fluctuating before the coronavirus outbreak. An open letter to investors suggested that while the number of subscribers had "temporarily accelerated", the latter half of 2020 is likely to see a decrease in new members as "the person who didn't join Netflix during the entire confinement is not likely to join soon after the confinement". Both Netflix and Disney+ will continue to offer a unique service after the pandemic however, and having a larger audience that has become accustomed to unlimited access to international films, addictive original series. and childhood classics is likely to keep those subscriptions consistent, and maybs even increase post-pandemic.Home delivery industryAtstock Productions/ShutterstockGrocery delivery slots quickly became like gold dust when vulnerable people were advised to stay at home. It has also bolstered business for supermarkets such as Walmart in the US, as well as the UK's online-only supermarket delivery service Ocado. After reporting a £45 million ($56m) deficit last year, Ocado experienced such high demand that it had to turn away orders in March when its website became overrun with customers. Even now lockdowns are easing, it’s expected that the industry will grow. Online shopping is set to make up 6.4% of the global grocery sales by the end of 2021, which is higher than the pre-coronavirus prediction of 4.6% of sales, according to Rabobank International's forecasts.Home delivery industryhollandfotoMany restaurants and cafés scrambled to facilitate takeaway orders so that they could continue operating after closing their doors, and some delivery businesses such as Uber Eats waived delivery fees for independent eateries to help keep them afloat during the pandemic. Anything from pizzas to pints were ferried from commercial kitchens to families unable to leave their homes. Bars and restaurants have started to open but at limited capacity in order to maintain social distancing, meaning that delivery will be an attractive option to many. And given the boost that delivery services are giving the food industry at the moment, it would be surprising if small businesses revert back to dine-in only when everything goes completely back to normal.Home delivery industryJulie Clopper/ShutterstockPerhaps unsurprisingly home delivery services such as Amazon benefited from the pandemic. As most people were stuck at home, online orders were the only way to shop for non-essential items, and shares of the global marketplace have gonr through the roof. Online shoppers spend around $11,000 (£9,000) a second on the site according to newspaper The Guardian, and the money spent now will likely help the international delivery giant expand even further. This increase in sales has already added to the eye-watering wealth of CEO Jeff Bezos, who is already the world's richest man. Bezos has seen his wealth increase by more than $36.2 billion (£29bn) since the start of the pandemic. The pandemic's biggest billionaire winners and losersSupermarketsCreative Touch Imaging Ltd/NurPhoto/PA ImagesWhile Amazon may have been swooping in on the business of smaller retailers hit by the pandemic, other big retailers like Walmart are certainly holding their own. Having thrived during the 2007-8 recession it’s perhaps unsurprising that Walmart is one of the few winners of the crisis, and it enlisted 150,000 new members of staff to handle the spike in shoppers. Kroger and Costco have seen similar increases in customer demand, as have similar general stores across the world.Find out more about Walmart and other brands that boomed during global crisesSupermarketsChekyravaa/ShutterstockKeeping American homes well-stocked throughout the crisis comes with additional perks as it has also done wonders for the retailer’s reputation. In a recent survey carried out by the Path to Purchase Institute, Walmart is now rated as the most trusted supermarket in America, and it is likely that the nation will stay loyal to the grocer and continue to shop there long after the pandemic is over.Legal servicesantoniodiaz/ShutterstockWhile lawyers and solicitors can work from home like everybody else, lockdown is likely to be brewing a spike in cases for them to deal with once restrictions are lifted. China is slowly moving out of quarantine, and divorce rates in the country have doubled as a result of couples being cooped up together for a number of months.Legal servicesMinerva Studio/ShutterstockAs a result, those working in family law have been inundated with cases, and it’s likely that the Western world will see a similar pattern once lockdown life is behind us. Divorce rates normally see an increase after the summer and Christmas holidays, and as coronavirus is likely to out-span both of those periods, the number of couples separating as a result will likely also be greater. There will also be the small matter of the paperwork and legal precautions that need to be put in place for the huge number of new drugs that are in development as a result of the coronavirus…Pharmaceuticals industryPressmaster/ShutterstockBillions of dollars are being pumped into the pharmaceuticals industry as companies race to find a vaccine against COVID-19. Companies that are ahead of the rest when it comes to scientific breakthroughs are predominantly those with prior research that can be put to use, such as information about other coronavirus strains such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).The medical companies racing to find a COVID-19 vaccinePharmaceuticals industryGorodenkoff/ShutterstockThe importance of continuing infectious disease prevention and treatment research even once a coronavirus vaccine has been found is huge, so that the world can be prepared for any future pandemics. Stocks in biotech companies, many of which are now battling this novel coronavirus, have shot up, and this global crisis has exemplified how crucial the pharmaceuticals industry is.Cleanliness productsFotoHelin/ShutterstockShelves were cleared of antibacterial hand gels and soaps as soon as it became apparent that an infectious disease was spreading, and months into the crisis those living in affected countries have become au fait with the art of thorough handwashing.Cleanliness productsavijit bouri/ShutterstockGood hygiene practices have become such an intrinsic part of our day-to-day routine that resorting back to a state where we wash our hands less seems almost unfathomable. With additional hand sanitising stations having been installed in many public places and within businesses, it is safe to say that companies distributing cleaning products are unlikely to go out of business anytime soon.Remote medical servicesJohn Panella/ShutterstockBoth emergency rooms in the US and A&E departments in the UK saw a massive slump in numbers of patients coming in to seek emergency medical attention, with a drop of up to 80% fewer cases in northern England. It is understandable that people want to avoid visits to hospitals and doctors at the moment, and while medical staff are urging the sick to seek help as they normally would, it is likely that many are instead relying on remote medical services for advice.Remote medical servicesTada Images/ShutterstockSystems like NowGP in Europe and Teladoc Health in the US are seeing users flock to their platforms as the pandemic discourages people from leaving the house. Remote diagnosis and treatment service Zipnosis reported a staggering 3,600% increase in its usage as a result of coronavirus. Governments are recognising the importance of such services, and in March the Trump administration announced that there would be an expansion of such services across America. This is likely to become a global trend as public awareness of disease transmission may put people off accessing these services in person.Eco-friendly technologiesWilliam Perugini/ShutterstockBroadly speaking the travel industry has been forced to a standstill as a result of the pandemic. Most of the world is forbidden from non-essential travel, and oil prices have plummeted as a result. But the traditional car-making industry was already in trouble before COVID-19 hit, thanks to growing awareness of the environmental impact of diesel and petrol -run cars, and the pandemic has boosted the green argument as satellite imagery from the European Space Agency shows a dramatic decrease in the amount of air pollution across the world compared to this time last year. And so while the positive results of this unintentional global experiment may stop people buying cars post-lockdown, automobiles built around green technologies may have better luck…Eco-friendly technologiesHadrian/ShutterstockElectric car producer Tesla has seen its stocks go up by 64% this year, and its first quarter of 2020 performed better than any other first quarter to date, while car maker Audi has created a new department called Artemis that is focused solely on getting its electric vehicles to market quicker than planned. It’s clear that more and more people are putting ‘better for the environment’ on their car-hunting checklist, and this trend is only likely to continue as lockdown has shown us how quickly air pollution can be cleaned up when fewer people are on the roads. In fact, the French government has only agreed to bailout Air France-KLM if the airline agrees to some green conditions, including slashing its carbon dioxide emmissions by half. At the end of June France committed €15 billion ($16.9bn/£13.5bn) to make its economy greener.Electric scootersMatthew Horwood / Contributor / Getty ImagesBefore the pandemic electric scooters were seeing an increase in usage, even overtaking docked bikes in popularity in the US in late 2019. But coronavirus could be the making of the electric scooter industry. Despite controversies over safety in the past, more and more cities are giving electric scooter companies such as Uber's Bird and Lime the green light. And now that the pandemic has led many cities to impose social distancing measures that restrict cars in many of the world's urban areas, the perfect storm for scooter rental companies has been created.Electric scootersMonkey Business Images / Shutterstock.comRome authorised electric scooters on 1 March, just as the pandemic was taking hold, but now that the country has come out of lockdown the city is awash with scooters, as Romans avoid public transport and make the most of clearer streets. The Italian authorities also see the scooters as a viable greener alternative to cars and mopeds in the future and on 3 June Rome's mayor held a press conference with scooter provider Bird to promote their benefits. Other cities are also expecting a boom: the UK has authorised the use of e-scooters from 4 July, the same day that the country's pubs and bars are allowed to open again, and as London has now created car-free zones – the biggest in Europe in fact – electric scooters are predicted to be popular post-lockdown.CyclingShutterstock.comAs people avoid public transport in many cities in order to reduce the risk of spreading coronavirus, they have turned to more traditional methods of getting around. While walking is popular, the cycling industry is already benefitting from the pandemic as more and more people are getting around on two wheels. From late March the UK's Association of Cycle Traders (ACT) reported a boom in bike sales and those coming in to have their bikes repaired, while the US's National Association of City Transport Officials (NACTO) reported an "explosion in cycling", and Eco-counter reported that in the first weeks of May the southwest of America saw an 100% increase in bike use.CyclingLondon Photo/ShutterstockThe trend is set to continue after the pandemic as governments are encouraging the usage of bikes. In America, New York is closing 140 miles of streets to cars, to allow for bikes and pedestrians, a move which could become permanent, while Seattle plans to permanently shut 20 miles of streets. In the UK, prime minister Boris Johnson has pledged £2 billion ($2.6bn) to the cycling cause, offering £50 ($65) vouchers for bike repairs, bike lessons for everyone, and the introduction of thousands of miles of new bike lanes across the country, as the nation looks to improve its people's health in the event of a second wave of the virus, as well as provide safe areas for those to travel by bike.Experiences industrySteve Mann/Shutterstock"What’s the first thing you’ll do once everything’s back to normal?" is one of the questions likely being asked around dinner tables all over the world. Having so much time on our hands means more time for dreaming about things we’d rather be doing, and as coronavirus has been a striking reminder that life is short, many will likely be keen to start ticking items of the bucket list once restrictions are lifted. Just as coronavirus was starting to gain traction in late February, there was a surge in ticket sales for Virgin Galactic’s inaugural space flights. The flights are due to take off later this year, and space isn't the only destination that people are eyeing up now that we're in lockdwon.Experiences industryPaper Cat/ShutterstockThere has also been an increase in travel searches for longer holidays from September onwards, according to travel marketing company Sojern, with families looking at booking getaways. As well as once-in-a-lifetime experiences, it is likely that smaller local attractions will gain popularity as research by the company shows that people are more likely to stay closer to home and take trips to zoos and theme parks. From spaceships to ferris wheels, it's clear that we'll be keen to get out of the house and experience something new as soon as we can.Bizarre items people are buying in lockdownGardeningCourtesy TruffautIn France, the pandemic saw those in lockdown turn their attention towards their gardens, providing a boost in sales for garden centres. Even city dwellers were making the most of limited space, with balcony gardens and vegetable patches common. In fact, the growth in the market led French garden chain Truffaut to open a new store in Paris, near Bastille on 17 July, bucking the trend of other bricks-and-mortar stores that are struggling to bounce back from lockdown and the incoming economic crisis. The chain has benefited from online sales, and a new delivery service, to boost its sales.GardeningShutterstock.comAnd it's not just France that has seen a growing interest in gardening. During the UK's lockdown British garden centres saw a boost in online sales, as gardeners had more time on their hands to spend tending to their plants and crops. This continued when shops finally reopened, and garden centres and DIY stores led the 12% rebound in retail sales in May, after an unprecedented fall of 18.1% in sales in non-food stores in April. As lockdown has reignited gardeners' passion for time outdoors, and gave non-gardeners the bug, the industry is set to do well post-pandemic.Personal protective equipmentplo/ShutterstockPersonal protective equipment (PPE) has been one of the most talked-about resources of this pandemic. Demand has been off the charts, and nations that rely on imports from other countries such as China have noticeably fallen short when it comes to supplying their own workers.Personal protective equipmentInkheartX/ShutterstockIn light of the devastating damage caused by the virus, there will be a call for hospitals to have stockpiles in place ready to go should similar crises break out in the future. All PPE has expiry dates, and so constant supplies of fresh equipment will be needed to keep reserves at levels that they need to be, meaning that manufacturers will be kept in business to meet the new demand.
