What do Catholics think about former Catholic priest Father Charles Chiniquy's book "Fifty Years in the Church of Rome"?

This book came out in 1886. Interesting that it is still being republished and is a staple of Sola Scriptura devotees who want to believe the worst about Catholicism. Chiniquy was a Catholic priest for only 25 years, not fifty, and often in trouble through disagreements with his bishops - this can be seen from the fact that he kept moving from one diocese and country to another. Even when he became a Presbyterian he got into trouble.Charles Chiniquy was born in 1809 to a French-Canadian family in the village of Kamouraska, Quebec. He lost his father at an early age and was adopted by his uncle. As a young man, Chiniquy studied to become a Catholic priest at the Petit Seminaire (Little Seminary) in Nicolet, Quebec. He was ordained a Catholic priest in 1833. After his ordination, he served his church in Quebec. During the 1840s, he led a very successful campaign throughout Quebec against alcohol and drunkenness.Chiniquy, then a Roman Catholic priest, left Canada in the wake of a series of scandals. He was offered a fresh start by James Oliver Van de Velde, Bishop of Chicago, after Ignace Bourget, Bishop of Montreal, asked him to leave in 1851. Chiniquy settled in St. Anne, Illinois. In 1855, Chiniquy was sued for libel by a prominent Catholic layman named Peter Spink in Kankakee, Illinois. After the fall court term, Spink applied for a change of venue to the court in Urbana. Chiniquy hired the lawyer Abraham Lincoln to defend him. The spring court action in Urbana was the highest profile libel suit in Lincoln's career. The case was ended in the fall court session by agreement.Chiniquy clashed with the Bishop of Chicago, Anthony O'Regan, Van de Velde's successor, over the bishop's treatment of Catholics in the city, particularly French Canadians. He said that O'Regan was secretly backing Spink's suit against him. Chiniquy said that in 1856, O'Regan had threatened him with excommunication if he did not go to a new location where the bishop wanted to assign him. Chiniquy was suspended, on August 19, 1856, for public insubordination by Bishop O'Regan.. Because he continued to celebrate Mass and administer the other sacraments, he was excommunicated on September 3, 1856.Several months later, the New York Times published a pastoral letter from Bishop O'Regan in which he stated that he had suspended Chiniquy. Since the priest had continued his normal duties as a priest, the bishop excommunicated him by letter.About two years later, on August 3, 1858, O'Regan's successor, Bishop James Duggan, formally reconfirmed Chiniquy's excommunication in St. Anne.Chiniquy vigorously disputed that he had been excommunicated, saying publicly that the bishop was mistaken. Chiniquy left the Roman Catholic Church in 1858.Chiniquy with many followers, joined the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America (PCUSA). He was admitted as a Presbyterian minister on February 1, 1860. Within two years, Chiniquy, was in trouble with the Presbytery of Chicago over his administration of charity funds and a college. Rather than face an expensive trial he decided to move back to Canada.Alexander F. Kemp was chairman of the Synod of the Canada Presbyterian Church committee that examined Chiniquy's admission application. According to Kemp, Chiniquy was involved in both presbytery and civil court proceedings connected with the administration of charitable funds and with what Kemp described as an educational institute. The Presbytery of Chicago had charged him with unministerial and unchristian conduct. Chiniquy was expected to answer these charges before the presbytery. At that stage of the proceedings, he and his congregation resolved to separate from the Presbytery of Chicago, and the Old School PCUSA, and to request recognition from the Canada Presbyterian Church, to which he was admitted. He then went on lecture circuits expounding the alleged evils of Catholicism. He claimed that the Church was pagan, that Roman Catholics worshipped the Virgin Mary, that its theology spoils the Gospel, and that its theology is anti-Christian. He also claimed that the Vatican had planned to take over the United States by importing Catholic immigrants from Ireland, Germany and France. This was at a time of high immigration rates from those countries, in response to social (the Great Famine in Ireland) and political upheaval (revolutions in Germany and France.)Chiniquy claimed that he was falsely accused by his superiors (and that Abraham Lincoln had come to his rescue), that the American Civil War was a plot against the United States of America by the Vatican, and that the Vatican was behind the Confederate cause, and the death of President Lincoln, and that Lincoln's assassins were faithful Roman Catholics ultimately serving Pope Pius IX.After leaving the Catholic Church, Chiniquy dedicated his life to attacking it and trying convert French Canadians from Catholicism to Protestantism. He wrote a number of books and tracts expressing his views on the alleged errors in the faith and practices of the Roman Catholic Church. His two most influential works are “Fifty Years in The Church of Rome” and “The Priest, The Woman and The Confessional.” These books raised concerns in the United States about the Catholic Church. He joined the Orange Order and said of it "I always found them staunch and true. I consider it a great honour to be an Orangeman. Every time I go on my knees I pray that God may bless them and make them as numerous and bright as the stars of the heaven above.”He died in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on January 16, 1899.To this day, some of Chiniquy's works are still promoted among Protestants and Sola Scriptura believers. One of his most well-known modern day followers was Jack Chick, who created a comic-form adaptation of 50 Years In The Church of Rome, called "The Big Betrayal." He relied strongly on Chiniquy's claims in his own anti-Catholic tracts.(Wiki text used but shortened, reordered and adapted and with my own additions)

What sacraments would a Catholic have to receive before they can be ordained a priest?

The two articles below explain what ordination involves and the steps necessary to become an “ordained minister” or priest. Normally Baptism and Confirmation are the only Sacraments needed, but a lengthy application and discernment process must take place before a candidate will be accepted into a program. But there is another criteria that one needs to be a priest: love of God and love of neighbor. Above and beyond the education a candidate gets is the fact that he becomes a “public” figure, and needs an ardent desire to minister to all of his flock. He needs to be outgoing, for many will come to him to receive the Sacraments, advice and leadership. A reclusive will never do.*** Holy Orders ***Catholic men who “take Holy Orders” receive a special sacrament called Holy Orders, which creates the hierarchy of deacon, priest, and bishop. These men (who are ordained by a bishop by means of that sacrament) serve the spiritual needs of others in the Catholic Church. A baptized man must first be ordained a deacon before being ordained a priest and ordained a priest before being ordained a bishop. So every priest and every bishop has experienced the Sacrament of Holy Orders more than once, but he experiences ordination to each level only once. One of the primary functions of deacons, priests, and bishops is to administer the sacred rites of the Church to God’s people:• Bishops are said to have the “fullness of the priesthood,” because they alone have the authority to offer all seven sacraments — Baptism, Penance, Holy Eucharist, Confirmation, Matrimony, Anointing of the Sick, and Holy Orders.• Priests have the power and authority to celebrate five — Baptism, Penance, Holy Eucharist (Mass), Matrimony, and Anointing of the Sick.• Deacons can celebrate Baptism and Matrimony, provided that it’s a wedding without a Nuptial Mass. The Catholic Sacrament of Holy Orders - dummies*** Becoming a Priest ***To become a Catholic priest, you must be a devout Roman Catholic male willing to lead an unmarried, celibate lifestyle. Integrity, virtuous character and close affiliation with a Catholic congregation will also be expected. Admission requirements for the seminary vary by diocese and religious order. In most cases, accepted applicants are between the ages of 17 and 55 years old. A criminal background check, medical examination and psychological screening are typically required. If accepted, you'll be required to undergo rigorous theological study and a process of discernment to confirm your calling to the priesthood leading to ordination.Your application to the seminary requires sponsorship by local church leaders in your parish who are acquainted with you. Sponsorship is only given to those who faithfully attend mass, receive sacraments, attend church events, participate in prayer services and belong to church committees. The purpose is to give aspiring priests a realistic look at what it would be like to choose a religious vocation. Another requirement of sponsorship is possessing upstanding character and emotional stability. Incidents in your past, such as treatment for alcoholism, should be discussed with a priest who can explain how that might affect eligibility for the seminary.A high school diploma or GED is the minimum educational requirement for the seminary, but you can start the application process during your senior year. The application entails filling out forms, writing an autobiography, providing references, submitting academic transcripts and attaching your photo along with certificates of baptism and confirmation. You must then undergo a series of admission interviews and complete a psychological assessment to measure your fitness for the priesthood. Widowers are required to wait at least a year or two after losing their spouse to be admitted. Some seminaries will accept divorced men if their marriage was annulled.Although there are exceptions, most men admitted to the seminary hold a bachelor’s degree with a major, or extensive coursework, in religious studies and philosophy. Without a college degree, you can expect to spend four years in college seminary followed by four years of major seminary. If you already have your college degree, you will spend six years in seminary. Priestly formation involves intensive scholarly coursework, prayer, devotion, meditation, self-examination and experiential training in pastoral ministry. Seminarians may also study Latin, Greek and other languages. The academic program of study leads to a master of divinity degree. To be ordained, priests are required to take vows or make promises to uphold tenants of the faith and live piously. Catholic priests who belong to a communal order like the Jesuits are called religious priests. Their ministry isn't confined to a specific locale. Religious priests are required to take vows of chastity, poverty and obedience. Requirements of diocesan priests are less stringent. Diocesan priests live independently in a city within their diocese. Diocesan priests earn a salary for ministering to their congregation, and they pay bills and taxes like everyone else. Diocesan priests make promises of celibacy, obedience to the bishop and simplicity of lifestyle.By Dr. Mary Dowd, July 1, 2018: Catholic Priest Requirements
