Emma Watson was my middle daughter’s first experience meeting a celebrity. I worked at Brown in the Energy & Environment Office at the time and was working with a student group to transform one of the dorm trash rooms into a recycling center. Since it was a student project, they worked on it at their convenience, which was typically late nights and weekends. One weekend they needed more paint and supplies so I asked my daughter if she wanted to come with me to make the delivery “in case Emma’s around.” She’s a huge, huge fan of Emma in general, not just for the Harry Potter series, so of course she said yes. The entire time we were on campus and in the dorm in question, her head and eyes were swiveling in all directions at once to avoid missing a possible sighting. Turns out, Emma was studying with a friend in a room adjacent to the laundry room, which was down the hall from the recycling center. My daughter about hyperventilated when she caught sight of her and asked me if she could ask for her autograph. I suggested she not do that because Emma wanted to blend in and get the “normal” college girl experience and we should respect her wishes. On the way home my daughter said she learned something about celebrities that day. She learned that they have to do their own laundry and study for their own tests just like everyone else. She never really thought of them as regular people doing regular things before. It was an inadvertent but important lesson for her.

I don’t follow her - I found out that from CNN.But here’s a few reasons why Great Mills isn’t as big a story as Parkland.17 killed and 17 wounded is something out of the ordinary. 1 killed and 2 wounded? Well, on an average day seven children and teenagers under 19 are killed with firearms in the US. So one dead kid and a couple of injuries is notable because it happened in a school, but not especially notable against the routine background of low individual body count incidents in the US.(via Last 72 Hours | Gun Violence Archive. And that’s not even all the incidents for the day.)Nobody is talking about Blaine Gaskill because Gaskill did his job. We expect cops to do their jobs, which is why the officer in Parkland was so roundly lambasted for his cowardice. And given the daily death count, we need lots of good guys with guns to stop lots of bad guys with guns, so it follows that the stopping would be routine, not special, yes?Nobody is talking about Blaine Gaskill because Blaine Gaskill just shot and killed a disturbed seventeen year old. Probably a kid Gaskill passed dozens of times in the halls. Do you really think the Gaskill family, or Gaskill himself, wants to dwell on that?The Great Mills shooting also doesn’t get a lot of coverage because it doesn’t support anybody’s narrative, regardless of what Dana Loesch thinks.It fails to support the lefty narrative because it does suggest having armed guards in schools can reduce the body count, if not stop the killings entirely. (and honest lefties should acknowledge that an imperfect fix is better than no fix.)It fails to support the righty narrative because even though Gaskill appears to have responded rapidly and flawlessly, that still wasn’t enough to prevent the shooter from wounding two people, one critically. This is not, really, a PR success except by comparison to Parkland or Columbine. Compared to “let’s maybe have fewer shootings in the first place” it doesn’t have too much to recommend it.It fails to support the Trumpish narrative because Gaskill was not a case of “let’s give teachers a gun” - he was a trained law enforcement officer and a member of the SWAT team. Such people are much more likely to succeed against an armed attacker than a civilian, but paying them to sit in every school in America all day isn’t a cheap answer.It fails to support the NRA narrative because while the “good guy with a gun” stopped the “bad guy with a gun” two kids are still injured and one is still dead. The Wayne LaPierre catchphrase is very pretty, but its execution in real life is just a different sort of American carnage.Original question:Why is no one talking about the school resource officer who just stopped a mass shooting by killing the shooter before he killed anyone else?

if I ask you to walk with me somewhere just walk with me. if i want food from a vending machine down the hall at school just come with me. I'm scared to walk alone and i dont want to get sexually assaulted even if I'm just at school.
