PDF Editor FAQ

Do physicians consider personalized health-related genetic information from sites such as Livewello, Genetic Genie, and Promethease accurate?

Of course they use that information! Well…some of it…. Okay…they only use the tiny little chunk of it that they were taught was relevant to each specific disease in medical school- and that's okay. Realistically, that information is of virtually no use to you, your daughter, or your doctor. The genetic mutations associated with specific diseases are already known and this personalized genetic information only serves to confirm a diagnosis and determine your ancestry.A more relevant question would be do doctors collate pubmed articles, comb through primary research, visit wet labs of labs of molecular biologists and schedule meetings with pharmaceutical chemist's (the true specialists) to determine the absolute best treatment according to science?NO.The cure isn't in the genetic code, it's in the complete understanding of the effects of a genetic code defect. The NLM is aware if this and spends $1.1 billion on scientific medical research annually. Unfortunately, this research is very very very rarely translated directly from benchtop to bedside. The Elon Musk of medicine - Michael vasser- started a medical consulting company called metamed that delivered high end personalized medical treatments based off of an exhaustive review of current primary literature, extensive solicitation & consultation of global experts, and a trunkload of cash. This was an awesome idea and had a tremendous success and approve rate, but the market just wasn't there. Metamed lasted 3 years and dissolved in 2015.On the bright side, some dieticians [1] will use your data to deliver personalized diets.Footnotes[1] Business Template

What qualities do you need to get hired by McKinsey/BCG & Bain?

Management consultants have very different backgrounds, personalities and goals when entering consulting firms. But there are some common traits that could help you decide if management consulting is right for you.OverachieversManagement consultants tend to be overachievers. If you want to enter right after graduating, you should have excellent academics, no matter what subject matter. Just know that most consultants will come from business programs or engineering programs, and then a few from will come from medical school, law school, et even fewer from other majors like history, literature etc.On top of academics, and still in line with the overachiever personality, consultants will have spent a lot of time one extracurriculars, be it sports, clubs, volunteering, and most time in leadership positions. If you have already some work experience, your grades become less important but your professional track record should still demonstrate excellence through high impact projects, leadership and extracurriculars such the ones mentioned above.Hard workersManagement consultants work long hours, in stressful environments with tight deadlines, sometimes with uncooperative or even hostile clients. If you want to be a management consultant, you should enjoy working hard, and welcome being pushed and challenged on work load, quality and speed.Fast impact seekersMany people seek to have an impact in the world and consultants are no different. The difference with other profession is that they don’t have a lot patience. They want to work hard and fast, and make a measurable impact quickly, then move on. Many PhD graduates join consulting for this reason, i.e. they didn’t like the speed at which they were making an impact. Same for those who transfer from large corporation when they realize their impact will be limited by hierarchical and cultural hurdles.Team playersYou will always be part of a team as a management consultant. Often a team of 2-3 people full time on the ground, plus 1-2 partners popping in and out during the week. Because work is intense and stressful, you will rely on your team to overcome hurdles and blow off some steam during the week. You should therefore enjoy team work, have a natural propensity to help others, coach and be coached. Consulting is not for loners, and one of the main questions that consultants will eventually try to answer is this one: “would I want to have this person on my team?”.Eager to learn (and a little unsecured)Let’s admit it: consulting will pay good money each month, but not if you compute it per hour. You might even get less per hour than minimum wage at entry level. You will also get criticized (we call it coaching), you will sleep too little, eat too fast, have vitamin D deficiency, bad posture and develop a new language that your partner cannot understand at first (KPI, ROI, to be on the beach, SPG etc.). So why put up with all this when you could land a nice 9-5 job that pays almost the same? Well, consultants are eager to learn. Management consulting firms are known to develop their consultants at a fast pace, introduce new skills every 2-3 years, with many training programs, regular reviews and caring mentors. If you are interested in a career in management consulting, sign-up here to receive a free MBB resume template

What is the irony behind the plastic surgery culture in South Korea?

One thing that has become ironic is the recent reversal of medical beauty trends in Korea. It's now moving towards beauty that is less drastic and more natural or the opposite of what's been in style for the past 10 years. This return to naturalism is the result of discussion and reflection among Korean women who are pushing back against social norms and easing beauty pressure placed on them by Korean society via the entertainment and beauty industry. Also, many young Korean women who have witnessed previous generations undergo invasive plastic surgery (mothers, aunts, elder sisters, etc.) are not keen on how those results have stood the test of time. This has led to what Koreans call “petite beauty,” which focuses on less invasive touch-ups or maintenance treatments (botox, fillers, laser skin, and ultrasound lifting and tightening treatments). These treatments are less extreme than say facial bone contouring, jaw surgery, and going under the knife for procedures.Ironically, for many Korean women who want to keep up with this latest natural beauty trend, it's too late. They already took the plunge to have their appearance drastically changed, and have spent enormous amounts of money to surgically alter their faces into a non-typical look, which is now becoming out of fashion. In other words, it would be much harder if not impossible for them to reverse this appearance into more natural-looking beauty.2008 ~ 2018 Korean Medical Beauty trend was as follows:Eyes: large, wide and dollyForehead: Pronounced and curvedNose: High bridge, thin and pointyJawline: Slender, non-angularChin: Sharp V-shape (front), aligned (un-retruded)Slim waist through liposuction, large silicone breast implantsThe above combination became a highly sought after template, and surgeons needed a way to deliver this templatized look efficiently to supply the increased demand, so they developed factory-like protocols to perform as many of these surgeries as possible. Many Koreans believe beauty is a good investment and way to improve their socioeconomic outcomes and opportunities. They are not wrong in believing this because there are sound economic studies and reports to back up this rationale. Meaning it does pay to be beautiful.Even-though cosmetic plastic surgery is considered a luxury purchase. This did not stop Korean people with incomes and lifestyles less suited for this type of purchase to seek out these procedures, and subsequently led to the following:The Rise of Gangnam Unnies (Sisters) and Plastic Surgery MonstersSince there are more financially less-off Koreans than well-off Koreans (rich people), there are also more mediocre Korean plastic surgeons then there are practiced, master surgeons. As a result, cash strapped Korean patients and opportunistic mediocre surgeons created a lucrative marketplace, which was further amplified by plastic surgery marketing platform apps that create coupons and discounts for surgery (yes, these exist in Korea), which allowed for these transactions and procedures to happen at a rapid rate. What resulted was a noticeable rise in Korean and Chinese women with a very particular templatized look, which was often performed by mediocre plastic surgeons on a time crunch using these factory-like methods. This look often appears too surgically “done,” obvious and unnatural.Once again, the irony is that in an attempt to break away from a sea of traditional Korean beauty sameness. These women have now found themselves in another sea of sameness called, “강남언니” Gangnam Ohnee/Unnie (Gangnam Sister), a facetious and sarcastic label to describe surgically enhanced women with this particular “done” appearance. And to hint at their attempts to be included or pass in Gangnam social circles (wealthy neighborhood of Seoul) via surgery.Patients who appear to be too overdone or botched, and or addicted to surgery (body dysmorphia) are at the extreme and might be labeled “성괴” Seong-kweh (Plastic Surgery Monster).2017 ~ Present Korean Medical Beauty trend:Emphasis on skin & light booster treatmentsEyes: double eyelid, natural shape, not anime dolly-eyedNose: Natural enhanced height (possibly through injectable filler), surgically balanced shape (looks good, but can plausibly pass as natural)Jawline: Slender, emphasis on balanceChin: Oval-shaped as opposed to a sharp V-shapeBust: Fat grafting first, then consider implants if it's the only option, and opt for natural size and shaped implants.Body's developed through physical fitness lifestyle, but will do liposuction for trouble spots, but as a last resort.Plastic Surgery In KoreaI am the founder of a plastic surgery marketplace and consulting service in Korea. I don't encourage unnecessary plastic surgery, but I have seen the positive changes that can happen in people's lives by lifting a perceived physical complex or flaw, and the renewed self-confidence good surgical results can help to affirm. If anyone is interested in finding master class surgeons in Korea who avoid these template looks.
