Maybe this would be useful to someone looking to apply soon.I’m a double-degree candidate so that means I’m with LSE kinda for two years as a post grad; the first year is with them in London and the second I chose to go to Shanghai’s Fudan Journalism School.I’m with the department of Media and Communications. The best ranking in the UK and europe and ties with many globally leading media/ comms departments. It’s ONLY a Post grad intake so we don’t have undergrads here.I applied having some industry experience as a journalist and social media coordinator. I applied with bachelors of English Literature from a top 4 UK uni. I applied when I was 23 and always thought I’d firmly progress into journalism. So I picked modules which interested me, I didn’t pick anything I thought would ““better my career”. It makes a huge difference to your learning.The pace is very very fast at LSE. So if you don’t pick things you enjoy you can feel its consequences in your grades and feedback. Michaelmas term is more intense than Lent term as you are settling in. There are a lot of students who may be insecure or unsure of themselves and they can be a little hard to talk to as I found they had an arrogant streak. But I made some life long, incredible friends here and the majority of students are Sooooooooooo laid back and easy to grab a beer/ Pizza slice with (thank you Homeslice for saving so many study hours).My advice would be: don’t judge a book by its cover.I think many peolle judged me because I was quite vocal in class and it can be intimidating. Lse is 60% or more international. English isn’t the commanding language for many. But it is mine being London born and bred. People were afraid to speak out in class as it can be so theoretically challenging and the teachers push you. Hard.However, I would say about 8 students in my programme would ask me for help the day or two before every single summative deadline or exam. And I helped all of them, I never thought bad of someone running to me for help last minute. But a lot of the students who did come to me, hours before the deadline, did judge me and didn’t really care for me outside of class. But I think because I was vocal and confident in my contributions to class, they felt they could come to me.At lse, it’s a lot of pressure to attain a distinction or merit even. 70+/60+. It’s because the school is so research facing that your work must be original and theoretically engaging to meet that higher mark. These grades are hard to get when you want to also work, rest, do more sport and social things and even an internship in London.At lse, I do feel there is a ““everyone is in it together” attitude. And some may disagree, but if you want to be a post grad there, make the most. You have one year. Be friendly and keen to help everyone as well as not burning yourself out too.My advice also is seek help if you need it. Many of us, including me used the centre for well being. It’s a great establishment. Counselling and verbal therapy is so important for you when you feel pressure and without it I do not know how I wouldn’t have made it through the LSE. Keep close rapport with your teachers and personal tutor. They are incredible pastoral caters. I was taught by some of the most amazing, world leading staff. Like, they are icons to a media nerd like me. And yet, in their busy life, they gave me time to cry or break down in their office on a bad day.The staff and centre for wellbeing are incredible supporters. They saved my life at a point too, as I was so low with external things. They are understanding. My programme director said ““The lse has a habit of asking too much of its students. Take a break. You don’t need to give as much”.I learnt a lot here. I got stuck in with the social mobility campaigns to raise awareness for the differences of working class and disabled students. Many students are super rich, and sometimes aware of how other students can not afford a Starbucks 4 Times a day. It really helped me gain confidence telling people in my department about the cause too.just be reachable and teachable. Honestly, if you can be there for another student and remain humble and open enough to having your perceptions changed the lse is for you. Yearly loads of LSE peeps make it into 30 under 30 and that first career shifting job. Lse is a great space for learning how to be a go getter. Some do make it all about them and all about what THEY can milk out of it. But truly? I think the LSE is a place where your personality can shine. If you want it to.I made it through the lse with bipolar and a big aneamia deficiency which ruined my energy. Not the greatest for the work load!! But I used a lot of the support pockets, and made sure to help anyone who needed help. Some students you just won’t gel with, that’s ok. That’s life. But my advice summed up:make Le the most of your 1 yearBe friendly and approachablesmile at everyone on campus. Studying makes people grumpy! They could use your beautiful smile.Squid card isn’t ALLLLLL that! Buy a flask and keep it topped up with green tea.London is the best city in the world. Get out of the LSE bubble now and then.Start your deadline work weeks in advance. Get office hours with teachers in advance. They run out. See your module teachers and personal tutor every 2-3 weeks. I promise it helps. I PROMISE ACROSS MY HEART.Post grad is that short step to career. Seek out lse ALUMNI and ask for pointers. We are all very proud of being an LSE veteran. We are always happy to listen and help our school’s new talent! (I am at least!)Make friends with different departments so you don’t go crazy. And if you don’t, that’s ok. Be crazy together with your crew.Everyone has a story. Learn from class mates. Ask if they need a cookie or a hug. You never know what someone’s day is going to be like. And then there’s a day of LSE lectures to add to the mix. Support and get supported back!Some students are caught up in the rat race. They’re usually full of shit though and easy to spot. Usually can’t answer a question properly and changes the topic to a holiday they had in Dubai etc. These people are draining. But they are people too. Let them do their own thing and smile! Lse has so many amazing people. But some are a bit stuck up.Be compassionate. Being a disabled student there, I met people like me who agreed that judgement is the worst!! We still get our grades and deadlines in just like everyone else. So I would say, learn to have empathy. The school is tough. They only accept the best. So act with kindness always.But lse lse merch for your parents. They love it. It’s so cute.Club mate is the best drink from berlin and I have only ever found it at LSE’s shop. Stock up.
