What is volunteering for hospice like?
I agree with everything that Jennifer wrote. I’d like to add my perspective as a licensed massage therapist and musician. I work in the U.S.I volunteer as a massage therapist for hospice patients with the local non-profit hospice group. Most of my patients are in an assisted care facility that is part of a continuing care campus. If the patient is verbal, I obtain consent before I begin. If the patient is non-verbal, I rely on the family order for massage. I do very gentle massage, called Comfort Touch (Comfort Touch), and incorporate some myofascial release in some limited situations if the patient is able to tolerate it. I also do a lavender oil hand massage. If the patient doesn’t want a massage, or the massage seems to bother the patient, then I hold their hand or just sit with them. I’ll sing for them if they want me to. In most cases, the touch seems to relax the patients and they are resting more comfortably when I am finished. As a massage therapist, I complete a massage therapy log sheet for each session. I also write notes in the patient’s medical file. In between patients, I wash my hands and use hand sanitizer.I volunteer as a singer to see individual patients on my own, under the direction of the Music Therapist. I sing a capella for the patients, a mixture of hospice songs, hymns, classical music, and popular songs. I’m currently taking ukulele lessons so I can play solo music and accompany some of the songs. I used to sing in the hospice group’s Threshold Choir, but have discontinued due to scheduling issues. For each session, I complete a basic log sheet.I submit the log sheets to the hospice group so they can track the number of hours and type of volunteer work.I find both roles to be extremely fulfilling, in that I’m able to use my skills to bring comfort (from massage) and joy (from music) to people preparing for their final journey. I am currently taking a break while I deal with depression, having found that the depression makes it harder for me to deal with patients in difficult situations (particularly if they are non-verbal and upset). The hospice group has quarterly sharing sessions for the Comfort Touch and Reiki practitioners, and massage therapists. At those sessions, we discuss issues that came up during sessions for an hour (which counts as continuing education), and then exchange body or energy work for the second hour. The support from this group is very helpful.I’m looking forward to continuing my massage and music volunteering later this year.
How do I keep blood from rotting when I put it in a jar?
There are three additives I can think of that are used medically to prevent blood clotting.I’ll list them here. I do not know if any of these would be available to you or would work for what ever the heck you want fresh (old) blood for.Anticoagulant SPS (Sodium Polyanetholsulfonate) & ACD (acid citrate dextrose). What it does: Prevents the blood from clotting and stabilizes bacterial growth.Sodium Citrate. What it does: Binds and remove calcium to prevent blood from clottingHeparin (Sodium/Lithium/Ammonium) also called Sodium Heparin also Sodium EDTA. What it does: Inhibits thrombin formation to prevent clottingOf the three probably SPS and ACD would work best for general keeping blood from “rotting” as it stabilizes bacterial growth. All of these are used in medical test tubes to prevent deterioration of blood when being transported from medical facility and lab. Now, nope I am NOT an expert on blood preservation. My very first “real” job my senior year of school and out of high school was at United Medical Labs in Portland Oregon. A hell of a job, today you couldn’t pay me to work at such a place but back in the early 70’s it was pretty cool. I totally got over any feelings of repugnance about spilled blood. It was just another mess to be cleaned up. I opened shipped blood samples and entered them laboriously, in the log sheets. This is pre-computer stations. We used real paper logs and entered dates, addresses, account numbers and so on by hand. Someone else entered them into the giant computers that were housed on one floor. Yeah, the whole warehouse sized floor and probably only 1 or 2 computers. On punch cards. For a 17 yr old farm girl back then it was quite a step up from picking beans and strawberries. It cemented my love of biology and my fascination with all thing's science.
